fmakunbound··on Using LSP in Emacs and Debian
> :hook ((python-mode go-mode) . lsp-deferred)

Heh that’s a neat use-package feature I’m about to rewrite my .emacs with.

fmakunbound··on Fedora 36: A brave new (DRM/KMS only) world
Does this mean less display flickering during Linux boot while the system tries to figure out what mode to use?
fmakunbound··on Textualize – A framework for building Text User Interface applications
Grumpy old-ish fart, here. These fancy, ricer terminal things, whether it be emojis in your $PS1, clueless reinventions of TurboVision, or OpenGL crunch effects when I press a key, but all ultimately emulating a teletypewriter machine from the 1940s are just extremely cringy to me. Emulating one on top of a browser stack probably takes the cake though.

We had document/text oriented interfaces in the 80s that were also graphical like in Genera, a lisp machine OS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genera_(operating_system) This should have been the direction we should have followed. Instead, Unix and X Window systems - the most expensive way to run a teletypewriter - some how won out in the economics of things.

I hope the current approach of fancy terminal apps is just a local minimum we can kick ourselves out of in he long term.

fmakunbound··on Ask HN: Should I get chickens?
Have had a bunch of hens for several years now. It’s great fun and they’re pretty interesting pets. Mine roam around the backyard during the day eating grubs and, well, the lawn. At night they wander back to the coop on their own and I close the door to protect them from raccoons. Each has their own personality. Make sure to get a feeder that doesn’t provide access to critters other than your hens, eg. Grandpa’s Feeders and you won’t have rat problems.

fmakunbound··on Solaris 11.4 free for non-production personal use
As I recall, it was a mess of XML files you edit and slow Java based tooling.
fmakunbound··on Real World Recommendation System
With all of this technology applied, I am still disappointed by Netflix's recommendations – to the point of just giving up and doing something else.
fmakunbound··on Atlassian products have been down for 4 days
But how will managers feel useful?
fmakunbound··on Reliably Send an HTTP Request as a User Leaves a Page
Can’t tell if that was sarcasm or not. I still have hardware from the DOS era. For example, Microsoft Works starts up almost instantly. That is definitely not the case with Office 365 in 2022. Latency is far lower back then too. I could go on and on.
fmakunbound··on Zas Editor
How do I extend it etc and what’s the extension language?
fmakunbound··on FAA, do your damn job
I'm in the same boat as the GP. Talked to a few AMEs about my options back in 2019. SI involves thousands of dollars per year and and only applies to a few relatively old SSRI drugs. Ideally they want you to discontinue your psychiatric drug treatment – great job, FAA.

There's also the BasicMed rules. You can fly with BasicMed instead of 3rd class, but you need to have had a 3rd class to get the BasicMed, so I suggested to the AME that I could drop the drugs for 2 months, get the 3rd class, and then immediately apply for the BasicMed and hop back on whatever I was taking in the first place. One guy refused to talk to me after that.

fmakunbound··on Pharo 10
There's a ton of practical Pharo books here https://books.pharo.org and Smalltalk books here http://stephane.ducasse.free.fr/FreeBooks.html
fmakunbound··on Pharo 10
> a copy of your code the environment does some extra epicycles to copy it outside

Iceberg https://github.com/pharo-vcs/iceberg is the Git/etc. integration built into Pharo and works extremely well. You don't need to "file out" code if that's what you meant.

fmakunbound··on We don’t use a staging environment
I’m working at megacorp at the moment as contractor. The local dev, cloud dev, cloud stage, cloud prod pipeline is truly glacial in velocity even with automation like Jenkins, kubernetes, etc. it takes weeks to move from dev complete to production. It’s a middle manager’s wet dream.

I used to wonder why isn’t megacorp being murdered by competitors delivering features faster, but actually, everyone is moving glacially for the same reason, so it doesn’t matter.

I’m kinda reminded by pg’s essay on which competitors to worry about. I might be a worried competitor if these guys are pulling off merging to master as production.

fmakunbound··on How it works: looking inside the unique AdGuard VPN protocol
My eyebrows raised at “proprietary vpn protocol”, but I’m too much of a normie to understand if it’s really just a novel combination of standard things.
fmakunbound··on Lawmakers Drink Raw Milk to Celebrate Legality, Become Immediately Sick (2016)
“tuberculosis, diphtheria, typhoid, Campylobacter, Listeria, Brucella, E. coli, Salmonella, and streptococcal infections” apparently.
fmakunbound··on I built a receipt printer for GitHub issues
I once tried a thermal paper print experiment for completed pomodoros to see if sense of accomplishment was improved with something physical.
fmakunbound··on Windows needs a change in priorities
What you’re seeing there in Windows is a two-dimensional, stylized representation of the bloody turf battles between business units within Microsoft. Most recently adtech has entered the battle and seem to be really killing it.
fmakunbound··on NYC allows citizens to report idling vehicles in exchange for a cut of the fines
Turning into a nation of snitches with this and the Texas bullshit law and California’s ironic equivalent.

fmakunbound··on Introduction to K-Means Clustering
It's been ages since I've used K-means, but I thought you had a lot of freedom in how you define your distance function.
fmakunbound··on Russia opens criminal investigation of Meta over death calls on Facebook
You don’t have to be on Facebook to live in a world affected by it unfortunately
fmakunbound··on Israel passes law denying naturalization to Palestinian spouses
How is it that you and user adielsa paste this same reply here multiple times?
fmakunbound··on Hilla: Modern web framework for Java
So many projects seem to explain themselves by throwing “modern” in there somewhere.
fmakunbound··on Deep learning is hitting a wall?
There was an interview with Marcus on Sean Carroll’s podcast show recently. He seems to be more of an advocate for a hybrid approach than a one or the other guy (symbolic or gradients). https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2022/02/14/184-...

Jesus Christ though, it is pretty embarrassing about the Nethack result.

fmakunbound··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
> use secret undocumented APIs where you need to copy your cookies out of the browser to get access to them

Yea, thank you modern front end developers. This is my favorite start for scraping as well.

fmakunbound··on My lizard brain is no match for infinite scroll
It’s a commercial thing. It’s called Pavlock.
fmakunbound··on My lizard brain is no match for infinite scroll
I’m using a shock bracelet when accessing time wasters like Reddit and HN during “thinking. hours.” I can access them anytime but it comes with pain.
fmakunbound··on SPAs Were a Mistake
Seaside on Squeak (now Pharo), is still my happy place for web application development.
fmakunbound··on Car dealerships don’t want cash, they want to give loans
The large Toyota dealership I was last at offered a simple interest loan. I thought this must have been an unfortunate misuse of the word “simple” in a loan context, but I pressed him further and he definitely meant “simple interest” as in the one high school maths teachers warn you against.

Of course I agreed and payed it off the same week, but these loans must be targeted toward the uneducated or poor.
