foruhar··on Intuit pouring money into lobbying amid push for free government-run tax filing
Not only is it not getting simpler the tax code seems to keep growing as more exceptions and exemptions get added. I guess it's like so many legacy code bases that just keep growing with lots of patches for special cases.

According to the Public Law 117-154(06/23/2022), the U.S. Tax Code is 6,871 pages. When you include the federal tax regulations and the official tax guidance, the number of pages raises to approximately 75,000. This zip file (pdf) is 181MB [0].

There must be a myriad ways. This was on the front page today https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34835096
foruhar··on A Gentle Introduction to CRDTs
Very cool. CRDTs seem to be in the air. I was searching for something unrelated and bumped into https://mycelial.com/ which is also doing CRDTs with sqlite. Very helpful intro to CRDTs video on their youtube channel.
foruhar··on ChatGPT is a blurry JPEG of the web
There’s a version of this where the output is mediated by humans. Currently chatgpt has a thumbs up/down UI next to each response. This feedback could serve as a signal for which generated output may be useful for future ingestion. Perhaps OpenAI is already doing this with our thumb signals.
foruhar··on Why the conventional wisdom on how to grow muscles is wrong
I once had physical therapist who got quite far in the amateur natural body building world by only lifting 1lb weights. He was getting a PhD in Anatomy(!) and wanted to demonstrate that you don't need to lift heavy to get hypertrophy. Although he did not recommend this approach as the most time-efficient, he emphasized that gains can be made at the extreme end of the low weight-high volume spectrum.
foruhar··on Elite for Emacs (2015)
I played way too much Elite on the BBC micro (vs studying). As a kid learinging to program I thought Braben and Bell were gods. It blew my mind that my 6502 computer could manifest the experience that was Elite.

Braben went on to write Zarch/Virus that blew my teenage mind on the Acorn Archimedes A3000 which was the first ARM CPU that most people could actually get their hands on. Decades later Braben was one of the co-founders of the Raspberry Pi foundation with cheap as chips (when in stock) computers built around an ARM CPU.

foruhar··on ChatGPT and the Enshittening of Knowledge
There is a world in which AI will be the best source of knowledge (most powerful knowledge generator). There will be many LLMs & AIs, open and branded, and we'll pick our oracle. ChatGPT is an infant of an AI and it will mutate, and evolve beyond transformers. Some (many?) branches will be amazing at serving up "enshittened knowledge" but there will be branches that take different approaches and philosophies. There will likely be AI curators of knowledge bases that weed out AI-generated crap, and disinformation. There will be non-hallucinatory AIs, certainty scores, explanation-based systems, first principles machines, and super focused additive AIs that will layer onto a base LLM (or whatever is next). We'll choose (and probably pay for) our blends of knowledge, humour, bias, filtering, and conviviality. The "internet" of tomorrow may run on TCP/IP but it very unlikely to work like this web that we are using now.
foruhar··on OpenAI Status: Multiple engines are down
Apparently ChatGPT went from zero to a million users in five days[1], at a cost of "single-digits cents per chat."

For perspective the likes of Instagram and Twitter have take from a few months to a few dozen months to get to a million users all while doing less work to service a request for a "page."

Hats of to OpenAI for not falling over more often under a hug of death that doesn't seem to be letting up.

foruhar··on Ask HN: What sub $200 product improved your 2022
I bought a 30x magnifying glass with LED lighting for $16 on Amazon. I didn't know I needed it but I now use it daily.

I find the magnifier super handy to grab for reading tiny print on things like USB chargers. My reading glasses don't help in such cases even if I happen to be wearing them. I have 40x one too put it's more like jeweler's loupe with a very short focal length so less useful on a day to day basis.

foruhar··on ‘Breakthrough’ obesity drugs that have stunned researchers
$1000/month seems like a decent amount of money for a lot of people. I'm guessing a large number of folks would love to lose weight miraculously. I wonder how long before we get a bootleg analog that can be bought in the non-medical drug market in the same way as testosterone can be bought. Now that the mechanism is known (GLP-1 inhibition) are these the kind of drug, e.g. LSD, valium, or morphine, that is easy to create a facsimile or analog of?
foruhar··on The expanding dark forest and generative AI
Taking data without consent is a real issue. There is still lots of data out there that is free of copyright. I'd be curious to see a model that is trained solely on public domain data (perhaps with an option to include creative commons-compliant data). I think there is plenty of knowledge that is in the free and clear to make a very useful LL and/or stable diffusion model. We may miss out on Wegovy and air fryer reviews, articles on the how to beat the stock market with Numpy, and manga art styles yet there is plenty of a few decades ago that would make for a useful "AI." Even Steamboat Willie may soon be in play.
foruhar··on Jean-Michel Jarre’s ‘Oxygene 4’ Recreated with 19KB of JavaScript
Oxygene was part of the sound track for the Peter Weir (Dead Poet's Society, The Truman Show) film Gallipoli (1981); an interesting choice for a movie set in 1915.
foruhar··on Jean-Michel Jarre’s ‘Oxygene 4’ Recreated with 19KB of JavaScript
It stutters for me when I have the tab in focus. What I switch to another tab the stuttering goes away. I guess it's the animations that are bogging down my Intel MBA.
foruhar··on Waymo expands its rider-only territories
Have Waymo announced which cities they will work on in 2023/2024? One of the comments in here mentions their vehicles in Los Angeles. Any guesses on when they may start service in New York City?
foruhar··on Argentina Wins the World Cup

foruhar··on TV disappears, but HBO Max removing shows feels different
Usenet too, old as the hills, continues to archive via NZB/NNTP.
foruhar··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
Whatever you resist persists. Thinking about not wanting to be overweight makes me feel bad and defeated. Thinking about wanting to get fit gives me a sense of hope, and agency. Put another way thinking about what I don't want begs the question of what do I want and then I can put energy into that. Of course this does not apply to everything e.g. certain chronic diseases.
