fluxsauce··on NPM Acquires ^Lift Security and the Node Security Platform
> In conjunction with the next version of npm, shipping with Node.js version 10, we’ll introduce a series of new security features available to every npm user, directly integrated into the npmjs.com registry and the npm command line tool.

I'm personally really excited by this. The nsp tool is fantastic, and having these sorts of tools available for all engineers will inform and educate.

> Soon, we’ll also introduce a series of security products specifically tailored to the unique requirements of corporate developers and enterprises.

Curious what that means; since part of this acquisition is the sunsetting of https://nodesecurity.io/ does that mean that npm will be providing those services instead?

fluxsauce··on To Make Sassages
There's some odd markup:

> <div>you cant p<span class="ex">er</span>seve the suet from the meat</div>

It's also around a possible spelling error"? (preserve vs perseve)

fluxsauce··on Be careful what you copy: Invisibly inserting usernames into text
That's a really interesting technique!

I'm trying to think of what else could be done with the encryption / description, but tracking is a really effective use case.

Could probably encode some other secret messages in there, make a blog post about cheese include a hash to a pastebin.

It also reminds me of the importance of having strong validation around things like usernames, because if I had a username that looked official but contained an invisible character... Related: ICANN explicitly forbids domain names from including zero-width space.

fluxsauce··on Show HN: Egg Gradients – Gradient color inspirations
Those are... unique names.
fluxsauce··on DeleteFacebook: Perspective from Mastodon
Nope. It's more similar to Twitter (chronological timeline), but without promoted messages / "you may have missed" types of features.

Event Invitations is one of the few uses of FB that I still have. I'm open to alternatives that simplify facilitate threaded discussions between those who were invited, but as with any system convenience is a factor.

Google Calendar does work, yet somehow (and ironically) seems more intrusive than Facebook in that you're communicating directly with emails; the younger the participant, the greater the lack of enthusiasm for emails.

fluxsauce··on DeleteFacebook: Perspective from Mastodon
Yup, it's just lurking next to the router.

Convincing - tried it with just my partner first and smoothed out some rough edges. I then sent a group email to extended family that included a brief justification, some screen shots of it in action, a picture of the actual server, and an offer to create an account for them. Transparency, ease of use, and privacy were all important factors.

Most live far away and have griped about various facets of Facebook but felt like it was a necessary evil. This has been a good alternative for daily communication, discussions about weather and children, and so forth. The closest to game support is sharing crossword solving times with a hashtag.

fluxsauce··on DeleteFacebook: Perspective from Mastodon
I'm using an unfederated node of Madtodon running on a Raspberry pi with Let's Encrypt certs as a private family social network. Works well and family response has been massively positive.

You can disconnect while staying connected on your own terms.

fluxsauce··on Warning.js: the opposite of noscript warnings
> I hate JavaScript so much that I'm going to include JavaScript complaining about you running my JavaScript.

Or just don't include any JavaScript.

fluxsauce··on Show HN: Decentralized application starter with Vue, Ethereum and IPFS
I'm holding out until Web 5.0 RTM RC3. It'll still require a Flash plugin, ironically.
fluxsauce··on Is-Vegan – Helps you to find out which food ingredients are vegan
I saw that too, ended up making an issue for it because it spoke to the underlying problem of using exact matching. https://github.com/hmontazeri/is-vegan/issues/9
fluxsauce··on Changes to the YouTube Partner Program
I had some original content with over a million views from a decade ago. I now have other priorities and the language like

> Accordingly, this email serves as 30 days notice that your YouTube Partner Program terms are terminated.

feels like a pretty big fuck you.

fluxsauce··on Patreon’s new service fee spurs concern that creators will lose patrons
Given both the presence of "Hate" in the name of the site and the fact that it's one of Richard Spencer's revenue streams, I don't agree with your assessment that it's temporary and it's oriented towards "not safe for work" content.

Sexual content can be considered NSFW and should not be conflated with a "safe haven" for hate speech.

fluxsauce··on Ask HN: What do you care about the most in a tech job post?
Is this a team that I want to spend more awake time with than my family?

Do I have any moral objections to the way they conduct business?

Will I be doing something that's interesting?

Would I want to tell others about what I do?

fluxsauce··on Firefox Send: Private, Encrypted File Sharing

fluxsauce··on Firefox Send: Private, Encrypted File Sharing
Is there something about Mozilla that I'm missing? They're absolutely an OSS group in my mind, and the source is on GitHub like someone else pointed out.
fluxsauce··on CircleCI trusts 8 analytics companies with your source code and API tokens
That treats the symptom, not the problem.
fluxsauce··on Google admits citing 4chan to spread fake Vegas shooter news

Nope.

fluxsauce··on SharknAT&To: Vulnerabilities in AT&T U-verse modems
This is a shocking and overly broad title.

I have Sonic Fusion, which includes a Pace 5268AC modem which is provided by AT&T U-verse and I cannot replicate the issue.

The title should be "Some AT&T U-verse modems..."

fluxsauce··on VW engineering executive sentenced to 40-month prison term in diesel case
Good catch, that was towards the end.
fluxsauce··on VW engineering executive sentenced to 40-month prison term in diesel case
Not questioning his innocence, but will the executives involved be held to the same legal standard?

EDIT: FTA

> U.S. prosecutors have charged eight current and former Volkswagen executives in connection with the diesel emissions cheating probe. Liang is one of the lowest-ranking executives charged so far.

> Another VW executive, Oliver Schmidt, has pleaded guilty and is scheduled to be sentenced in Detroit on Dec. 6. Under a plea agreement, Schmidt could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of between $40,000 and $400,000 after admitting to conspiring to mislead U.S regulators and violating clean air laws.

fluxsauce··on Redesigning Google News
I like the idea of fact checking from journalistic entities.

What I don't like is that a lot of the "Fact Checks" are just clickbait titles.

> "Was a Chinese Man Arrested in New York for Selling Hot Dogs Made from Dog Meat?"

Just give me the answer. I didn't click through, I'm assuming that they're trying to trigger a bias.

There's actually another one that is good:

> "Bernie Sanders' projection of 'thousands' of deaths from lost health coverage is well-supported"

fluxsauce··on Show HN: Audioshop – Audio image editing
This is fantastic.

For folks wanting to play around with this on OSX:

brew install ffmpeg lame brew install sox --with-lame

The --with-lame is important if you want to process mp4s.

Might want to consider putting some kind of progress indicator (simple polling on tmp_audio_in.u8 vs tmp_audio_out.u8). I ended up looking at the output directory with

watch -n .5 ls -la /tmp/audio_shop-DIRECTORY

I think the cleanup isn't working quite right, getting a rm unlink failure.

Seriously, this is a neat hack.

fluxsauce··on CIRCLean – USB key sanitizer
> The code runs on a Raspberry Pi (a small hardware device), which also means it is not required to plug the original USB key into a computer.
