fotta··on iMessage Key Verification
this was announced a year ago https://www.macrumors.com/2022/12/07/new-imessage-apple-id-s...
fotta··on Voyager 1 stops communicating with Earth
Uhhh lots of stuff is launched with RTGs still. Curiosity is powered by an RTG.
fotta··on Security Issue: Cloud Site Manager presented me your consoles, not mine
there was a comment in one of the reddit threads that someone was able to create a vlan on someone else's network
fotta··on Google Fiber - 20 Gig + Wi-Fi 7 will be available to select customers
I wish they’d bring faster than 1Gbps speeds to the Webpass network but I doubt that’ll happen soon due to the architecture (Ethernet to units instead of fiber).
fotta··on Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput (L4S) Internet Service: RFC 9330
Oh wow, I did not know this is what’s behind their low latency trials I’ve seen on dslreports.
fotta··on Why Did These LEDs Light Up? ESP32-S3 – Which Pins Are Safe to Use? [video]
Nothing in particular that requires an S3. I’m just running a Bluetooth proxy for home assistant, which can run on a basic esp32.
fotta··on Why Did These LEDs Light Up? ESP32-S3 – Which Pins Are Safe to Use? [video]
I’m using an s3 with esphome which uses platformio which uses esp-idf and it usb flashes fine too.
fotta··on My toddler loves planes, so I built her a radar
Not quite the same as your suggestion but SFO has a Sky Terrace pre-security that you can go and watch planes from.
fotta··on The secret language of ships
Anyone that’s interested in the machinations of the tugboat industry might be interested in TimBAtSea on YouTube. He’s a tug captain in the New York Harbor and Puerto Rico moving large oil barges and his videos are fascinating to me.
fotta··on Details emerge of surprise board coup that ousted CEO Sam Altman at OpenAI
D’Angelo had to have voted in favor because otherwise they don’t get a four vote majority.

fotta··on McDonalds is giving free French fries in return for waiving the right to sue
How does this work if, say, I agreed to these terms, but then I walked into a McDonald’s and bought a scalding hot coffee without using the app? Would I still have grounds to sue if I got burnt since I never interacted with the app in this transaction but I previously agreed in the app?

edit: the terms say (emphasis my own)

> any claim or dispute […] you may have with McDonald’s or any other Members of the McDonald’s System arising from or related to the online services or these terms will be resolved exclusively by final and binding arbitration

So I suppose that this really only applies to lawsuits related to the use of the app and that any foodservice claims are still valid? IANAL.

By this reading, I think this statement in the article is incorrect.

> Essentially, the new terms state that, if a customer tries to sue over hot coffee, for example, they can't take their case to trial.

fotta··on The Pixel 8 Pro's Tensor G3 off-loads all generative AI tasks to the cloud
Has anyone looked at network traffic while using the Magic Editor to see if it’s actually offloading the processing? Or is this just an inferred conclusion based on needing an internet connection? Is it possible that it requires an internet connection to fetch new models or something but the processing is still on device?
fotta··on Eclipse October 2023
Right and the net load chart shows that, but the spike is only for a short time then goes back down even as net load is elevated. This is what I don’t understand. In comparison the California price remains elevated throughout the spike in net load.
fotta··on Eclipse October 2023
Unrelated but what’s the spike in Texas’ real time price around 6pm about? California also spikes around this time but is more spread out.
fotta··on NASA's Psyche Spacecraft, Optical Comms Demo En Route to Asteroid
The sonic boom crack is really cool. I didn’t realize it goes trans-sonic at such low altitude but it makes sense given how much thrust the F9 has and the low weight of the empty booster.
fotta··on Skyvew – View and share Bluesky threads without needing a Bluesky account
There’s also psky.app, but it’s generally just annoying having to edit the link before sharing, especially on mobile. I wish Bluesky would just stop login-walling links, it’s all public anyway.

Edit: psky is retired now, but point still stands

fotta··on Apple TV, now with more Tailscale
> With a Tailscale exit node, you’re in control and you get the internet connection you’re used to. This new feature could come in handy if you’re traveling with your Apple TV and want to access the same geo-restricted channels you can see from home.

They do call this out towards the end.
