fogetti··on Why not use GraphQL?
I think you are confused about what the parent comment said. The point is that the n+1 problem is usually solved on the database level in case of REST and the endpoint is also changing in tandem to reflect the DB changes. There is no client and server fan-out as you describe.

And the second thing is that solving something by slapping an unknown library into the stack instead of using the DB tools which are readily available out of the box doesn't make much sense IMO.

fogetti··on Suppression is a bigger scandal than the actual story
Doh. By the same logic China (or other oppressors) is not censoring anything because people can travel to Vietnam (or Japan for that matter) and they can tell anyone what they want.
fogetti··on GitHub Certifications (Beta)
We have AWS and Google cloud certifications though. I don't find those any less "enterprisy" than Microsoft to be honest. And they definitely remind me of the Java certificates of the 90s.

Thank you for sharing. I wish you great success in the future too!
fogetti··on What is expected of a engineering manager?
Something which bothers me deeply is the disconnection between the fetishism of management which is the most apparent on this website and the endless misery caused by the outcomes of 20th and 21st century corporate culture.

In most western developed countries (and most recently developing countries too) depression and anxiety is shooting off the roof in every possible survey and study (yes, that can be attributed to social media and others too). According to OECD data the 25% of the working age population of those countries struggle with mental health problems. That's about 166 million people.

If everyone believes that good management is possible and just the matter of willpower, while the numbers all point towards the opposite direction then we're doomed. Too many people are indoctrinated.

Yup it is ;)
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
That's not a threat. You basically say that every negative comment written by people who has no connection whatsoever with Glassdoir is a purposeful threat by Glassdoor. How does that make any sense to you?
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
People here for some reason think that throwing around legal terms based on gut feelings is somehow the start of civil discussion. And I tend to correct those people. That's all. Extortion is a legal term and it's pretty well defined compared to other crimes. And this is not extortion. I can recommend all commenters who downvoted to go and denounce the offence of extortion and see for themselves what happens. I for one would love to see it to have a good laugh :D
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
Nope
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
Calling something extortion which is a legal term and punishable by federal law is different from accusing them undermining integrity of the service. And yeah, it's scummy.
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
Duress? LOL. What duress? If they pay, the situation gets better. If they don't pay the situation remains the same. Your claim is ridiculous. In any case the situation never gets worse so there is no duress.
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
Yes. You are right. That is not extortion.
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
It seems to me that the bad reviews were published on the site regardless of their offer. So I can't see how is this extortion.

Extortion would be along the lines of "we publish some made up bad reviews unless you pay".

fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
It's not the same at all. A better analogy would be that you call around the influential business partners of your references that you are concerned about, and offering those business partners some money to completely disregard what those references reported about you.
fogetti··on A warning about Glassdoor
Wow. How can someone be so naive as the Reddit poster? It has been like this forever. Glassdoor in the US, Kununu in Germany, Vorkers in Japan are all company propaganda companies.

Also it's just my pet peeve but I hate it when people call this bullshit public relations. This is simply corporate brainwashing and propaganda and makes one wonder when did it become OK to use such tools as purposeful deceit (something that countries used in order to indoctrinate their population) in order to gain profit?

fogetti··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
This doesn't make any sense. Most IPv4 addresses change every day if not multiple times during the day. I guess you can only filter the dumbest of the dumbest this way. And if someone has the wit to open an incognito window it doesn't take a genius to notice that he can only see the same day's comments.
fogetti··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
There is a problem though. In a physical setting you cannot do shadow banning. Now in the past 100% of public discussion happened in public spaces, but let's say that now this happens in 50% of the cases online. Let's also say that this grows considerably to something like 75%. The issue is that public discussion becomes increasingly easy to be censored.
fogetti··on I found black-hat content marketers: sockpuppet bloggers, fake Reddit/HN accts
I wonder how can shadowban work at all to begin with. It only takes 10 seconds to open a public thread in an incognito window and confirm if voting, commenting, etc indeed happened as the commenter intended or was it only happening in a private echo chamber.
fogetti··on Amazon Price-Tracker with Alerts
They also support the Japanese marketplace
fogetti··on Amazon Price-Tracker with Alerts
I see. Thank you. It's interesting because I use keepa.com for the very same reason and it works fine in Japan
fogetti··on Amazon Price-Tracker with Alerts
Could you maybe shed some light why was Japan dropped from the supported country list?

I hope that's sarcasm. Hard to tell

fogetti··on Social Cooling (2017)
I am surprised that noone mentions the Solid project in the context of discussing privacy

fogetti··on Social Cooling (2017)
The idea has only accidental correlation with social media. You are pretty much wrong focusing your thinking on social media only.
fogetti··on How to Get Promoted
Now that's a classic! I mean the way you argue, not the quote. Very nice, very classic moral relativism and postmodernism. People should never trust themselves and their understanding of the world.
fogetti··on Social-media platforms are destroying evidence of war crimes
Good. I mean we need more such articles, so that just like the BBC could shame the Cameroonian government into action, we can shame tech companies into action too.
fogetti··on Apple blocks Facebook update that called out 30-percent App Store ‘tax’
> the only way someone could believe you're wrong is if they're misunderstanding your position

Yes, that's how it is. And you are the proof of it.

fogetti··on Apple blocks Facebook update that called out 30-percent App Store ‘tax’
Is there something which I need to explain better to you to understand what I am saying? I am really puzzled by your thinking TBH.

This is not a binary thing. It's not like you either have the information or not. It's more like you either have little or no information, satisfying level of information or it can even be an overwhelmingly detailed amount of information. Depending on how much and of what kind of quality of info you have, you can have varying level of leverage. So in effect and by definition that info is not irrelevant.
