fortran77··on The HSBC app refuses to work if "Bitwarden" is installed on user's Android phone
I think it may be because of a sideloaded app. That does seem like a more reasonable thing to warn about.
fortran77··on Turning an old Amazon Kindle into a eInk development platform (2021)
I broke my old kindle when trying to open it. His nice description on how to get inside would have been a big help…

fortran77··on Employee commits suicide after MongoDB fired her during mental health leave
I’m not sure about third party responsibility for suicide. It’s a horrible, tragic situation.

fortran77··on AI Police Reports: Year in Review
Are you an LLM that misspelled “they’re” intentionally?
fortran77··on Flock Exposed Its AI-Powered Cameras to the Internet. We Tracked Ourselves
Interesting, but nothing new. Shodan users have known about clueless IP camera owners that leave their cameras on the public internet for years. This is a little more interesting because it's from a well-funded startup rather than independently owned Chinese IP cameras.

fortran77··on 1.5 TB of VRAM on Mac Studio – RDMA over Thunderbolt 5
On Intel Motherboards, it's easy to find ones that can take 2TB of RAM, for example: https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/x14sbw-tf

This seems suboptimal.

I cut my teeth on Fortran and am still very active in the Fortran community. Or what’s left of it anyway.

fortran77··on The Gorman Paradox: Where Are All the AI-Generated Apps?
Steve Jobs once came to speak at my company when he was running NeXT. Almost nobody came to the talk, in the company cafeteria. The CEO of our company had to make an announcement on the PA encouraging folks to come. Finally, about 20 people (out of ~750) showed up.

He started talking aobut Objective-C and how it was 10x more productive than other programming languages and how easy it is to write good applications quickly with it. Someone shouted out the question: "If it's so easy and fast to write applications, where are all the NeXT killer apps?" There was no good answer....

fortran77··on Show HN: Automated license plate reader coverage in the USA
I'm a private citizen. On my house we have an ALPR Axis camera pointing down the street (in addition to Axis cameras around the whole perimiter.) And when the police ask, we almost always provide them with data. I feel perfectly justified doing this, and we've helped solved several crimes.
fortran77··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
While I'm not sure about this ban, _something_ is causing normally nice, peaceful Australia to be somewhere I don't feel safe anymore. My relatives in Melbourne have left, after being physically attacked and had their property vandalized by mostly young "activist" types who, no doubt, get all their news from social media.
fortran77··on In New York City, congestion pricing leads to marked drop in pollution
This is actually a major nitpick. If this "study" is this sloppy, what else isn't quite true?

fortran77··on Ask HN: Should "I asked $AI, and it said" replies be forbidden in HN guidelines?
Sometimes AI gives such a surprising or unusual answer to a question that it's worth a discussion. I think it should be discouraged but not "forbidden".

fortran77··on Why xor eax, eax?
Back when I did IBM 370 BAL Assembly Language, we did the same thing to clear a register to zero.

XR 15,15 XOR REGISTER 15 WITH REGISTER 15
vs

  L 15,=F'0' LOAD REGISTER 15 WITH 0
This was alleged to be faster on the 370 because because XR operated entirely within the CPU registers, and L (Load) fetched data from memory (i.e.., the constant came from program memory).

fortran77··on Windows drive letters are not limited to A-Z
It's baffling tha[t] after 59 years , Unix is still stuck in a weird directory naming structure inherited from the the late 60s that no longer make[s] sense when nobody has floppy drives.
