fortran77··on Building my own Vi text editor in BASIC
There's a little BASIC resurgance now. I've been having fun with this https://github.com/ReuvenSwirsky/erlbasic "Erlang BASIC" which implements a mini-computer style time sharing BASIC system in Erlang. There's a beta of it online now, running a more advanced version than the branch on GitHub I’ve been using.

I'll see if I can port this "Vi" to this flavor of BASIC.

fortran77··on 1966 Ford Mustang Converted into a Tesla with Working 'Full Self-Driving'
I was 100% FSD today. Went to the office, ran some errands, went home. Never touched the steering wheel once. 2026 Model S Plaid.

fortran77··on Security through obscurity is not bad
Wordpress is a great example. He cites

> There is a long-standing security recommendation to change WordPress's default database table prefix to a random one. For example, wp_users becomes wp_8df7b8_users. This is often dismissed as "worthless" because it is security through obscurity.

I found that just changing the default URL for the wordpress login from the usual wp-admin to anything reduces by several orders of magnitude the number of scripts that try your site for the most common vulnerabilities---something that happens constantly for any site on the web, once a minute or so.

fortran77··on Ask.com has closed
That stupid "Ask" toolbar that nobody in the history of computing every wanted on their computer, but millions of hapless people installed accidentally. They paid Adobe $100MM/year for a while to bundle it with Acrobat Reader. If you forgot to uncheck a little box, it would poison your browser with the Ask Toolbar.

What a disgusting company; pushing Malware onto naive users and making their web experience bad. I won't miss them.

fortran77··on Russia Poisons Wikipedia
Wikipedia is full of various large disinformation campaigns. Not just Russia, but Iran, Qatar, North Korea, etc. Unless I'm looking at the history of DB-9 connectors or early Simpsons episode summaries, etc, it's not a reliable source.
fortran77··on Credit cards are vulnerable to brute force kind attacks
We had a 5.15 cent charge for "TikTok" on a business card we never used. We have very good password hygene, and we have Ubikey authentication for all our business accounts. The bank initially told us to file a police report (!) for identity theft.

I knew it wasn't identity theft. We got a notice a week later that the charge had been reversed; we never bothered with a police report, we just cancelled the card. It had been flagged as suspicious by the bank when it was initially processed, but I'm not sure what was wrong. Perhaps one factor, like expiration date or zip code wasn't right.

I have a feeling it was stolen with some scheme like this where people just guess numbers by some algorithm.

fortran77··on Largest Digital Human Rights Conference Suddenly Canceled
It's because people like you don't consider the indigenous people of Judea and Sumarea to be people, and you think it's OK to rape and murder them--as do the folks at "RightsCon"

fortran77··on GitHub Copilot is moving to usage-based billing
I'm not sure I understand this. All I know is now, I pay $39/month (actually less because I paid a year up front), use the agent, mostly on auto--and only choosing a model if it got stuck or in a loop--every day, and haven't hit any limits yet. It seemed to good to be true, after hearing others talk of $300/month bills. I guess it was.

fortran77··on An AI agent deleted our production database. The agent's confession is below
I use AI to help me code and write tests. Why on earth would I allow it to have any access to my production database? It's just not possible. I don't want AI--or me!--to make a mistake in production. That's why we stage things, test them, and then roll. And our production server has backups--that we test regularly.
