forinti··on Oracle shed about 20k roles globally in the last year
It seems reckless and unnecessary even if the gamble were 100% a sure thing, which no gamble ever is.

Even if AI is a game changer, it doesn't mean that your business model will have a role in it.

forinti··on Oracle shed about 20k roles globally in the last year
The good bits will be sold off. Some of their products are very valuable, even if you don't like them.
forinti··on Oracle shed about 20k roles globally in the last year
It doesn't seem rational to me that such a big company wouldn't prefer to diversify.
forinti··on 8086 Segmented Memory was a good idea
I knew a bit of 6502 assembly, so I was happy just to have more RAM and more registers.

Looking back, the simplicity of the instruction set seems quaint next to the thousands of instructions we have today.

forinti··on Ask HN: Will programmers write more efficient code during the memory shortage?
I'll just recognise that I'm old (and a bit grumpy): back in the day, if you didn't write minimally efficient code, it simply wouldn't run or it would be terribly slow.

Young devs have not been exposed to this and they can get away with writing inefficient code most of the time, sometimes all of the time.

And even if there is a RAM shortage, we are still in the Gigabyte age. So I don't think we will go back to cycle and byte counting.

I can't even get some devs to care if their query runs in 3s or 8ms.

forinti··on Big Banana Car
That's just not enough motive to waste someone's time.

And, no offense intended, that car is not that interesting. I guess policing must be boring.

forinti··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
If it were outsourced to somewhere "nice", it would surely be mentioned: designed in Italy, built in Germany, hand polished by a Buddhist priest in Japan, etc.
forinti··on The history of butterfly swimming
The first modern Olympics did have sack races. That would be entertaining.
forinti··on The history of butterfly swimming
I think the objective is to show how strong you are. If you wanna go fast, use freestyle, if you want to conserve energy, use breaststroke or backstroke. I don't see a reason to use the butterfly outside of a butterfly competition.
forinti··on ReactOS (FOSS "Windows") achieves 3D-accelerated Half-Life on real hardware
Windows is going downhill so fast, I fear ReactOS won't be relevant before Windows becomes irrelevant.

Maybe ReactOS will live after Windows as an option for people with critical applications that for some reason won't run on Linux.

If ReactOS had worked this well 20 years ago, I would probably have used it (I did try it a couple of times). Today I just don't need it.

forinti··on Sam Bankman-Fried loses bid to appeal against fraud conviction in FTX case
I know people with doctorates who can't organise their lives. Being a good student does not make you smart in all aspects of your life.
forinti··on Using the Epson Perfection V39 II Scanner on Ubuntu
My mom recently asked me to print something on her old HP printer from her laptop with Windows.

I was having a hard time (the laptop runs very slowly although it is an i5 with 16GB of RAM) so I installed hplip on my laptop and printed it from there.

I had to smile at how easy things have become in Linux that Windows got me frustrated and Linux solved the issue so quickly.

forinti··on Lines of code got a better publicist
It shows good character to own your mistakes.
forinti··on Lines of code got a better publicist
Sceptic is the UK spelling of skeptic.

Maybe you've confused it with septic?

forinti··on Where is the AI jobs crisis?
AI will make those folks much more productive. They'll push a lot more paper around.
forinti··on Sam Bankman-Fried applies for a pardon from Trump
He spent a lot of money on political donations. I don't think it was from the goodness of his heart.
forinti··on Computex 2026: Are We Heading for the Agentic PC Era Yet?
There's a billboard near my home with an ad for "AI designed glasses".
forinti··on Every Byte Matters
So if you need speed, you just have to swallow your OO programmer's pride and put your data in arrays.
forinti··on Americans don't know how to fight AI so they're fighting data centers
Exactly. There are many costs associated with data centers regardless of the type of data processing they do.
forinti··on Superintelligence: The Idea That Eats Smart People (2016)
There's a story about some Kenyans outrunning a Cheetah in 6km. It had been killing their livestock, so they decided to go after it.

Cheetahs are very fast, but humans have way more endurance.

forinti··on US healthcare still stupidly expensive, with pathetic outcomes, study finds
Which only leads us to another problem: food.

You can't have a healthy society if all policies are dictated by corporations.

forinti··on Ahoy, DECmate II the little PDP-8 that could
Funny you should mention this. Every time I see something related to MSX, I can sense the smell of the plastic.
forinti··on To have a moral stance on AI is to be an outcast, and it sucks
I'm pretty sure the genie will put itself back in the bottle when the bubble bursts. But it will leave its tail outside.
forinti··on To have a moral stance on AI is to be an outcast, and it sucks
Calculators give you the right answer. AI gives you any answer. I work within a bureaucracy and instead of optimising processes and getting rid of useless documents, AI is being used to generate more useless text. It is the industrialisation of bureaucracy and it is a turbo powered waste of resources.
forinti··on To have a moral stance on AI is to be an outcast, and it sucks
I have had a little success by arguing that "we can live without AI, but we can't live without X" and then I've managed to get some priorities in order. The AI craze is insane and it does have some support inside IT but it's the pressure from outside that's hard to resist.
forinti··on I'm Tired of Talking to AI
I spent many holidays in Uruguay in the 80s and early 90s.

I loved cartoons, but TV was only on at 10am, so I had to go out and play. If we went to my grandparents' beach house, there was an old vacuum tube TV that took hours to heat up so mostly I didn't bother to use it. I watched Tyson's defeat to Buster Douglas on that TV and the next morning there was still a little point of light in the centre of the screen because it also took a long time to go completely blank.

So not having access to TV was liberating. I wouldn't mind having no Internet on weekends today.

forinti··on Why Did South Africa Relinquish Its Nuclear Weapons?
> It also promoted a strongly anti-communist ideology, arguing that racial equality was a communist plot to destroy the country.

This has to be the most cynical "communist threat" ever.

forinti··on An OpenAI model has disproved a central conjecture in discrete geometry
AI is already too old for that.
forinti··on I’ve built a virtual museum with nearly every operating system you can think of
Or a search option. That would be nice.
forinti··on Iran will impose fees on subsea internet cables in Strait of Hormuz
There are no rules. There's just what's convenient for some US corporations.

The US has been forcing on Latin America whatever some US corporation wants for more than a century. We've had coups over bananas!
