fortran77··on 'Toy Story 2' – A Classic Movie Nearly Destroyed by a Single Line of Code
> When Pixar employees went looking for the lost data, they discovered that the backup systems were not working properly—and nobody was aware until it was too late.

I've been in several companies where we discovered that the backups didn't really work. What on earth were we paying the IT people for if they never tested file recovery?

fortran77··on Where to Find the Colors Your Screen Can't Show You
I'm having an amazing time seeing colors now because I just had cataract surgery on my right eye (left eye next month) and have a clear lens again. If I compare my new right eye to my old left eye, I'm seeing colors I haven't seen in decades. Skies look blue with my right eye, gray with my left.

It's odd he noted Apple monitiers were "better". Maybe but marginally. Many options for other platforms, like Asus Pro Arte, beat it handily. And profressional color graders use Sony BVM series (Trimaster HX / OLED) for HDR or Flanders Scientific (FSI) DM/XM series or Eizo ColorEdge CG series. You won't see a single Mac at a movie studio for movie editing or color grading.

fortran77··on Americans express unease over SpaceX's influence on retirement savings
You can opt to put some or all of your 401K into a "Value fund"

VVIAX (Vanguard) or FLCOX (Fidelity)

to reduce your exposure to the highest of high-flying stocks.

Of course, many small company 401Ks limit your investment options to a small family of high expense ratio funds...

fortran77··on Windows 11 update broke the Recycle Bin, OneDrive, and your PC's stability
I flagged it, too. It was a big nothingburger.
fortran77··on The founder of Craigslist has given away half a billion dollars
I remember in the early days of Craigslist, I interviewed for a job with someone who advertised there. After the third interview, they offered me a job--with no money. They wanted to pay in shares of this tiny startup. I had explicitly asked them--I took good notes--in interview #1 if they had an actual opening for an actual job.

I filed a lawsuit in Santa Clara county for "Fraudulent Misrepresentation" and they settled with me for $5,000. (California law is very good on this. They broke two laws with no cash wages and a non-compliant job posting.) But I also told Craig Newmark, because they had their job listing on Craigslist. He pulled their job listings, and sent me an email assuring me that nobody associated with the company would ever be able to advertise on Craigslist again. I was very impressed.

fortran77··on Show HN: Are You in the Weights?
If you average all of them together, it's close:

If I spell my name in Hebrew othography, it comes even closer

But none are exactly right.

fortran77··on Made a free macOS menu bar app that fixes typing in the wrong keyboard layout
Wow! I didn't think anyone on the mac cared about this. It was one of many annoyances that keeps me off that platform.

On Windows, there's a setting under "Advanced keyboard settings” called “Let me use a different input method for each app window.”

I can keep this turned on and if I'm writing a document in Word in עברית and I have my broswer open in English, I can switch back and forth and not have to hit WIN+SPACE to swap lanaguages.

fortran77··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
I run pro, so I have a group policy that eliminates forced reboots. For most users, forcing updates isn't a bad idea.

fortran77··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
I don't know what the disconnect is. I'm running Windows 11 Arm right now on the best laptop I've ever owned -- an Asus Zenbook A16 with OLED screen and 48 GB of RAM (all for $1699).

It's super fast -- it beats a 2026 Macbook Pro rendering Blender "Classroom".

I have a Microsoft account, I don't know what the big deal is. I follow the happy path. It's nice to have settings (and I can control which ones) sync across machines. I pay for a Office365 subscription.

I don't see ads popping up anywhere. I did disable about a dozen things (those silly icons in the search bar, syncing desktop icons across machines, etc) all through exposed UI switches, no "hacks" or undocumented registry tweaks.

I've watched coworkers go through all sorts of contortions, and downloading hacked binaries from sketchy sites, just to avoid creating the local account and I'm not sure why. I use my name and info on my longstanding Microsoft account, but you can just as easily call one "mymaxasus_11111", and be done with it.

fortran77··on Windows 11 users are tired of MS account requirements creeping into everything
Microsoft offers it, but they don't need to store it. I store my bitlocker keys locally. (Printed out in a safe).
fortran77··on What even is food authenticity? Why we guard carbonara, and flatten chicken rice
The same point as the "meme" quoted in the article, but a little more raw/cheekier. More like "it's a waste of time to speuclate on what might have been."
fortran77··on What even is food authenticity? Why we guard carbonara, and flatten chicken rice
"If my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bike" is a bowdlerization of a much older phrase. As my Great-Grandfather, born in 1890 in Widz, Belaruz would say it "ווען די באָבע וואָלט געהאַט בײצִים, װאָלט זי געװען מײַן זײדע" (If my grandmother had balls, she would have been my grandfather.)

fortran77··on Who's the smartest corvid?
Birds chase coyotes so they slam into the sides of cliff walls, sometimes even painting a fake tunnel to fool the coyote.
fortran77··on Ask HN: Why hasn't there been a real competitor to Ticketmaster yet?
Why does Hacker News hate us old people so much? Of course, I usually only see old acts (the B52s / Devo show was great!) and most of the audiences for those are 60+ years old, like me. Next week, I'm seeing Steve Forbert!
fortran77··on An Ohio Valley 100k-watt FM signal is severed in broad daylight

fortran77··on An Ohio Valley 100k-watt FM signal is severed in broad daylight
That's 100,000 watts "ERP"- the actual power in the transmission line can be as low as 5,000 watts. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effective_radiated_power
