footy··on Show HN: Paintracker.ca, a PWA pain tracker that keeps data on device by default
I'd think local contacts make sense. My instinct is also to say people should be able to add personal contacts they'd want to connect with in times of crisis (because when you're IN crisis you can't think of this, but when you aren't maybe you can) though of course I can see how that could make SOME people feel worse depending on wording.
footy··on Giving university exams in the age of chatbots
This is what my differential equations exams were like almost 20 years ago. Honestly, as a student I considered them brutal (10 questions, no partial credit available at all) even though I'd always been good at math. I scraped by but I think something like 30% of students had to retake the class.

Now that I haven't been a student in a long time and (maybe crucially?) that I am friends with professors and in a relationship with one, I get it. I don't think it would be appropriate for a higher level course, but for a weed-out class where there's one Prof and maybe 2 TAs for every 80-100 students it makes sense.

footy··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
I don't understand why you think I disagree with that.

I read the blog post linked at the top of your app and I just wanted to say I love your approach to privacy.

I'm lucky enough to not be a good test user for this, but keep going. The crisis button seems like a great idea to me.

footy··on Our approach to advertising
I think we all knew this was coming but I thought they'd wait a few more months.
footy··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
The US is currently threatening multiple of its NATO partners and serious people don't expect NATO to be around by the end of 2028. I am a less serious person I guess, because I expect it to break up within a year.

I'm glad you have so many cool 80 year old anecdotes to tell yourself, but things change.

footy··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
Ah yes, trucks with empty beds are clearly being used for construction. Not like pavement princesses are a thing.
footy··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
Yeah, that's why we're also leaning into our relationship with Europe. We were fooled by Americans but we clearly do not in fact share values, and they're the aggressor we need to fight off here.

As a Torontonian that last part is honestly what I'm most excited about. Massive American cars simply do not belong in most of our streets in this city, and if this starts the long process of getting them out that's going to be amazing. I've seen Cybertrucks zooming down streets that are about a Cybertruck and a half wide and it's an untenable situation.
footy··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
neither does America, and they're much closer and dangerous to us at this time.

> Why are we all fighting one another?

well, the president of the united states of america and the human slimeball he sent as an ambassador to Canada have been threatening our sovereignty for a year. Hope this helps.

Good. Carney also remarked our relationship with China is now more predictable with our relationship with the states (wild shade coming from him) just to really make it clear to certain parties why this is happening.

Cheaper car options in this country will be nice, and I say this as a certified car hater who's yet to own one despite pushing 40.

footy··on Launch HN: Indy (YC S21) – A support app designed for ADHD brains
I'm AuDHD and I think the marked for products to help with ADHD that do not actually work for anyone except for the person who came up with them is absolutely saturated. I think what I've come to realize is that the process of building a system is at least as important as the system itself. This means nothing designed by someone who is not me will really work for me, and that's that. I suppose a lot of money can be made off of people who have not yet realized this.

I also have to say something about the "for those who feel stuck... indy will be your compass" reads incredibly fucking dystopian to me.

footy··on Ask HN: AI agents solve all your problems or do you still ask humans for help?
I would rather talk to a human than an LLM about anything
footy··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
Yeah, my point is that 13 years (or frankly, 23) hardly counts as "a long time". That's less than 10% of the history of the United States! ICE is less old than The Matrix or the iPod or the complete decoding of the human genome.
footy··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
Same. I was actually disappointed to find out my "excluding US" fund had 0.93% exposure to the US. I want it to nil.
footy··on Zuck#: A programming language for connecting the world. And harvesting it

footy··on Ask HN: What did you find out or explore today?
Atmospheric CO2 is currently around 430 ppm. It's minimally variable based on seasonality, think a 15 ppm difference between the lowest and highest points.

It's been a long time since University for me but the standard measurement location is the Mauna (sp?) Loa Observatory in Hawaii, if I recall correctly due to it being the longest-running continuous measurement site.

footy··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
ICE has only existed since 2003 which I'd argue is not "before Trump" and regardless is not a long time.
footy··on The unbearable frustration of figuring out APIs
right but not all things are done for "market value" reasons, and that's kind of my point. If you don't find this stuff interesting, what's the point of building your career in the space?
footy··on The unbearable frustration of figuring out APIs
I don't understand why people who think like this get (or want to get) jobs as software developers

It's clearly not enjoyable for them so why doesn't the author pivot to something else and stop doing things they hate? It's weird

footy··on ICE's Tool to Monitor Phones in Neighborhoods
> where is the carefully nuance bio of Good?

I don't know, I don't think it's normally assumed that when someone dies (or more to the point is murdered) in a very public way we all immediately deserve to know every thing about them.

I don't know what you're talking about really. What I mean to say is the rest of this comment is incoherent to me.

footy··on ICE's Tool to Monitor Phones in Neighborhoods
most people are more than one thing.
footy··on Self hosting my media library with Jellyfin and Wireguard on Hetzner
I self-host on Jellyfin with Tailscale from my home server and it's been a great experience. It's fun and intentional.

I left Spotify during one of the many scandals they've had but I think this was in 2019ish based on where I was living and I just can't remember what it was. Possibly not paying the artists enough? This was pre-Rogan. Can't say their actions over the last few years have made me regret the decision.

I ran Navidrome and then Jellyfin alongside TIDAL and then Apple Music for a while, but the UX is just so much better with my own stuff and finding things to add is fun. I wish I'd spent all the money I spent on music streaming services over the past 15 years on buying music instead. Vinyl is more expensive now (I buy it anyway), but used CDs are dirt cheap and ripping them is fun.

footy··on X blames users for Grok-generated CSAM; no fixes announced
yes. It's obscene that they exist.
footy··on Kids Rarely Read Whole Books Anymore. Even in English Class
interesting. Assuming you're talking about high school I had a totally different experience, we were assigned maybe 6 books/semester for the year I spent in mainstream classes (and about double that when I did the IB program but I expected that to be uncommon)
footy··on Why are 38 percent of Stanford students saying they're disabled?
My company is about 100 people. I regularly interact with maybe 12. I'm AuDHD and so are at least 5 others---4 that I have regular interaction with and have told me, and one who I do not have regular interaction with but told me anyway. There are also at least 3 pure ADHD people.
footy··on Instagram chief orders staff back to the office five days a week in 2026
The inverse of the Gini coefficient is a good measure.
footy··on Instagram chief orders staff back to the office five days a week in 2026
how are they better? we're talking about them being forced to go into the office and despite having money having no power. The very thing that this thread was about is what is worse about their lives.

I don't know that a massive house is enough to make up for it.

footy··on Instagram chief orders staff back to the office five days a week in 2026
this is such a weird response to me. Those American Meta employees may have more money, but it's not enough money to stop working and their lives are objectively worse. What's the point of money then?
