I'd love to see a "Labne" option
fortran77··on Azure Linux 4.0 is Microsoft's first general-purpose Linux
I develop C#/F# applications in Windows that run on Mac OS, iOS, Linux, and Windows. It's by far the best environment for this sort of thing. You can get native performance in a much lighter environment than those crappy electron apps.
fortran77··on Azure Linux 4.0 is Microsoft's first general-purpose Linux
Microsoft was a *nix supporter from the very beginning, with Microsoft Xenix.

I run Windows 11 Pro on it. I like it. I use WSL2 for command line/Docker stuff. If you're not insterested in using Windows 11 Pro as your main OS, I'd make sure someone's figured out how to run Linux native on it (and make sure all power management/audio/etc works!) before buying.
fortran77··on HP re-releases classic computer science calculator: The HP-16C
It's an "official licencee" so it's not actually HP manufacturing it. Still, I'd love to get one if it feels like the original.

I open settings on my iPhone (settings!) and it says "Don't Miss 3 Free Months of Arcade" and a misleading notification red circle icon.

I agree. I'm running Windows 11 Arm on an Asus Zenbook A16 right now. Lighting fast. I'm typing this comment while I'm compiling code and having Claude analyze packets coming from Wireshark that's on this machine. It's got 18 cores and 48GB of integrated memory, great battery life, and an OLED screen for $1699

I run Linux in a VM and Docker on it, and WSL2. No problems with anything.

I don't see any ads. I turn a number of "intrusive" features off, but nothing is hacked; these are just settings you can switch off.

(I am running Pro, though.)

fortran77··on A 10 year old Xeon is all you need
My current desktop machine is a 24-core Xeon-3345 with 256GB of RAM and an Nvidia 5090. It still feels extremely fast, even though it's about 8 year old technology with a newer video card.

I'm not bothered by a lot of tech that other's object to. I'm fine with having an Alex in my house, a connected car, Microsoft Windows. But I can't imagine consenting to _this_. There's too much personal data the can inadvertently collect, and too little oversight with little upside for me.
fortran77··on It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12
I love Windows Arm. My latest machine, an Asus Zenbook A16 is great. 18 core Snapdragon X2 extreme, 48 GB of memory, and OLED screen--all for $1699. It feels very fast, faster than my 24-core Xeon desktop (though benchmarks would put my Xeon ahead) and has great "all-day" battery life.

You can remove the screws on the bottom and replace the battery (which is screwed in, too, no glue to peel) or the M.2 NVME which is enough "servicability" for me....

In many counties there's a limit to how many small claims actions you can take in a year. (Where I live, it's 2).

FWIW, I couldn't follow it either from the blog.

Slavery is not OK. Someone indentured for owing a debt can be compelled for a maximum of six years and goes free in the seventh, with no payment required from him.

It's a shame that the moderators on Hacker News tolerate this.

You don't believe in anything, good for you. But it's not healthy for you to harbor so much hatred and anger for those with different opinions. You're free to worship your golden calf, but why not be civil?
fortran77··on Schlitz Is Gone, but First It's Getting One Last Hurrah
Jews don't eat hare. Hasenpfeffer is not a "Yiddish" word.
fortran77··on Schlitz Is Gone, but First It's Getting One Last Hurrah
As a native Yiddish speaker (it was my first language!) I can assure you that "Hasenpfeffer" is not a Yiddish dish, it is rabbit and most definitely _treif_. Yiddish speakers would not eat it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hasenpfeffer

Shleimiel and Shlmazal are yiddish, via Hebrew.

Well, maybe I shouldn't have assumed the harness wasn't a big deal. When Microsoft changes its pricing on 6/1 I'll try some of the others.
