fmakunbound··on Lenovo ThinkPad X13s with Snapdragon ARM-CPUs Available
What is it with ThinkPads and screen brightness. It’s been abysmal for as long as I remember
fmakunbound··on I fucking hate Jira
Definitely this 100% I proposed for company game night: Predict where the Jira cursor goes next in response to right arrow. There’s so many possibilities: right left up down, teleports, disappears. My favorite is when the cursor splits into two at two different seemingly unrelated locations. Two cursors?? How do you even do that in a text area?
fmakunbound··on International Space Station captured travelling in front of sun
> Jamie Cooper stressed the importance of using a filter when photographing the Sun

Yep, good tip

fmakunbound··on The computers are fast, but you don't know it
I’m afraid we just “deploy more pods” these days
fmakunbound··on Sick and struggling to pay, 100M people in the U.S. live with medical debt
Oh boy, think you might be living in a bubble.
fmakunbound··on We will never have enough software developers (2020)
An ass-clown engineering director/manager I had, proudly shared a chart – I guess it was from something related to the post - that at the current rate, everyone in the US will need to be a SWE at Amazon for it to continue to grow. I can't tell if that case is true or not and I don't remember the time frame, but I have a suspicion SWEs will instead have to work smarter with better tools and languages that effort "multipliers". x10 languages, and tools perhaps.
fmakunbound··on We will never have enough software developers (2020)
> We can’t even push to a git repo unless it has a linked work item/story/task/bug

Exactly the same where I work. The pace of getting things done is absolutely glacial compared to what you know you could achieve if you had any agency. I think the only reason this organization I'm temporarily a part of can even compete is that all its competitors must be equally inefficient.

fmakunbound··on The US Navy F-14 Tomcat aircrew that inspired the Top Gun Movie
Basically all our taxes go to military. The military can’t even say no, we’ve got everything we need to Congress, so sure why not.
fmakunbound··on Lilium achieves first main wing transition for all-electric aircraft [video]
Recently read unleaded aviation fuel seems to be an insurmountable problem for the FAA. Will it be that hard with electric aircraft or is it further along?
fmakunbound··on Data Race Patterns in Go
> contains approximately 2,100 unique Go services (and growing)

How is that possible and what do they do???

fmakunbound··on The collapse of complex software
Works for email, phone numbers and addresses, too.
fmakunbound··on The End of Localhost
Man that is really sad, but I suspect these code in the cloud schemes will be targeted toward hordes of developers with such a superficial grasp on what’s happening.
fmakunbound··on What is a programmable programming language? (2019)
> Paralinguistic symbols

What’s that? I googled and am still confuzled.

fmakunbound··on Norway to track all supermarket purchases?
Heh I’ve been vegan for ages, just watched it. Great reminder.
fmakunbound··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
Christ what is PI planning? We're doing something "OKR" meeting related which I have neither the interest nor time to look up the un-abbreviation. Luckily one can Zoom with sound and video off at least...
fmakunbound··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
I complete a ticket, now I've got to spend a day writing another ticket about how it's supposed to be deployed so any regular jack off can deploy it. Then I've got to find a "champion" (aka. a middle manager) to "champion" the ticket I wrote about the ticket. Then I have to notify several Slack channels about it, wait a bit in case someone makes a stink, then finally press "deploy" in Jenkins.

It's a Modern Stack™ – cookie cutter, untestable locally, horde of Golang services on Kubernetes pulling and pushing to various cloud services. Of course, it's ad-tech and for a company that seems to be the media equivalent of a Jerry Springer show.

fmakunbound··on Goodbye PNaCl, Hello WebAssembly (2017)
> ILP, OoE

Moron here, what is that in this context?

fmakunbound··on Why We Switched from Python to Go (2021)
> Why We Switched from Python to Go > Reason 5 – Fast Compile Time

From Python??

fmakunbound··on Why unprecedented birdflu outbreaks sweeping the world are concerning scientists
Uh curious how your hens feel about the fake owl watching over them.
fmakunbound··on Lessons learned from running Apache Airflow at scale
Definitely this.

Our teams have many 1 or 2 step DAGs that are idempotent. They could have been lambdas and they're already pulling from SQS already. It could be just my misfortune, but in AWS, MWAA is kind of janky. It's difficult to track down problems in the logs (task failures look fine there) and the Airflow UI is randomly unavailable ("document returns empty", "connection reset" kind of things).

fmakunbound··on Design Principles Behind Smalltalk (1981)
Every now and then we get someone on freenode/libre #emacs asking the weirdest questions.
fmakunbound··on Rust: A Critical Retrospective
> It’s 2022 after all, and transistors are cheap: why don’t all our microcontrollers feature page-level memory protection like their desktop counterparts?

I always thought it was because of the added cost from increased design complexity. Is it something else?

fmakunbound··on Jonesforth – A sometimes minimal Forth compiler and tutorial (2007)
If you’ve seen one Forth, you’ve seen one Forth.
fmakunbound··on Flutter 3
> I just wish Google had built Flutter on a low level core that isn't tied to Dart

Why did they tie Flutter to Dart anyway?

fmakunbound··on FAA changes course on eVTOL certification
It’s three or four old SSRIs and that comes with with other caveats and requirements. I’m also a private pilot wannabe and the FAA situation in regard to this is bullshit. Is there a chart somewhere showing how many small planes fall out of the sky due to some dude taking his meds?
fmakunbound··on Give me back my monolith (2019)
At a company I work at currently, they have microservices, but they moved the monolith into the side-car. Best of both worlds.
fmakunbound··on Oxygen Candles: Providing Emergency Air
At the end of the movie about the Kursk, someone drops one in water accidentally and it seems the air ignites afterwards. Are these candles the same thing?
fmakunbound··on (Yet Another) Lisp in Go
PicoLisp works like that IIRC
fmakunbound··on An Afterlife User's Guide to the C64
> Start at n. poke in rnd(256). n++. Poke. Repeat till crash.

Pretty sure all my assembler attempts on the C64 back in the day were basically that

fmakunbound··on Apple, Google and Microsoft Commit to Expanded Support for FIDO Standard
Reading through the threads here: If the HN can't articulate FIDO and differences between it and the now decades old password model to each other, I think regular jack-offs are going to have trouble.

People have the mental model that their secret is stored in their gray matter/post-it note/password manager, and now you're telling them it's in their phone, and somewhat related to the phone's security model, or maybe a "yubikey", or behind biometrics, or maybe not, it depends, and Big Co. has copy, of something, and it's synced, and one possibly "migrates" between Big Co. and Big Co. might deliberately/accidentally disable all your websites, or losing your device/yubikey/piece of paper means you're screwed, possibly...
