fold_left··on Ask HN: What is the biggest bullshit you have encountered at your workplace?
Would it be unreasonable to consider the owner to be a hypocrite?
fold_left··on Ask HN: What is the biggest bullshit you have encountered at your workplace?
A product owner that asked that the content of our poker site be impossible to copy, incase someone should try to copy it.

We explained that this wasn't a thing - even newspapers, whose product is the written word, publish each day's paper online and don't apply these measures. Reluctantly they withdrew the request but made it clear they didn't agree.

Later, that same product owner was asked to organise for content to be written for the customer help documentation. We received it in Microsoft word format and on closer inspection we could see that the content had been copied and pasted from a competitor's site.

fold_left··on Broadband Communism: Jeremy Corbyn gets serious about free internet
> technology companies should be scared.

Why?

> This proposal means billions of Pounds wasted on killing the industry

Wasted or invested?

> and billions more lost as a result.

Why? By who? To who?

> And then stagnation and a slow decay...

Where? Due to what?

fold_left··on Study of “moral grandstanding” helps explain why social media is so toxic
A Political Commentator here in Britain refers to this from time to time as the "Footballification" of Politics.

fold_left··on Microsoft Comic Chat
There's an interesting video here with David (DJ) Kurlander, the creator of Microsoft comic chat https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19078993
fold_left··on JavaScript: The Modern Parts
> From what I've heard WASM isn't a viable alternative in the first place. It's good for compute-heavy tasks, but the overhead involved in going from browser to native to browser is too much to make WASM an alternative to what JavaScript is usually used for -- rendering interfaces and making pages interactive.

I don't think that's the case anymore: https://dassur.ma/things/is-postmessage-slow/

fold_left··on Rust Language Cheat Sheet
> I know everyone says how good Rust's documentation is but I tried learning Rust with The Rust Book and found it frustrating: too long and wordy on the easy bits and without useful insight on the hard bits. I ended up buying Programming Rust by Jim Blandy [0] on a recommendation from HN comments and found it must easier to learn from. I'm already familiar with several other languages, which that book assumes, so your milage may vary.

Thanks for tip, the Rust Book is working well for me so far but it's good to know of other good options.

fold_left··on Rust Language Cheat Sheet
Ralf Biedert, thanks so much for this! I've been learning Rust via the Rust Book for the past few months and this will help so, so much - fantastic work.
fold_left··on Getting Started with Rust: Working with Files and Doing File I/O
Thanks for sharing. This is perfect timing for me as, having written a lot of Node.js CLIs over the years, I've been trying to learn Rust by rewriting one of them. This is helpful to check my progress against and tweak accordingly.

fold_left··on What did Google+ get right?
An option that can achieve something like circles on Twitter is to not follow any accounts but instead assign them to Twitter's "lists". You can create lists for work, hobbies etc and view whichever one you're interested in at a given time.
fold_left··on YC's latest moonshot bet is a startup building a $380K “flying motorcycle”
Supposing that they succeed, become more affordable, and most people commute to work with them - would pollution and air quality levels be better or worse?
fold_left··on Ask HN: Anyone Using Elm in Production?
FYI I think you have a problem, at least in latest Firefox for Mac https://imgur.com/Sd9960X. Those messages are being logged multiple times a second.
fold_left··on Upvote for HN Darkmode?
Thanks for this, I was using Stylus before and putting up with various bits of broken display but this has been perfect on every site I regularly use.
fold_left··on Upvote for HN Darkmode?
Materialistic is a brilliant HN Reader and has a dark mode, maybe some of you will like it too (I have no connection with the creator, just a user that recommends it) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.github.hidr...

Classes are not being removed, you can continue to use them or not according to your taste.

fold_left··on What the Flow team has been up to
Yeah that's all I was saying. They're just busy but I believe they'll get there.
fold_left··on What the Flow team has been up to
That's your prediction about what will happen in the future.

Leaving the Goalposts were they were, it holds that this did not happen in the article we're discussing.

fold_left··on What the Flow team has been up to
It's more telling and announcing _to_ outside contributors, rather than asking, listening, discussing, and including them - two way communication This is think was the main complaint, so I was surprised to see it left unmentioned.
fold_left··on What the Flow team has been up to
No word on if or how they plan to improve how they communicate with open source contributors that I could notice, but they are clearly very busy.
fold_left··on Yarn's Future – v2 and beyond
That's also true. TS has more to do to improve working with functional JS.
fold_left··on Yarn's Future – v2 and beyond
You can continue to code the way you've been enjoying, just with the option to type your inputs and outputs if you choose to. Writing classical OOP isn't imposed on you by TypeScript, nor do you miss out on anything by not writing classical OOP.
fold_left··on Every new web app at PayPal starts with TypeScript
Good for you for recognising this though, it's important to be able to have reasonable discussions, to learn and grow.
fold_left··on RE:DOM – Tiny turboboosted JavaScript library for creating user interfaces
> I did get a quick chuckle from the term "close to the metal" being used to describe a Javascript browser library.

This and "blazing fast" make me cringe every time.

fold_left··on Commenting without the comments
This is evil, I love it
fold_left··on The Baseline Costs of JavaScript Frameworks
I don't know but with a service worker you could possibly reduce that 0.5 in your MPA further by caching likely next pages ahead of time.
fold_left··on Amazon FSx for Lustre
finally, something that can handle node_modules! :)

Damn, Svelte is not on there. I'd be curious what the author thinks to it as an approach https://svelte.technology/
fold_left··on Web.dev by Google
> Not really. Would you take webdev advice from a company where their own apps are memory hog/leaking garbage (Gmail)? At some point you need to call a square a square.

Wait, was web.dev built by the Gmail team? I always assumed Google was bigger and more complex than that?
