flyinRyan··on Sacrificing everything for my dog. How I became a programmer
Not to mention arguably the worst aspect of Karma belief: that the successful deserve it. This kind of belief is what causes so many people in America to vote squarely against their own interests for their entire lives.
flyinRyan··on Edward Snowden: Saving Us from the United Stasi of America
Pre-WWI, Russia was a feudal system. After the revolution, pretty much everything was done via some kind of parliamentary procedures. Granted, Lenin was a bully and hammered through the things he wanted but he largely did it via parliamentary consensus. At least at first.
flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
>Sorry, but it sounds like you're poorly-informed on the subject, or otherwise biased.

I'm still waiting for you to give a concrete example where not knowing or believing evolution will cause a doctor to make a wrong choice. At is typical, people like yourself rely on hand wavy "you just don't understand" nonsense.

>And good luck with those Turing-denying programmers you hired. Let us know how they work out in the long run.

What I'm telling you is that most of the PHP sites on the web are made by people with little or no understanding of the fundamentals of the technology they use. And they make a living just fine. Honestly, I suspect Zuckerberg would be in this group as well. Fundamental understanding is never required to get results, no matter how much we may wish it so.

flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
>doctors need to correctly understand evolution to correctly carry out their duties.

Be concrete. In what way would not knowing anything about evolution affect the duties of a doctor?

> Also, I fail to see how someone that understands their job could be considered more dangerous in doing that job than someone that is cluelessly copying something they've been told.

Well, you were making a comparison to a developer who understands what they work with vs. one who doesn't. For this comparison to work, the one with understanding would have to be evil or dangerous. In that case, I would pick the one with lack of understanding provided they at least can get the work done that I need.

>I can imagine a competent psychopath being more dangerous than an incompetent normal person, but psycopathy is orthogonal to the discussion here, I hope you agree.

That I agree with a competent psychopath is more dangerous than an incompetent person? I would agree with that. I don't necessarily agree that psychopathy is orthogonal to the discussion tough, it's a key part of the reason why I'd vote for someone like Paul. :)

flyinRyan··on Silver makes antibiotics thousands of times more effective
But the problem is procedural so I don't think this will help at all. The issue is that doctors proscribe antibiotics at the drop of the hat. As soon as hypochondriacs start complaining of their phantom symptoms and the strongest antibiotics aren't working they'll just get the new "super" drugs and become resistant to those too.

The only solution is to get the medical profession to stop shotgunning antibiotics at every problem.

flyinRyan··on Edward Snowden: Saving Us from the United Stasi of America
A meta-invocation of Godwin's law. I don't believe I've seen that done yet, kudos to you.
flyinRyan··on Edward Snowden: Saving Us from the United Stasi of America
Can you name a place with that level of surveillance that turned out good for anyone? Because I can point to a lot of vegans there are more obsessed than Hitler was and didn't gas a single Jew.
flyinRyan··on Edward Snowden: Saving Us from the United Stasi of America
All your posts in this thread just make you sound utterly delusional. You're presented with clear cases that prove your optimistic beliefs to be little more than prose from a romance novel and you wave it away with "was a black mark on the history of the US.". So was every other time they've ignored their own laws in the past and every time they will continue to do so in the future.
flyinRyan··on Edward Snowden: Saving Us from the United Stasi of America
Why would they? What do they care?
flyinRyan··on Edward Snowden: Saving Us from the United Stasi of America
I'm afraid your optimism is based on fairly tales, not actual historical precedent.

Laws, Supreme Court and so on mean nothing. They who hold the force make the rules. The constitution is nothing more than a security blanket that people can hold onto and pretend it's protecting them from something. In reality, the government will do what they want to do and (possibly, if they care to) justify it later with some "interpretation" of the law.

flyinRyan··on What happened to innovation?
To be fair, it might have helped some people: black people are just the same as anyone else. They can be president and they'll be the same corrupt shit bags as white men who become president.
flyinRyan··on FBI uses drones inside U.S. for spying, director says
I go the other direction. I believe a person can be evil and do evil while believing themselves good. The results of your actions are what matters, not what you thought when you committed them.
flyinRyan··on Lawyers eye NSA data as treasure trove for evidence in murder, divorce cases
No one is looking for the truth, but rather results. If the phone records, email and so on prove the person is innocent, that data simply won't be used unless they also find an even better candidate for conviction.
flyinRyan··on Lawyers eye NSA data as treasure trove for evidence in murder, divorce cases
I'd be beyond shocked if this wasn't already happening. I suspect one or two "discoveries" (e.g. a mayor smoking crack with a prostitute) were probably really from one of these sources and everyone else is simply shown what is out there on them and they avoid rocking the boat.
flyinRyan··on What asm.js is and isn't
Good, this is exactly what I hope happens. Javascript is a ridiculous language to be the only choice for web programming. Also, as more and more code has to be ran client side, how can I protect my investment for the code I need to not be so easily copy-able?
flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
>Because that's what it means to deny evolution, for anyone whose job is even remotely connected to biological science.

That's absolutely not true. Do you somehow not realize that the process that evolution describes takes millions of years to work? There is no possible way that disbelieving evolution can effect the effectiveness as a doctor.

That's like saying you can't develop a PHP app unless you understand Turing theory. The bulk of the internet proves such an assertion wrong.

flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
If the developer were the best I could hope for I wouldn't take someone worse because of his sad, but ultimately irrelevant beliefs. I would hope I could build on his work enough to get someone better later. I would certainly never shoot myself in the foot by picking someone (or allowing someone to be picked) who had more solid beliefs but was dangerous to the project.
flyinRyan··on Google challenges U.S. gag order, citing First Amendment
Because google is a business that exists to make money and nothing else. Fighting the government is counter to that goal.
flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
If the doctor learned his material properly, what difference would his belief that you evolved from some base mammal vs. belief that humans were created by God a few thousand years ago make? So long as he's following current understanding of what medicines and procedures work, the why doesn't matter all that much and what humans were like a million years ago has literally zero bearing on anything your local doctor will ever do for you.
flyinRyan··on Ask HN: Passive income ideas?
>It's radically easier to invest $100 into hosting ($10 or $20 / month at digital ocean), build a service, and make $1,000 a month (a huge return on the invested capital) - than to earn a mere 10% per year in stocks.

But the stocks can happen with no effort from my side. Just invest in some fund and let it ride. Building a service that will make $1k/mo isn't "racially easier", it would take many hours of work to accomplish which means I can't be using that valuable time for something else more interesting.

flyinRyan··on NSA Disruption of Stock Exchange Bomb Plot Disputed
You're right, but it's an interesting discussion because it shows that not only are we violating privacy rights, etc., but we're doing it for literally no reason.
flyinRyan··on NSA Disruption of Stock Exchange Bomb Plot Disputed
There was also the Iranian (Iraqi?) group who had a vacation in Disney World and videoed some of the experience. They were charged with planning a terrorist attack with such ridiculous evidence as "here! The video is looking at a trash can, they're looking for a place to plant the bomb!". Never heard of any convictions out of that case...
flyinRyan··on NSA Disruption of Stock Exchange Bomb Plot Disputed
Total nonsense. There is no oversight to this process by design. Why would they follow their own made up rules when it's easier not to and no one is going to know.
flyinRyan··on Michael Hastings, 'Rolling Stone' Contributor, Dead at 33
Most people aren't going to think of that in time. I've had my accelerator stick under the carpet before. There was a good few seconds of panic there that would have been deadly had I not been on a straight highway.
flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
Not when you're the biggest guy on the block. It's the little dogs that need to "force project".
flyinRyan··on Bruce Schneier: Has U.S. started an Internet war?
A one-issue voter is bad enough, but an irrelevant non-issue voter really takes the cake. Who gives a flying fuck, are you afraid he'll outlaw evolving or something?

And what does being a medical doctor have to do with evolution? Evolution has no effect on medication at that level.

flyinRyan··on Former NSA Employees Praise Edward Snowden, Corroborate Key Claims
You're 100% right, but you can't win on 3rd party in the US and even if you did your options are people like Ron Paul (good with many policies but dangerous on others).

The best is to do exactly what the GP said: invade a popular existing party. Though, my choice would be the republicans because I anticipate backlash against the dems in the next election cycle.

flyinRyan··on Google challenges U.S. gag order, citing First Amendment
First of all, it doesn't really matter what Google says because they could be lying. Second of all, there are trivial ways around "direct access". Google will have world class mirroring capabilities, so they need only mirror to a government server. They could do this manually (per request) or automatically. This would fit within "no direct access".
flyinRyan··on MySQL man pages silently relicensed away from GPL
If you're going to switch away from MySQL anyway, I would suggest taking the hit and moving to PostgreSQL.
flyinRyan··on MySQL man pages silently relicensed away from GPL
Which means Monty has screwed everyone again. He should have let MySQL die in Oracle's cradle so the open source world could move over to a better database: PostgreSQL.
