I have, over the years, toyed with -- and still do -- the notion of moving to Brooklyn or perhaps further out into Long Island. Love the place. Home of the best pizza outside of Naples to be sure.

I think the majority of these companies suck at so much because they try and be all things to all people. In unity there is strength, but when you try to do it all, you fail.
I don't trust Google because they have their fingers in every pie on the Internet. They want to make money, money, money with little thought of anything else or what it takes to get there or how much privacy is looted. Yahoo is an also ran with little hope of being anything more than what it was and is.
Sometimes you have to sacrifice to make do for your family by moving, whatever. It's always better to sacrifice money than time from your children. As long as you are making it and saving a little and have a bit for holidays, nothing else really matters. Getting rich should never be the goal.
I would like, at the very least, to see a federal law forbidding more than 40 hours max. The world has really deteriorated in regard to family life since the 80s. When everything started becoming 24-7, that's when the decline began. I remember the sanity of the 80s whilst living in a couple of countries in western Europe at the time. The pace of life was better, more family time, the fun challenge of getting a popular restaurant reservation before they closed at a sane hour. It wasn't all about profit then like it is now.
I make it clear to my current employer that I don't do nights and weekends. When I leave the office at 1700, I'm unemployed. My wife and children come first.
There was an attempt to get Window Maker back in the limelight last year. Not sure where this has gone...
Another thing I want to do is find a router that allows host files and script regular updates. It would be great to never have to install extensions or tinker with hosts file for every box on the network. I've also said I'd be interested in seeing a proxy server that strips out all of this stuff so no maintenance on the user end is required.
Most parents simply turn their children loose with whatever device and hope for the best. Having worked for many years in IT security and knowing what's out there, any Internet-connected device the kids use must be used within the presence of an adult at all times. No mobile phones or connected devices in their bedrooms -- ever. When they leave home, they can have them, but until then, I err on the side of caution.
I have the right to browse the Internet without being tracked, my data sold without my permissions, have targeted ads delivered my way, you name it.
I've often thought about setting up a colo proxy server for people that strips out all ads, beacons, tracking cookies, you name it -- and give it away for free. With cheap hosting and unlimited bandwidth, this could be a good thing.
Can have security issues if not done correctly.

Mobile devices are really going to usher in a whole new look at crime and potential guilt. The fact that police can now take your mobile and dump its contents during routine traffic stops in many countries is hugely alarming.
In addition to this on Firefox at least I invoke about:config and make several settings changes:
- I disable prefetch.
- I disable media.peerconnect.
- I disable geo tracking.
- I disable HTTP/S referer.
- I disable DOM storage.
- I disable visited link tracking.
I also use EasyList, EasyPrivacy, and Malware domains adblock subscriptions.
In addition, as a Linux user, I want to use Flash on those sites that use it, but I don't want to deal with LSOs tracking me, so I take advantage of Flash by sending those LSOs to /dev/null. The Website is none the wiser and I get the benefit of the Website.
rm -rf .adobe
rm -rf .macromedia
ln -s /dev/null .adobe
ln -s /dev/null .macromedia
Surf with relative comfort knowing that you've already paid for your Internet connection with cash, no need to give away more of your privacy than needed. Blocking ads is great if you use any social media, as you don't have to see the sodden ads.
Please, no one really cares about the makeup of companies except those people who will never work for them anyway. It's like what's happening in the UK at the moment. Everything is so politically correct. My cousin is a detective just south of London, and he now has to treat suspects with kid gloves unlike just a few years ago. He actually has to knock on doors if the suspect is a muslim and wait for their prayers to finish before proceeding. If diversity insistence and this PC tripe that makes life more difficult. Companies should NOT be even percentages of this colour or that gender "just because". It's stupid and most people agree it's stupid. Unless of course your're PC...
- Universal, socialised medicine - Universal, Scandinavian-style free secondary education - Mandatory military or social service for two years to mature people and get them to see life in a different way - A radical shift towards solving human problems instead of pursuing greed
For over a decade, I have blocked all ads, beacons, filtered cookies to just what I use and delete on logoff, disallow all tracking, disallow HTTP/S referrer, disallow visited links history, use a proxy server, you name it.
I have a right to not be traded like raw info. I tend to pay cash at the supermarket (Aldi), use a credit union instead of a for-profit bank, anything to piss off marketers, money grubbers, and capitalist thieves who see me as nothing more than a money-making opportunity.
Never, ever feel guilty about taking time off, especially if you have a wife and children. It's your moral duty not only to them, but to yourself as well. If you're single, you still need to spend more time away from work than you do at work.
The American notion of the American dream is just that -- a dream. Spend more time with family and friends than you do at work. Limit yourself to 40 hours only. If you can't do it in 40, it doesn't need doing. Don't work nights or weekends unless your business is geared to those hours, e.g. restaurant-based IT, hotels, you get it.
When you go home at night, you're unemployed. Set up emails and texts to reply you are busy. I set the expectation with my bosses that I am unavailable nights and weekends. My family come first. Full stop. Money can be made anywhere, my family is more important. I have one family and one life. I cannot hit the rewind button. You choose your legacy: time spent with loved ones or time making money for people that don't love you. You choose. This is not an attack on hard work, it's an attack on obsessiveness to get ahead. It's not required to have a good life. France is right. Work after 35 hours sucks, as do unwanted email and text missives after COB.
The far right in this country have driven home their stupid Ayn Rand message and too many people have listened. We now have the most polarized government since the Civil War.
The right believe that their way is the only way. To them everything is a zero sum game.
I would settle for a Scandinavian or Swiss-style system. The older I get, the less I like capitalism as described by the right.
You cannot hit the rewind button. Ever. Once you miss your children's youth because you're chasing the money, you are failing them morally. Get a 9-5 like other people and call it good. Children don't care that daddy and mommy are rich -- they care about you being there. Full stop.
I agree with making progress, but there is just so much NIH syndrome out there when it comes to new languages, development practices, you name it. I honestly miss the older days when I was doing simpler Perl stuff. The expectation was for me to solve a discreet problem, not enable a group of people to ramp up to a billion dollar company in less than a year.
Startups that focus on the money always do worse than those who focus on delivering good software, services, whatever. Solve a problem and the money will come naturally. There is really nothing new under the sun, just different ways to do things. Lately, I just want to solve problems, not come up with "new" things.
