foobar2020··on Wait ages for a bus and then two come along at once
There are different kinds of randomness. The exponential distribution of the waiting time is a nice, mathematically pleasing result. Although not a very nice one to the commuter.
foobar2020··on DHS Extends Eligibility for Employment to Certain H-4 Dependent Spouses
The fact that H1B spouses cannot be legally employed is just stupid.

The US needs to get its immigration together. Fix the law, decrease or increase the cap, stop the H1B program - but please be reasonable. Quality immigrants are more likely to have quality spouses. On the other hand, a mediocre programmer with his housewife will happily jump on the H1B train even if it means she will be unemployed, because that is already a huge quality of life boost for both them.

I would never take the H1B route if I were married, unless I was sure that my wife is OK with that. And I would have to be really, really sure - because that's locking into a situation for years.

You should read about H1B transfers.
foobar2020··on Japan Has More Car Chargers Than Gas Stations
The number you propose - the number of charge stations divided by about 15 is indeed important - but only if one also takes into consideration the fraction of cars that are electric, versus those that use gasoline/diesel. To give an example: suppose that in some Kyoto district there are only 300 electric cars, versus around 5000 fuel-powered ones. Having roughly as many charge stations as there are gas stations wouldn't be an issue there.

Also, once you have an operational charge point you can easily go parallel with stations, just like with gas pumps.

foobar2020··on One-electron universe
Well I suppose there is a way to disprove this: create an electron-positron pair, then annihilate the pair. This way we would get a closed loop, which would obviously not be a part of a giant knot spanning through the universe.

Relax, it's probably God's favourite way of keeping an eye on his universe.
foobar2020··on UK to allow babies from three people
The X chromosome codes quite a few crucial proteins [0], such as certain clotting factors (that's why women rarely get haemophilia), or retinal proteins (that's why women see more colors, and rarely get daltonism). It is pretty impossible for a fetus to develop with a YY genotype.

I believe that the free market decides what kind of profit sharing is fair.

You are always welcome to raise money for poor people, as well as help them in any other way. Even Bill Gates does that, with quite a success.

foobar2020··on SWEATSHOP – I can´t take any more
You need to produce wealth before you consume wealth, at least on the scale of a country.

Only after there is enough wealth available (in form of schools, hospitals, infrastructure, social security system, businesses, know-how, reliable supply chains, etc.) you can jump the poverty barrier by borrowing wealth, through the credit money-creation system. But the prerequisite is a healthy economy.

That is right, and what is the alternative? Suppose China had never opened their borders to foreign investments. What would these people do? I think I know the answer, just look at the following life expectancy graph:

I really don't understand this problem. Why does everybody think people in Asia are forced to do this kind of work? These people would be incredibly poor if not for western companies. Actually most of them would die being children as a result of their poverty: malnutrition, accidents, preventable diseases such as polio or measles.

Go now and check what was China's annual GDP per capita in Mao Zedong times. Just see it. Apparently a lot of people need this kind of basic history education.

foobar2020··on Why You Should Tell Your Children How Much You Make
I actually envy you guys. I come from an European Christian family, and it was only my father that occasionally engaged in discussions regarding wealth, earnings, business. It was not a popular thing to do where I grew up. Although I firmly believe this is the right thing to do, properly executed it brings family together and gives support to everyone's plans.
