fokinsean··on Why I don't like Tailwind CSS
> With tailwind and css-in-js, changes to style require changes to js/html and therefore require an entire page reload

ah!! I was wondering why HMR wasn't working like I remembered the first time I used React. I think the first time I picked up React I used plain CSS, and the CSS would change on the page without reloading. Now I'm using tailwind and material-ui and thought HMR was just busted.

I like tailwind but it doesn't play well with material-ui. Material components always take precedence which is super annoying. I might just end up canning tailwind.

Could you elaborate on this one? I've only used C in college and don't know why this is bad.

This sounds like a really cool stack. I'm testing the waters with FastAPI and SQLAlchemy right now, but SQLAlchmey feels like it just gets in the way.

Do you have an example project which uses all of these I could look at?

fokinsean··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building projects?
Have you done it?

Elixir has interested me but I'm not sure if I want to learn Erlang.

Does anybody have recommendations on how to go from "comfortable" to "expert"?

I've been using vim as my daily driver via the intellij plugin for a few years. I mostly just navigate and never do anything complicated, it gets the job done.

For example I mostly use w, d, o, hjkl, y, p, w, b, t and recently discovered the `c+i` combo which is awesome.

But I feel like there's still a side of vim I haven't conquered.

Any tips?

> The act of simply showing up, no matter how you feel or what else you need to do, is hugely powerful. Anthony Trollope was a prolific English novelist who published 47 novels while maintaining a “regular” full-time job. He did this by committing to write 250 words every 15 minutes every single day. He did that every day, without fail, and achieved amazing results.

How the hell does one write 250 words every 15 mins every day while having a job.

I'm getting a flashback from Sproutcore JS statecharts, wish I could say they were good times but I'm so glad I'm not developing with them anymore.

> A high property tax keeps the price of housing down

Have you seen Austin prices recently, it's getting pretty hectic in "core" Austin.

> promotes a general attitude of anti-NIMBYism

This isn't entirely true. In the recent election there was a public transit bill in Austin which would raise prop taxes by 4% I think. Even though it passed there was a hefty amount of opposition to supporting it, and generally anything that deals with raising prop taxes.

Also in my local neighborhood (north central austin) there is plenty of nimbyism regarding planned multifamily construction.

fokinsean··on Ask HN: Where are the Beautiful clean HTML/CSS templates?
I'm in this boat. I can structure and do layouty things, I just don't have a taste for design. This is where component libraries help out a lot.

fokinsean··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
I was referring to physical space. I work on a macbook, game on windows, but I'm still sitting in the same chair for either task :)
fokinsean··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
This is my hardest thing to do. My gaming setup is the same as my work desk. This usually results in me gaming less during the week, but some days I have literally spent 12+ hours at my desk.
fokinsean··on Canon's cloud platform has lost users' files and can't restore them
I dread the day I decide to go through all my photos and organize them. It's one reason why I'm so reluctant to move off of google photos, it's sooo easy to find stuff and it groups photos together nicely.

But I really want to move my photos off of google.

Synology just opened a US datacenter for their C2 backup service, it's quite easy to use and IMO better than hosting on Google.

fokinsean··on Siberian heatwave of 2020 almost impossible without climate change
I saw this theory floating around. Haven't done much research but it sounds "plausible". Could Siberia warming be due to the ocean around it heating? The magnetic poles have been moving increasingly faster towards Siberia in the last few years. These poles move because of underground streams of the molten core deep below. Could these new flows potentially heat the earth's surface and the ocean above?
