forestrywat··on The Future Belongs to the Weird
I don't think that's what they were saying. I think they were saying worst case you dealt with local bigots. These days the whole of America's bigots are coming for you because of the internet.
forestrywat··on Anthropic tells staff to work from home due to possible security team strike
There is a human who is negotiating against the union. Anthropic can find that human and apply leverage.
forestrywat··on Anthropic tells staff to work from home due to possible security team strike
I think the parent poster is saying, "management, get your fucking head on straight and negotiate properly".
forestrywat··on Anthropic tells staff to work from home due to possible security team strike
So you go to the building owner and say, "give them what they want or we walk." Security team probably doesn't want outrageous changes. Building owner probably just being greedy.
forestrywat··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
Citation very much needed. Society today is full of people in power who exploit others. Cops, ceos, spouses, etc. Very rarely are they "made an example of", and when they are it doesn't seem to change the intuitions.
forestrywat··on The Future Belongs to the Weird
I'm 50. And agree, back in the 90s things were different. But we're sliding way way way back over the past five years.
forestrywat··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
There is potential harm. That's the point.
forestrywat··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
Because tests aren't completely innocuous? Because tests lead people to make significant medical decisions?

Look at the supplements world, where grifters are shilling chemicals that cause harm and make radical claims for absurd markups. Or gas station pills. You want those companies making Alzheimer's tests? People going in to a 7-11 and buying a "all illness test card" that tells people they do or don't have degenerative diseases?

No, it's very very important to ensure tests are actually indicative and ensure they are well made. To do that, a regulating body needs to be involved.

forestrywat··on The Future Belongs to the Weird
We sure do punish people for being weird, and it's definitely seeing an increase. Ask any gay, trans, disabled, neurodiverse, furry, anarchist, or other outsider group whether life has gotten easier lately.

Guarantee it's almost (but not quite) universally no.

forestrywat··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
So you are suggesting less truth is good? That we should come here and post lies because that's more fair? Absurd.
forestrywat··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
What if it's genuine?

I use kagi. The results quality is pretty good, but I probably use the uprank and downrank feature all the time. Being able to report stuff as AI and get little indicators that a site is AI slop is good.

As an example, serious eats is my go to recipe site, and I've got it tuned so it returns higher in my results.

I also really appreciate I can write my own custom css, and style every box and widget on the page.

And marine most of all, I love that their AI tool will not show up unless you end your query with a "?". Meaning I'm explicitly opting in to using it.

My last reason for liking it is ideological. No ads, no manipulation because of advertising tech. Just ... the stuff I searched for.

I do not like the image search page, however. It feels clunky in a way I can't put my finger on.

There's a few other things I really like, but it's hard to type them all out. So I often go, "kagi is great, love kagi."

forestrywat··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Oh there are many, many parts. By land area, probably most. But not by population.
forestrywat··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Done. Now what? NYC is still being run pretty well?
forestrywat··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
No idea why you got flagged here, you've pretty clearly said reasonable things.
forestrywat··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Did the parent say clean energy or cheap energy? Obviously yes, coal.

Though coal has dropped as a percentage of their portfolio fairly dramatically, and in absolute twh has been stable since 2010, with other energy sources growing.

forestrywat··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Why would anyone, even one of his supporters, care about the stated goal? The man has decades of pursuing goals other than his stated goals. You'd have to be profoundly naive.
forestrywat··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
My friend, sometimes the truth is partisan. And in those cases it absolutely belongs on HN.
forestrywat··on Canada suspends trade negotiations with USA and match tariffs dollar for dollar
Or they'll raise prices by that ten percent and become the marginal supplier. No way they're going to accept a loss. (Many items shipped into the USA of late have tariff related fees.)
forestrywat··on Pixel 11 Pro Fold feels like the end of an era
I cannot understand how people can tolerate the crease. It's so visible on every foldable. And it's simply not acceptable to my eyes.
forestrywat··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Do you have a citation for that?
forestrywat··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
Depends on where you work. And what "see a doctor" means.
forestrywat··on Meta's blockbuster trial draws parallels to big tobacco
This, with a decent regulatory agency, wouldn't be that difficult to manage. We really could just say "infinite scrolling" and then add more things to the list as needed. We do it with firearms, medicines, drugs, vehicle parts, and about a million other things.
forestrywat··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Where do you fall on "Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?" ? Israel saying things, the thing happening, but no clear orders from the top.
forestrywat··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
The only assertion I made about the right is that the proportion of antisemitism is higher. There are absolutely people on the right who are altruistic. Just like there are people on the left who are antisemitic.
forestrywat··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
One, China is also committing genocide.

Two, the intent is clearly genocide. Listen to Ben-Gvir.

forestrywat··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Don't we typically call that ad hominem? And secondly, is your claim that every single one of these hundreds of large orgs are historically politically or religiously anti Israel? I get that of course Iran is not a valid opinion, but all the rest? That stretches credulity.
forestrywat··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
It sure does presuppose that. Because that's not really a factual debate at this point. See my comment higher.

I agree not all wars are genocides. This one is.

And people can get hypothermia any time their body temp is below 35C. Which, yes, can happen at 20C. (Which you'll note is in fact lower than 35C.)

forestrywat··on Israel creates fake think tank in likely attempt to dupe AI chatbots
Not at all obviously. Israel is committing a genocide. This is not really a matter of discussion... you think several parts of the UN, Amnesty International, Doctors Without Borders, the international association of genocide scholars, the international federation for human rights, Human Rights Watch, the Hague Group, the governments of Ghana, Malaysia, Mexico, China, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Ireland, (and dozens of others), the African Union, the Jewish voice for peace, and dozens of small orgs just all... got it wrong?

Why should I believe a random HN comment warrior over literally hundreds of organizations and governments whose jobs include identifying genocide when it happens? What makes your case so compelling it stands up against all that and what my own eyes see?

No. It's a genocide.

forestrywat··on U.S. Declared an Energy Emergency, Then Paid $4B for Less Energy
A few days ago I posted that the US is thinking small and short term. And that China, for all its faults, is at least rationally looking at the future and investing in renewables.

It's exactly stuff like this that I'm talking about. Just... Peltola corrupt policy that benefits no one except a few very rich people, and Congress seems totally fine with it.

Like, why is this even partisan? Why aren't the most ardent right wingers going, "we're losing to China on high tech energy!" I recognize that comes from a place of xenophobia, but at least it would make sense to me. Instead we get investments into oil and gas, cutting projects that clearly would help the country. It's stunning.

forestrywat··on The National Park Service Is Using Flock. Rangers Are Pissed
It's really really really simple, and I can see you are struggling. Local, disconnected, highly visible cameras that store pictures for a single person's use? Great. Centralized control over a mesh of networked cameras, queryable by a government without a warrant at any time? Bad.
