fmx··on Raganwald's "How to Do What You Love" is free today
It's great that Leanpub makes it so easy to register, but it would be even better if you didn't have to. I don't want to provide my email address to download a file. I used a disposable one and I'm sure some others did, too. That's just going to add (a tiny bit of) work for the Leanpub email server and make their stats look a little better than they really are.

Also, the site creating a "profile" for me when all I did was download a book makes me feel "sucked in" a little. I know, rationally, that there's really no downside to it for me, but I still can't shake the feeling that this is more than I agreed to.

fmx··on Why I Don't Do Unpaid Overtime and Neither Should You
The problem with that is measuring the amount of value you generate. For some jobs that's easy, like sales - and those jobs typically do pay based on the value generated (ie. commission), at least in part. But for software development and other knowledge worker jobs it's just about impossible.
fmx··on I Was a Warehouse Wage Slave: Inside the online-shopping shipping machine
I was going to upvote you for the quote, but then I got to "her description of this job doesn't sound all that bad"... It sounds pretty bad to me, at least for a first-world country.
fmx··on Judge: Fifth Amendment doesn't protect encrypted hard drives
Even then, there would be nothing stopping an adversary from making a bit-for-bit copy of the data and attempting to decrypt the (writable) copy.
fmx··on Turning off Google search results indirection
Really? In my experience the results are far less relevant. I really tried to use DuckDuckGo, because of the privacy advantages - even set it as my default search engine - but the results just aren't as good. It's also slower - noticeably slower. I very much hope they can improve to the point where they're on par with Google in terms of quality and speed, but they're not there yet.
fmx··on Turning off Google search results indirection
I tried the Chrome extension and it seems to have no effect for me - the URL is the same.
fmx··on Famous Last Words by Bosses I've Had
Agreed. Most companies realise the disruption caused to a project when key staff leave and paying an extra 10K, 20K or even 60K passes a simple cost-benefit analysis - but only during that project.

Personal experience: I was one of about 5-6 people who actually knew what they were doing on a 50 person, 3 year project at a large company when I got a much better offer from a much better company. I called the HR manager in good faith to see if they would match it, but he didn't want a word of it (nearly hung up on me, in fact). That was until he was told by my boss that I'm needed on a critical project. Not only did he call me back and talk to me, the CTO of the company (who never spoke to me before) spent an entire hour with me, ignoring his constantly beeping phone, convincing me to stay. As flattering as that was, I knew by then that they only did this because of the critical project and took that into account in making my decision.

I still decided to quit. The "critical project" was cancelled two weeks later (for unrelated reasons).

fmx··on Joel Spolsky On Tech Hiring: Beware the Exploding Offer
A company is made up of people. If you treat a company unethically the consequences are suffered by people, not by some imaginary entity that only exists on paper. The only difference is that you may not always know who they are.

Yes, companies and salespeople can lie legally - but not ethically, and that's what we're talking about here.

fmx··on Speed-of-light experiments yield baffling result at LHC
The speed they got in this experiment was faster than light would travel in a vacuum, according to the abstract.
fmx··on TrueCrypt User Held in Contempt of Court
It's definitely not in Australia - and I'd be surprised if that defence worked anywhere else, either.

The law here says that you must assist the police to access data if ordered by a magistrate. The magistrate must be satisfied that you can provide that assistance, but he doesn't ask you before issuing the order - he makes the decision based on what the police tell him. Once that order is issued you commit an offence if you don't comply with it. Your reasons for not complying are irrelevant. (I'm not a laywer, etc...)

fmx··on TrueCrypt User Held in Contempt of Court
How could the court know what fact it would have supported?
fmx··on Ooops.
No entirely. DELETE will work with cascading foreign keys, while TRUNCATE will not, at least on SQL Server. Also, DELETE is logged and (I believe) TRUNCATE is not. Having said that, I agree that a WHERE clause should be required - you can always say "WHERE 1=1" or similar if you really mean to delete all rows.
fmx··on Ooops.
The designer of rm is the greater culprit here, not the author of that install script. A single mistyped character should not lead to such drastic consequences.

"Usability? What's that? I'm really smart, so I don't make mistakes. If lesser humans do - that's their problem". That seems to be the attitude of many Linux programs and rm is among the worst of them. No doubt I'll get downvoted for saying this, but I've rarely, if ever, heard of such things happening in Windows. (And people still manage to delete files in Windows without too much difficulty.)

fmx··on Unlocked iPhone 4 up for sale
When I read the title my initial thought was that "unlocked" was the official term for "jailbroken". It sounded too good to be true and, sure enough, it was.

The fact that the phone is not locked to any one network doesn't seem like such a big deal to me. I believe most telcos in Australia will unlock your phone for you for a fee.

fmx··on The Linux desktop experience is killing Linux on the desktop
"I just want to get some work done, I don’t want to waste my time debugging all kind of crap."

That's basically it. It's not the drivers, it's not the bugs - it's the culture. The culture of Linux seems to be that every user should be a programmer and should help debug the OS. If you are one, and want to help - great, go ahead! As for me, I have other things to do and I expect the OS, shell and file manager to Just Work.

fmx··on My Email Canary
I also use a separate email alias for each company I deal with. I run my own Postfix servers (primary + backup), but I've now created a web UI with a view to making this usable by others. The URL is in my profile (not sure if posting it here would be considered spam). It's still early days, but seems to work fine for my own emails. If you'd like to use it I'll be happy to create a (free) account for you.
fmx··on Linus Torvalds on the "security circus" (2008)
Agreed. His broader point about not "glorifying" security researchers is valid, but he goes way too far when he says security bugs aren't more important.

There is no point in telling him he's wrong, either. He'll just call you a "masturbating monkey".
