fortylove··on Google is dismantling its health division
This comment is peak HN, and I love it.
fortylove··on Swiping left on magnetic stripes
Does this mean that we can finally have smaller credit cards, if they only need to be big enough to hold the chip? (Assuming payment slots can somehow handle multiple card sizes, eventually...)
fortylove··on Father builds exoskeleton to help wheelchair-bound son walk
I don't have anything to add, but your product looks fantastic and I can only imagine the joy it brings to patients and families. Nice work!
fortylove··on Show HN: I made a webapp to help people create flag designs for fun
I read this as Firefox causes the typo, and enjoyed a good laugh.
fortylove··on Eric Carle has died
Even then, his heavy duty dump truck tires were stuck down deep in muck and mire.
fortylove··on Eric Carle has died
But what's the meaning behind "goodnight noises everywhere"?
fortylove··on Tech sector job interviews assess anxiety, not software skills: study
I've always thought the SAT is basically gauging the same skill: can you study for a test and do well? The grades you get in college are mostly determined by how well you can study for tests. In the process, hopefully you learn the subject, but that always felt like a side goal.

I think tech interviewing is somewhat similar: are you focused and dedicated enough to learn something arbitrary and produce code for it?

fortylove··on Show HN: SheetUI – Turn Google Sheets into Web Pages
Very cool! I can see this being especially useful for communicating status of some process status, like for example, # of tests run today, outcome, etc.
fortylove··on Bankrupt Hertz targets Robinhood traders in plot to dump $1B in stock
>These aren't hedge-funds or big banks who are "smarter" than me.

I'm not sure your assumption here is correct.

fortylove··on Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever
Presumably, your employer could provide a stipend to you for WFH space. Perhaps that would cost them less than a seat for you in a building in a city.
fortylove··on Show HN: Excel-like table editing for Markdown
I've seen reference to org mode quite a few times now. I will have to check it out.
fortylove··on Show HN: Excel-like table editing for Markdown
Very nice! It would be really cool if you can do some simple math too, like =sum(...), and have it update the markdown for you. I like it!
fortylove··on Google fires activist Rebecca Rivers and 3 others
While I agree with you in general, it must be somewhat difficult to draw the line between what's a "good" defense contract, and what a "bad" one is. Surely we need _some_ defense contracts? Once you need some defense contracts, then I assume you want an ethical company handling them.
fortylove··on The largest acquisitions by Big Tech companies
It's crazy to think that Amazon acquired Whole Foods for less than Facebook acquired WhatsApp. Not on the list, IBMs 34b acquisition of Red Hat.
fortylove··on How Do Individual Contributors Get Stuck? A Primer (2017)
I agree with your statement, but I would change it to the right team. Even great places have teams that aren't high performing, and landing on one of those can hinder your learnings/career.
fortylove··on You-Dont-Need-Lodash-Underscore
Another useful aspect of lodash is familiarity. When you see a lodash function name you're familiar with, you can instantly place that piece of code within your mental model. No need to read 10 different implementations of the same filter.
fortylove··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
>For something as simple as car camping

I have personally witnessed a car camper leave their vehicle and barefoot chase an ambulance in the road, screaming profanities at the ambulance (right across from houses with small children). Through their own profanity-laced words, the person was trying to start a fight with the ambulance. Any reasonable person would assume that this car camper was some combination of a) beyond high on some drug, or b) suffering from severe mental health issues (if so, please revoke their license and get him proper help?). My neighbors and I both witnessed the situation, and called the police. Five police cars show up, get a statement from the ambulance driver, and sit the camper down. After talking to the camper for about 5 minutes, the police left with no action.

This _exact_ same car camper 3 weeks later threw a stolen bike at a moving car, out of the blue. 1 week later, I again saw this car camper kicking cars that were stopped at a traffic light, all the while swearing profanities at them. This person is still on the street, likely ready to harass the next underserving victims.

Here's another experience, which you might just write off as another anecdote. I was with my pregnant wife for a normal pregnancy checkup. A person who again was either high or suffering severe mental problems was being restrained by hospital security for breaking the hospital entrance door. The reason? The person was screaming that "the door was not supposed to be guarded by an evil spirit". Again, this person was clear high or mentally ill, or some combination of the two. However, NO ONE, including THIS PERSON, benefits from being left on the streets.

Oh, another anecdote you might write off. I take the bus to work. One morning, there was a school field trip that shared this bus. There was another person on the bus who one might assume was homeless, but agreed, looks can be deceiving. This person was drinking from a handle of cheap vodka, and then spitting back into the bottle. In between swigs, the person was swearing. What a great environment for children. We need to feel compassion for these troubled people, and provide help, but that DOES NOT mean that we should normalize these harmful behaviors.

Anyways, just some first person anecdotes to balance this thread out. It's easy to preach when you're not the one raising children around these folks.

fortylove··on Netflix: only 35 of IMDB top 250 available to stream (2018)
30 Rock wasn't on Netflix anymore, last I'd checked.
fortylove··on Amazon’s Grocery Push Keeps Stumbling After Whole Foods Purchase
#1 is solvable to a certain extent by the store providing photos of the specific units you can order.
fortylove··on What Happens When Facebook Goes the Way of Myspace?
I'm not so sure that'll still be true once they have a critical mass of users on there. Perhaps a lot of users will have been brought on through their network, instead of through their belief in the platform. Before you know it, perhaps most of their users won't care as much as the original set!
fortylove··on Did Facebook’s faulty data push publishers to make terrible decisions on video?
Probably an unpopular opinion here: I personally find that I understand and remember things a lot better if I learn them from video (as opposed to reading text alone). Anyone else like this?
fortylove··on How to Get Things Done When You Don't Feel Like It
+1, can vouch for: >Leave a currently solved code part partially done or leave a compile issue on the area you were working on, then wake up the next day, finish that part and you can flow right into other work because the domain is in your mind.
fortylove··on Millennials and Mainframes: How to Bridge the Gap
Fidelity Investments has a software engineer training program for fresh college graduates that lasts a few months and is supposed to prepare them to work at Fidelity. The training program is split into different tracks, one of which is a mainframe track [1].

fortylove··on Tesla's Finance Team Is Losing Another Top Executive
I don't know any.
fortylove··on Facebook Q2 2018 Earnings
I see people say things like this a lot on HN ("I would easily pay X for Y, if it meant no advertising"), and I worry that we are a bit of a self selecting population with the means for such things.

Imagine you have family with 4 kids. Are you actually going to spend $600/year on facebook?

Also, I wonder if the people who _wouldn't_ pay for a subscription are just quieter? And finally, would you really want to be on facebook if it lost half of its user base because that half didn't want to pay?

fortylove··on Google Cloud Global Loadbalancer Outage
Thanks for the information. I see now why I hadn't noticed. I don't Snapchat anymore, I switched to Google Music, and I haven't adopted Discord. I guess I'm not in with the cool crowd anymore!
fortylove··on Google Cloud Global Loadbalancer Outage
To be honest, I hadn't even noticed. What popular sites went down?
fortylove··on The Trouble with D3
It gives you a well defined set of primitives to work with. It's also a well established library, so there are a number of good resources on it (and it's seems to be mostly bug free).
fortylove··on Open-sourcing Sonar, a new extensible debugging tool
Seems FB has a pattern of releasing open source projects that have naming conflicts. Another example: yarn
