footy··on Leak confirms OpenAI is preparing ads on ChatGPT for public roll out
most of the world not caring doesn't mean it's not bad.
footy··on AI has a deep understanding of how this code works
> I like a tough challenge and I was hoping to attract your attention.

thanks for the comedy material.

footy··on What OpenAI did when ChatGPT users lost touch with reality
you don't spend a lot of time around urbanists, do you?
footy··on AI has a deep understanding of how this code works
it reads like humiliation fetish material honestly. I'd delete my account but he just doubles down.

> AI decided to do so and I didn't question it

in response to someone asking about why the author name doesn't match the contributor's name. Incredible response.

footy··on Rebecca Heineman has died
Same as their playbook here in Canada. It's disgusting.
footy··on A67z
I might be too middle aged to understand. Is this a joke? It's absurd. How did this get funded?
footy··on [dead]
Ah yes, the uncomfortable, never before explored hypotheses that men are better than women and white people superior to all others. Regularly put forward by, shockingly, white men.

The guy just got lucky stealing work from a woman who was better than him. Doesn't mean we have to listen to him.

footy··on You can just read 25 books
If I could only read 25 books (I have read 80-something books this year) none of this would be this business self-help pablum.

(That said _The Wide Wide Sea_ is good). 1/25.

footy··on Gov Shutdown: US Army is advising its soldiers in Germany to go to food banks

footy··on Tech workers' fight for living wages and a 32-hour workweek is a battle for all
Same. I work 4 days a week, and most weeks I work 32 hours (some weeks I am excited about what I am doing and end up working later than I intended to once or twice). The flexibility is amazing. I have time for personal projects (some of them coding related, but also music or home improvement or really anything I want), I have time to lift every day, I read more than almost anyone I know.

Having that extra day off for Whatever I Want is invaluable, and there's nothing that anyone can offer me that would make me give this up.

footy··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
I don't know you or your life.

> anyone fortunate enough to work there

strikes me as an insane thing to say based on the people I do know who have worked there. Horrible work life balance, mobbing, being hired to be fired by a manager who wanted to keep their team but had to stack ranking. Every one of them has described the culture as a cult, and reading comments like this one makes me think even moreso that they're right.

footy··on Attention is a luxury good
That's more than I pay to use the gym.
footy··on America's future could hinge on whether AI slightly disappoints
great plan. Definitely comes from someone who read my comment and is well informed about both the world and my personal situation!

> I moved all of my money out of the US the week following the election.

I did it a little more than a week following the election, but same. I even sold any ETFs with exposure to the US market I previously owned. People thought I was overreacting selling my VGRO, but the YTD returns for my ex-US portfolio are about 150% of what I could have expected with my old holdings and the peace of mind is priceless.

footy··on Understanding Cultural Differences: The Michigan Fish Test (2013)
not to open a can of worms that I'll immediately run away from because I have work to do, but that is exactly what privilege is, no? Women, LGBT people, visible minorities, disabled people, etc. can't just treat politics like a sport.
footy··on Understanding Cultural Differences: The Michigan Fish Test (2013)
> Even the briefest glimse of otherness, a win.

ah yes, understanding the people who want to kill people like me is a great win.

footy··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
I'm audhd in real life and I've been unable to get to day 3 in this game after 5 tries. I don't know what that says about me, the spectrum, this way, or the way I live my life, but I think I also don't like the premise much either.
footy··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
> If it's a spectrum, everyone is on it somewhere.

This is faulty logic. Just because it's a spectrum doesn't mean every single human is on the spectrum.

footy··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
I wonder how much of this is company- or team-dependent. I don't mind sprints, but I also choose what to put on them myself with very rare (like twice-yearly, tops) requests from my manager.

I don't have a PM.

footy··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
there's a difference between

> Preventing anyone ever possibly taking pictures where you could be in the background is not the answer.

and asking not to be recorded at a recurring event.

footy··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
right. My younger sister was stalked by a crazy ex for years.

According to some of the people here that would mean she had no right to participate in a regular activity.

footy··on What if I don't want videos of my hobby time available to the world?
The alternative is not uploading video of people doing a hobby.

I don't think your situations are the same as someone appearing on some youtube channel without their consent every single week unless they opt out of participating at all.

footy··on If you are reading this obituary, it looks like I'm dead
I think this is true when someone dies young or unexpectedly. After a long illness though, the family has likely already done a lot of grieving, and may even be feeling something more like relief than grief.

I know my dad felt that when his father passed. I did too, but not as much as he did, because my dad was taking his dad to doctor's appointments and caring for him after surgery and generally seeing him in very vulnerable circumstances.

I just don't at all think that this is equivalent to not acknowledging that someone is dying.

footy··on [dead]
Well yeah. The only way anyone would think otherwise would be if they weren't paying attention.
footy··on I Don't Want to Code with LLM's
I can imagine doing it and I have in fact used it to automate things like tests. This usually leads to me having to rewrite the tests and spending more time on them than I otherwise would have. Or delete tests that test trivial functionality, or add tests for x even when I specifically mentioned it in my prompt.

Being able to imagine something doesn't mean I have to like it.

footy··on I Don't Want to Code with LLM's
> This took about 2 minutes of research to support the conclusions I know to be true

This is a terrible way to do research!

footy··on I Don't Want to Code with LLM's
