fortran77··on Microsoft starts canceling Claude Code licenses
I use copilot cli and I can pick Anthropic models. The Microsoft interface seems fine to me, and equivalent. Not sure what the big deal is.

fortran77··on Tennessee man jailed 37 days for Trump meme wins settlement after lawsuit
I voted for Trump. I fail to see how the meme here is a threat. And I also think that telling Democrats they can vote by text message is an attempt to undermine the election.

There are no double standards. Take my downvote.

fortran77··on Tennessee man jailed 37 days for Trump meme wins settlement after lawsuit
It doesn't remind me of this at all. That person may have been "joking" but it could reasonably be construed as an attempt to subert or manipulate an election.
fortran77··on Tennessee man jailed 37 days for Trump meme wins settlement after lawsuit
I'm still not seeing how that "meme" could in any way be a threat. I've dissected it every possible way. It would never have occurred to me that the point that meme was trying to make was to threated violence. What am I missing?

fortran77··on The American Rebellion Against AI Is Gaining Steam
There's a lot to like about AI, but there's so much slop and everthing is getting so shitty, if I had to choose a side, it would be "against it."

I had to suffer through taling to Sutter Heath's AI three times today before I could get through to a person to tell them about a billing mistake. I finally decided to send a formal demand letter via FedEx (written with the help of AI) rather than deal with all this AI slop they've put between me and customer service.

fortran77··on Security researcher says Microsoft built a Bitlocker backdoor, releases exploit
I encrypt my desktop. What if someone breaks in and steals it? My tax returns are on there, banking and investment info, etc. And what if I'm careless about disposing of an internal drive in an old machine that's in the closet, etc. I usually drill or sledge drives, but what if I forget? Encrypting all drives makes sense.
fortran77··on Security researcher says Microsoft built a Bitlocker backdoor, releases exploit
It's a very serious bug, but Bitlocker is full-disk-encryption. It's just possible to bypass the authentication.
fortran77··on Security researcher says Microsoft built a Bitlocker backdoor, releases exploit
This is a serious bug! I've just enabled TPM+PIN on all my Windows Machines (you need a PIN before the boot sequence starts) and enabled BIOS PINs (though those are easily circumvented) and Secure Boot (again, you can get a signed WinRE and still to this exploit). The TPM+PIN setting has no PoC, but the creator hints that it's possible even with this....
fortran77··on Microsoft BitLocker – YellowKey zero-day exploit
On my newest laptop, an Asus Zenbook A16, the BIOS (a Insyde 309 3.08) has NO way to disable USB boot or even to change the boot priority. I enabled a BIOS password, secure boot, and a Bitlocker PIN (so my computer boots into a special boot screen before Bitlocker is unlocked) but I'm still not sure if this is enough.
fortran77··on Mullvad exit IPs are surprisingly identifying
I use aVPN when I’m traveling and want to order food delivery for my 93 year old mother in NY. UberEats and InstaCart will stop me from ordering when logged in my mom’s NY account if I’m in China, Saudi Arabia, India, Vietnam, etc.
fortran77··on Bitcoin trader recovers wallet with help of Claude
I use AI to help me do my accounting (how to categorize and account for things). It pays for itself because I need to spend money for far fewer hours from an accounting firm each month to make sure that captialized expenses, depreciation, tax credits (we have Historical Tax Credits from restoring an 1880s building) etc, is put in the books properly. The AI gets it right a high enough percentage of the time that I only the to have a real accountant look at things once a quarter to make sure it's all OK. I used to have a dozen questions every month.
fortran77··on A message from President Kornbluth about funding and the talent pipeline
I saw those videos of horrible people at MIT disrupting classes last year, with the school doing nothing. I'd rather spend the first two years cheaply at a local community college and then finish my undergrad degree at a nice State school than suffer through all that.
fortran77··on Deal reached with hackers to delete data stolen from the Canvas platform
They're paying them to delete the data?

> The company that operates online learning system Canvas said it struck a deal with hackers to delete the data they pilfered in a cyberattack that created chaos for students, many of them in the middle of finals.

How stupid can they be?

> The company acknowledged that there was no way to be sure that the data was erased for good, and said it took action because of concerns about potential publication of the data.

Why is the U.S. allowing Canvas to fund North Korean or Russian cyberterrorists?
