You are exactly right. There's a description here:

These cameras are considered a "secure biometric" device and AFAIK nobody has faked them. I've flagged the poster who said "try two flat images"

fortran77··on Discord/Twitch/Snapchat age verification bypass
Windows Hello cameras are all "depth" cameras so a flat photo won't pass muster.

Third Amendment issues come up every now and then. For example, legislators have tried to force airlines to provide special services for U.S. military at their own expense:

I'm not saying these men and women aren't deserving, but the taxpayers should foot the bill. A private property owner shouldn't be forced to. Fortunaely, these bills never get far.

fortran77··on Man, 83, tricked by scammers, gets 21 years to life for killing Uber driver
Yes, and nobody here is disagreeing with you.
fortran77··on Man, 83, tricked by scammers, gets 21 years to life for killing Uber driver
Agreed. She shouldn't have been there--not that it was her fault, but Uber shouldn't pick up packages and deliver them to others. Some other service should do that, and it should make contact with both sender and receiver first to make sure everything is on the up-and-up.
fortran77··on Man, 83, tricked by scammers, gets 21 years to life for killing Uber driver
I'm not withoit any sympathy for the man. But if you choose to have a handgun you have to be 100% responsible for its use. I've owned guns when I've lived in rural areas, but I don't own one in Silicon Valley because I think the risk outweighs the benefit.
fortran77··on Man, 83, tricked by scammers, gets 21 years to life for killing Uber driver
It's very hard to make people understand how scammers use third parties. Mom 92 year-old mother mailed a check that was stolen in the mail, had the name changed, and was e-deposited.

My brother (a lawyer!) wanted to sue the person whose name is on the check! I had to convince him not to bother; that the person's account that the check was deposited to was probably some other victom who was tricked into giving the bank login information away and his account was being unwittingly used to launder checks. The scammer was most likely overseas, but pays U.S. Post Office employees to steal envelopes that likely contain checks and send images (See https://www.justice.gov/usao-ct/pr/former-postal-employee-se... for example)

The bank reversed the check but we had to get a notarized statement from my mom, and it was a hassle for a 92 year old.

As far as this case goes, guns should only be used in self-defense when there's an immediate danger. Not punitively. This guy's life wasn't immediately being threatened and he deserves to have the book thrown at him.

fortran77··on We had sex in a Chinese hotel, then found we had been broadcast to thousands
It would be very easy to do this in nearly any hotel that has no-click or simple click-through WiFi. A tiny box affixed to the back of the TV set, or someone opening up the clock radios that most Hotels still have and adding a camera and an ESP-32.

Hotels should look for devices that seem to stay on their wifi for a long time.

Of course, if it's profitable you can just use a cell modem and pay for the service and not be on the hotel WiFi

fortran77··on NIMBYs aren't just shutting down housing
He probably shouldn't call his group "Yimby Law". Just like if you're not a PE you can't (legally) call your company "Foobar Engineering" in most states.

If he tries to incorprate as "Yimby Law" he may hit a roadblock in some areas. Secretaries of State regulate business entity names and often bar or scrutinize words that imply a regulated profession (e.g., “bank,” “trust,” sometimes “law”) if you are not licensed or not forming the appropriate kind of professional corporation.

However he's free to send a letter, just not incorporate a business called "Yimby Law". He should change it to "Yimby Citizens Group" or "Yimby Institute" or something.

fortran77··on OpenClaw is what Apple intelligence should have been
No no no. It's too risky, cutting-edge, and dangerous. While fun to play with, it's not something I'd trust my 92 year old mother with dementia (who still uses an iPad) with.
fortran77··on Building a 24-bit arcade CRT display adapter from scratch
The Pico PIO has an instruction set and can be programmed.

You write PIO assembly that runs autonomously on a state machine, with explicit timing (e.g., out, in, set, mov, jmp, wait) and cycle‑accurate interfaces. The CPU communicates via small FIFOs, and interrupts are optional; the PIO can be “fire‑and‑forget” for many protocols.

fortran77··on Building a 24-bit arcade CRT display adapter from scratch
The key here is the "PIO" which you won't find on a Teensy. It lets you do extreme "bit banging" tricks including generating video. People have even implemented Ethernet on it. I've used it for some custom serial protocols ("Weigand") used by alarm panels.

The voters of NYC got _exactly_ what they wanted and deserve.

They voted to “seize the means of production.” This was one of the few promises delivered. May they enjoy it!

I made a choice, too. I cancelled my annual NYC trip in January to see friends and went to Miami instead.
