foobar_______··on Meta AI: "The Future of AI Is Open Source and Decentralized"
It has been clear from the beginning that Meta's supposed desire for an open source AI, is just a coping mechanism for the fact that got beat out of the gate. This is an attempt to commoditize AI and reduce OpenAI/Google/Whoever's advantage. It is effective, not doubt, but all this wankery about how noble they are for creating an open-source AI future is just bullshit.
foobar_______··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
Exactly. I barely know who this actress is. To me, it sounds like the tens of thousands of other white american voices. How is the remotely too similar?
foobar_______··on GPT-4o
So much negativity. Is it perfect? No. Is there room for improvement? Definitely. I don't know how you can get so fucking jaded that a demo like this doesn't at least make you a little bit excited or happy or feel awestruck at what humans have been able to accomplish?
foobar_______··on Apple apologizes for iPad 'Crush' ad that 'missed the mark'
You help me feel sane. People, it is a commercial. Nothing more. Don't get your panties in a bundle. If you don't like it, change the channel, don't buy their product, go outside on a hike. The things people get upset about today is fascinating. GO OUTSIDE
foobar_______··on Meta does everything OpenAI should be
This is clear as day. If they got an early lead to the LLM/AI space like OpenAI did with ChatGPT, then things would be very different. Attributing the open source to "good will" and Meta being righteous seems like some mis-founded 16 year old's overly simplistic ideal of the world. Meta is a business. Period.
foobar_______··on Claude 3 beats GPT-4 on Aider's code editing benchmark
I agree with your analogy. Also, there is a quite a bit of "standing on the shoulders of giants" kind of thing going on. Every company's latest release will/should be a bit better than the models released before it. AI enthusiasts are getting a bit annoying - "we got a new leader boys!!!!*!" for each new model released.
foobar_______··on The Obscene Energy Demands of A.I
Yeah if I had to stack rank 'obscene' energy consumption technologies, Bitcoin would be number 1 and AI would be pretty low on the list.
foobar_______··on Sora: Creating video from text
Feels like another pivotal moment in AI. Feel like I’m watching history live. I think I need to go lay down.
foobar_______··on Gemini AI
Agreed. The whole things reeks of being desperate. Half the video is jerking themselves off that they've done AI longer than anyone and they "release" (not actually available in most countries) a model that is only marginally better than the current GPT4 in cherry-picked metrics after nearly a year of lead-time?!?!

That's your response? Ouch.

foobar_______··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
Yeah seems pretty straight forward to me. Guy has been getting GOOG RSUs for 15 years straight and is now a multi-millionaire. Why would he rock his own boat? It is much easier to ignore any wrongdoing of the hand that feeds.
foobar_______··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
Microsoft under Satya has really stepped up. Gaming is now larger than TV and Movies in terms of revenue. I know their cloud rollout didn't work as anticipated, but if they get this acquisition right they will have a money printer for the next decade.
foobar_______··on 80% of bosses say they regret earlier return-to-office plans
No, I'm sorry that's just not possible. I think they've done an excellent job tricking you and others into their ever present productivity.
foobar_______··on LK-99 is an online sensation but replication efforts fall short
Thank you for articulating this well. It really is such an odd world we live in nowadays.
foobar_______··on Modern work requires attention – constant alerts steal it
I feel like I could have written this comment verbatim. Glad I'm not alone in the world. Thanks for sharing.
foobar_______··on Facebook has not been doing enough to comply with a 2020 privacy order: FTC
For sure. I sincerely hope we look back in 5-15 years (sooner the better) and are aghast at letting children and teens having unrestricted total access to social media. Hell, even adults I hope it is frowned upon - at least social media in its current state. It feels like it will be looking back at smoking and being like what the hell "you just LET people receive push notifications from the worlds largest companies who have teams of PhD data scientists optimizing the content delivery tho maximize your engagement (ie addiction) !?!? Fucking irresponsible!"
foobar_______··on The money spent on lotteries doesn’t go to the park
Ya it is not "official" advertising I guess, but Instagram put the nail in the coffin for so many outdoor locations
foobar_______··on The money spent on lotteries doesn’t go to the park
Reservations only became required for Old Rag somewhat recently. I think this is a covid thing. I'm really torn, I want people to be happy and healthy outside but covid and social media has made doing this a mad house. Regulating day tickets is a necessity at most places nowadays
foobar_______··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
Thanks for saying this. Can people chill the fuck out and appreciate the world around them anymore? This was the largest rocket launch _ever_ from an American _private_ company using a novel launch configuration in the first fully integrated test _ever_ and people are complaining !?!?!?

This makes me proud to be American, proud to be an engineer, and just stoked to be human. Let's show some humility and graciousness, people!

foobar_______··on Hubble sees possible runaway black hole creating a trail of stars
It brings me sanity to hear others say this. I thought the story was convoluted and characters uninteresting.
foobar_______··on AI won't steal your job, people leveraging AI will
Part of me can definitely sympathize with this feeling. Part of me thinks "lol our job is to provide business value using the tool that is software. Not 'getting enjoyment' out of manually twiddling bits." This is just a new layer of abstraction - I'm sure all the old school computer engineers felt slighted when the new software guys didnt even have to know how to solder flipflops and transitors together.
foobar_______··on ChatGPT sends shockwaves across college campuses
Great response. You sound like a wonderful teacher. Thank you
foobar_______··on Amazon pauses construction on second HQ in Virginia amid job cuts
Right - part of their leadership wants to to RTO now! The other part says "wait! offices are too expensive and even H2 isn't safe. Wacky world we're in.
foobar_______··on I'm glad I lack passion to be a programmer
Refreshing to hear opinions like this on HN. I feel similarly but often times feel alone with that feeling.
