fortran77··on Apple Silicon and Virtual Machines: Beating the 2 VM Limit (2023)
I buy a $100 Windows 11 Pro licence, and my limit is 1024 VMs

Hyper‑V on Windows 11 supports up to 1024 simultaneous VMs per host if the hardware can handle it. On my little Windows ARM laptop I can easily run 4 VMs before it runs out of steam.

fortran77··on Old laptops in a colo as low cost servers
They remove the battery! That was my first question.

I have an old Lenovo laptop that works fine with the battery completely removed--but I have to disconnect the power and reconnect it before the soft power-on switch will work. I wonder how they handle powering on finicky laptops with those "soft" power buttons.

fortran77··on I ported Mac OS X to the Nintendo Wii
There was a Windows NT 4.0 for PowerPC. And several people have had this running on the Wii. https://github.com/Wack0/entii-for-workcubes

Much easier to do, because of the superior, more modern architecture of Windows NT. (It's not based on Apollo-era OS like OSX is.)

fortran77··on "The new Copilot app for Windows 11 is really just Microsoft Edge"
Every electron app is really just a browser, isn't it?
fortran77··on Bernie Sanders: "AI Is a Threat to Everything the American People Hold Dear"
That would be off-topic.
fortran77··on Bernie Sanders: "AI Is a Threat to Everything the American People Hold Dear"
I'm the one who posted this link, and I think Bernie Sanders is a terible man. But an op-ed by a U.S. Senator in the WSJ about a tech issue seems like proper HN material. It's been un-flagged by the mods.

fortran77··on Bernie Sanders: "AI Is a Threat to Everything the American People Hold Dear"
I think flagging an op-ed by a sitting Senator that appeared in the WSJ is an abuse of the flagging system. I don’t like Bernie at all, but I thought it was a very relevant item to post.
fortran77··on A macOS bug that causes TCP networking to stop working after 49.7 days
Nobody keeps their Macs running for more than 49.7 days? We have Windows Servers here (with long-term TCP/IP connections) that are only rebooted every 6 months to apply patches.

fortran77··on Ask HN: How do systems (or people) detect when a text is written by an LLM
And I'm sure we've all seen what happens if you run the Declaration of Independence or the Gettysburg Address or the book of Genesis through an AI "detector". They usually come back as AI.
fortran77··on My Google Workspace account suspension
At least he owns his own domain and can eventually switch over. A few years ago we decided to switch our personal emails from gmail accounts to domains we own (though the email is still handled by google.) This way if we ever lose our google account, we can switch the MX and be able to get all our recovery emails, bank second factors, password recoveries, etc.

fortran77··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
I don't know if you're kidding, but I agree with you. I use the Copilot CLI in VS Code and Visual Studio and it works better than anything else. I do use Claude models with it....
fortran77··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
These drive my password manager nuts, especially when there are actually different logins for them. I just put a note in it saying exactly what service it's for.

fortran77··on Random numbers, Persian code: A mysterious signal transfixes radio sleuths
I think they do this, too.

However, the numbers stations transmissions are never a big secret. They're intentionally powerful so someone can pick them up on simple equipment without raising suspicion. A person can modify an off-the-shelf AM radio to pick up shortwave, for example, even in an oppressive regime.

It's a one-time pad, so the encryption is unbreakable.

fortran77··on If You Need a Laptop, Buy It Now
Technology for things like laptops generally gets better. I still think it's best to buy technology when you need it, not sooner.

fortran77··on I built a 516-panel financial terminal in 3 weeks using AI
Even if the data were accurate, I'm going to stick with the cheapest vanguard broad market mutual fund. Almost nobody can beat that, if you have a decade or more.

fortran77··on Tell HN: Chrome says "suspicious download" when trying to download yt-dlp

fortran77··on FTC action against Match and OkCupid for deceiving users, sharing personal data
If it’s a joke, it’s disgusting. If you think it’s a joke, you’re homophobic.

If it’s not a joke, it’s a serious trust violation.

Either way it’s bad. Considering the downvotes, I’m saddened that Hacker News thinks this is ok behavior from Newsom.

fortran77··on Turning a MacBook into a touchscreen with $1 of hardware (2018)
All my Windows laptops have touch screens and I love it. What is the problem with having another input method available? You only use it when it’s appropriate.
fortran77··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
Yes. I don't mind AI submissions to my hobby projects as long as there's a person behind it. Only fully automated slop I mind. Before AI I used to get all sorts of PRs from people changing a comment or a line of documentation just so they can get more green squares on their GitHub summary. Plus ça change....

A line at the bottom of PRs, reports, etc that says "authored with the help of Copilot" is fine.

fortran77··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
And everyone thought they were cool! Mac zeolots still put "Made with a Mac" on their webpages.
fortran77··on Copilot edited an ad into my PR
Well, CoPilot is a GitHub technology, and they're telling you that AI wrote the PR. It's not _that_ bad. I suppose they could distill it to "Written with CoPilot" with a link for more information.
fortran77··on Philly courts will ban all smart eyeglasses starting next week
I would think that most people in a courtroom (defendants, jurors, lawyers, members of the public) would be prohibitied from filming most court proceedings with any sort of audio/video recording device. So this "ban" is really just a clarification.
