fowkswe··on Ask HN: Could Wastewater Injection in TX and OK Trigger the Yellowstone Caldera?
Thanks.

Is there some distance from the caldera where crust disturbance would definitely not be a factor? 1 mile? 100 miles? Greater?

fowkswe··on Ask HN: Could Wastewater Injection in TX and OK Trigger the Yellowstone Caldera?
Good point. What about the drilling activity in the Dakota's and / or Alberta - Saskatchewan?
fowkswe··on A Surprise from the Supervolcano Under Yellowstone
Has anyone heard of a study of how fracking and horizontal oil drilling in the states surrounding Colorado are affecting the caldera? I would imagine all of the seismic activity they cause would have an impact.
fowkswe··on A High-End Mover Dishes on Truckstop Hierarchy, Rich People, and Moby Dick
The problem in my mind, at least in the US, is that we give licenses to 16 year-olds without proper training and turn them loose on the roads.

This combined with the American machismo culture of driving like an entitled asshole make for situations where people think they are the skilled drivers, but in fact are out of control.

Additionally we have an armada of truck drivers whose incomes are increasingly pinched by competition and ever dwindling wages that are pushing the limits of safety in order to make a living.

This is how you end up with spun out SUV's and jackknifed semi's

Statements like this make me cringe:

> I’ve cost them time and money going down the hill. It’s a macho thing. Drive the hills as fast as you can and be damn sure to humiliate any sonofabitch who’s got brains enough to respect the mountains.

It's unfortunate that trucking is one of the last middle class industries left in the US. We need jobs like this, but at the same time I can't wait for automation to take the human factor out of this equation.

fowkswe··on Ask HN: Who's running a profitable newsletter?
The listings project is not mine, but I've always admired Stefanie and her list:

https://www.listingsproject.com/

It lists artist studios, coworking and apartment sublets, mostly in NYC and probably does about $500k in revenue year.

Weekly newsletters have been averaging about 300-325 listings @ $30 per week. There are also sponsored emails that I'm sure are in the thousands of dollars per email.

fowkswe··on Speed Up a WordPress Website in 8 Steps
I don't have specifics like that, but I've noticed drastic improvements in page load time when I moved a site from Apache to NGINX. This post was the motivation:

fowkswe··on Speed Up a WordPress Website in 8 Steps
This fails to mention the most dramatic fix, which is to host it on NGINX rather than Apache.

Have a look at a map. Geographic boundaries surrounding an 8 million person population is why NYC real estate is so expensive.
fowkswe··on Find a new city
For sure, they are very small places.

But they are old, dense cities and are very walkable / bikeable. You can even ride between the 2 on a nice path that runs next to the Hudson (they are about 6 miles apart).

fowkswe··on Find a new city
Yes, RPI is in Troy. It would be one of the points on my list of assets. They have this amazing music venue called EMPAC...
fowkswe··on Find a new city
For people looking for that 70s NYC like experience, with proximity to NYC, I HIGHLY suggest checking out the Albany / Troy area.

Both are gritty little cities with a bunch of interesting people living there doing interesting shit, all for next to nothing. You can rent a townhouse for under a thousand / month. Shit, you can BUY a gorgeous 19th century townhouse for under a 100k - the same thing that would be 3 million in the Brooklyn where Patti Smith and Robert Maplethorpe lived.

I'm not going to go on about how much there is to offer there, because I could do that for paragraphs. You should just go check it out for yourself.

Lot's of Flash developers got caught with their pants down. If you were good, you moved into iOS (or jumped on the ever morphing javascript train), but lots of them were not T shaped and struggled to transition their skillset.

I can't compare, but I can comment on Sendy. I use it to send about to a list of about 5k.

It has never sent to completion on its own, it always requires me to monitor the queue so I can hit the 'retry' button once it times out which usually happens after about 100-150 emails have been sent. I've actually scripted this action - so now when I send, I hit the send button as well as fire off a shell script that spoofs the 'refresh' request. It takes about 10 minutes to complete the campaign.

I'll echo the other complaints about the quality of the code - it seems to suffer from a copy / paste syndrome as the database connection logic is repeated in every file, but it could also be that the author has obfuscated it as well. It does do a phone home and some other stuff via some base 64 encoded code. I've unwound it in an attempt to fix another issue I thought it was causing (it wasn't). Here it is if you are curious:

https://gist.github.com/fowkswe/20a7c4c03835de183ff68fe5ab1a...

I'll give Sendy credit for getting me this far, though I would like to replace it someday with something I feel I have more control over. Not sure the OP or the other suggestions listed here offer exactly what I'm looking for.

I'd love it if you put a link! I'll do the same :).

fowkswe··on Show HN: KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Spotify Playlist Generator
Thanks!

I'm pulling the day's songs via the API:

http://tracklist-api.kcrw.com/Simulcast/date/2016/03/04?page...

etc, and creating a playlist out of those. I'm parsing the artist/ song names pretty crudely, so I think it drops some.

I thought they were folding all shows during the day into that list, but maybe I'm wrong?

fowkswe··on Show HN: KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic Spotify Playlist Generator
Nice! I made this:

http://billyfowks.com/spotify/

which pretty much contains the full day's playlist

fowkswe··on Ask HN: Why have most tech and startup-related bloggers moved to Medium?
I've made some Rails ActiveRecord models that to talk to the Wordpress database.

Using them and the page caching gem / feature, you can get the static page effect you are looking for.

Additionally, you can have all the Rails goodies (Haml, Sass, Coffeescript, layouts/partials, etc) for use in your Wordpress development needs along with the Wordpress authoring tools.

I have it working in my project, and took a half assed attempt to turn it into a gem. This is waaay premature, and missing lots of the stuff I have flushed out in my project (post_content formatting, short code completion, categories, tags, etc):

https://github.com/fowkswe/pressar

If anyone is interested, I'd be willing to fold the other functionality in and get the 'gem install' working.

fowkswe··on How to know if where you live is “up and coming”: fried chicken vs. coffee shops
If the assumption is that fried chicken places are a relic of a poorer past, then this metric does not work for New York City. Fried chicken is the food of the moment:

fowkswe··on The Future of New York City Transportation: Goodbye Cars, Hello Rails
I'm suggesting closing the avenues during the daytime, especially rush hours. Deliveries and garbage pickup can happen early morning or in the evening (which is already the case for garbage pickup).
fowkswe··on The Future of New York City Transportation: Goodbye Cars, Hello Rails
See my comment above, but I think the most obvious solution would be to contain deliveries to non rush hour times - ala garbage pickup.
fowkswe··on The Future of New York City Transportation: Goodbye Cars, Hello Rails
This argument has the same line of reasoning that the businesses originally tried to use when the city did put in buffered bike lines - that removing unfettered automobile / truck access was the death knell to commerce

(Like these: http://gothamist.com/2011/07/14/post_blames_bike_lanes_for_b... http://www.villagevoice.com/news/new-east-village-bike-lanes...).

In the case of the bike lanes, this is the furthest from the truth (have a Google for lots of arguments about the merit of increased bike traffic).

I'm not sure what the solution is, but there certainly is one that would support a few car/truck free avenues.
