flufluflufluffy··on The US is flirting with its first-ever population decline
Who knows? Maybe they are. I’m not from Chad myself (and sounds like you aren’t either), so we’re really not in a position to speculate on that. I do know that it’s quite common for one culture to have values or think in ways that are unintuitive to another culture.
flufluflufluffy··on Kolakoski Sequence
I guess you could say the Kolakoski sequence is special in being the “simplest” version of such a sequence (ignoring the finite trivial case {1} xD)
flufluflufluffy··on MaliciousCorgi: AI Extensions send your code to China
> We install them without a second thought. They're in the official marketplace. They have thousands of reviews. They work. So we grant them access to our workspaces, our files, our keystrokes - and assume they're only using that access to help us code.

Who is this “we”? I don’t, and don’t know anybody else who does this.

Also, was this article itself written by an AI assistant? If the author is that carefree regarding these extensions, I guess probably.

flufluflufluffy··on Scientist who helped eradicate smallpox dies at age 89
Your child being vaccinated against measles is 1. yes, protecting them, but 2. also protecting all the other children at school they interact with, and vice-versa. It isn’t just an individual choice. You should definitely fault people for going the other direction because they are willingly increasing the chance of your child or your child’s friends getting measles.
flufluflufluffy··on Use "\A \z", not "^ $" with Python regular expressions
The vast majority of the times I use ^/$, I actually want the behavior of matching start/end of lines. If I had some multi-line text, and only wanted to update or do something with the actual beginning or end of the entire text, I’d typically just do it manually.
flufluflufluffy··on A list of fun destinations for telnet
For real! I just unlocked my memory of the Star Wars asciimation. Totally forgot it existed until now.
flufluflufluffy··on Meet the Alaska Student Arrested for Eating an AI Art Exhibit
I tried reading the article but after the third time the page’s scroll state reset on its own due to all the dynamic ads/popups/notices, I had to give up.
flufluflufluffy··on Show HN: Subth.ink – write something and see how many others wrote the same
Popular belief holds that the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog, not the fence.
flufluflufluffy··on How your high school affects your chances of UC Admission
It’s always been this way; previously we just had to play to the old white men’s biases.
flufluflufluffy··on Microsoft May Have Created the Slowest Windows in 25 Years with Windows 11
One random little thing to add on to the list of shitty things about Windows 11: the new default image-viewing program (Photos), is incapable of rendering multi-page TIFF files. No error message or anything, just displays the first page and acts like everything’s fine. The OLD image viewing program (Windows Photo Viewer), displays them no problem though…
flufluflufluffy··on The unreasonable effectiveness of the Fourier transform
Lies, Damned Lies, and Unreasonable Effectiveness: How Lies in Titles are Damn Near Unreasonably Effective
flufluflufluffy··on The unreasonable effectiveness of the Fourier transform
Also how most of the articles with this kind of title (those posted on HN at least) are about computation/logical processes, which are by definition, reasonable.
flufluflufluffy··on Advanced Rail Energy Storage of North America
ahh that makes total sense lol
flufluflufluffy··on Venezuela's interim government says it is united behind Maduro
The plan is so clear it’s dumb. The successor they have in mind is the most likely, by their judgment, to agree to something where the US gets the most oil. A corrupt leader is easier to convince to save their own ass.
flufluflufluffy··on Advanced Rail Energy Storage of North America
Where does the energy to lift the cars up in the first place come from? Another set of “freely available gravity” cars down the street?
flufluflufluffy··on Go away Python
Anytime I have the need to write a script, I write it myself. When I do this, I like to do it in Python, rather than Go.

I very rarely, if ever, “install” or run other people’s scripts. Because typically, a script is a specialized piece of code that does something specific the user was trying to do when they wrote it.

However, I do often install applications or libraries written by other people in Python. Typically, I don’t have a problem, but sometimes I run into dependency hell. But this is something different than me just writing scripts. For scripting, Python is great.

flufluflufluffy··on Go away Python
I don’t really understand the initial impetus. I like scripting in Python. That’s one of the things it’s good at. You can extremely quickly write up a simple script to perform some task, not worrying about types, memory, yada yada yada. I don’t like using Python as the main language for a large application.
flufluflufluffy··on How we automated federal retirements
Ah yes, the Nextjs app with access to personally identifiable information for every federal employee.
flufluflufluffy··on Some Epstein file redactions are being undone
you telling me when I stick my pen up my nose I’m hacking it?
flufluflufluffy··on Some Epstein file redactions are being undone
Yeah but there was no lock; somebody put a box around the doorknob without anything holding it there, and somebody removed the box and opened the door.
flufluflufluffy··on Gimp Source Code
I’m still waiting to be able to move 2 layers at once in GIMP
flufluflufluffy··on New mathematical framework reshapes debate over simulation hypothesis
yes haha, it is mumbo jumbo to the uninitiated (which can mean many different things!)
flufluflufluffy··on New mathematical framework reshapes debate over simulation hypothesis
The whole “simulation hypothesis” thing has always irked me. To me, the question of whether our universe was [“intentionally” “created” by some other “being(s)”] vs [“naturally” happened] is meaningless. Whatever it was on the other side is way too insanely unfathomable to be classified into those 2 human-created ideas. Ugh the whole thing is so self-centered.
flufluflufluffy··on Over 40% of deceased drivers in vehicle crashes test positive for THC: Study
Came here to say most of this, also worth calling out the note at the bottom:

> Note: This research was presented as an abstract at the ACS Clinical Congress Scientific Forum. Research abstracts presented at the ACS Clinical Congress Scientific Forum are reviewed and selected by a program committee but are not yet peer reviewed.

My guess is when it gets to peer review, one of the reviewers will request at least mentioning these limitations. As it was only an abstract, it’s possible the paper itself does mention these limitations already as well.

flufluflufluffy··on Revisiting "Let's Build a Compiler"
Error tolerance in this context means the parser produces a walkable AST even if the input code is syntactically invalid, instead of just throwing/reporting the error. It’s useful for IDEs, where the code is often in an invalid state as the developer is typing, but you still want to be able to report diagnostics on whatever parts of the code are syntactically valid.
flufluflufluffy··on 1D Conway's Life glider found, 3.7B cells long
Me: oh cool, this is interesting, I don’t quite understand what exactly that means, let me read the thread to learn more…

The thread: > Replacing ECCA1 by version with step after the direction change could save something like 1% of the ecca1 bits size. Compiling agnosticized program instead of fixed lane program by ecca1 could save something like 1% as well (just guesses). Build of smaller ECCA1 would shorten binary portion, but it would be hardly seen in the ship size.

> Using agnosticized recipe in the fuse portion would definitely reduce its size. Better cordership seed and better salvo for gpse90 would help…

Dear lord I had no idea there’s this much jargon in the game of life community. Gonna be reading the wiki for hours

flufluflufluffy··on Abuse of the nullish coalescing operator in JS/TS
I use this operator all the time in a similar but not quite the same way:

<input type=“text” defaultValue={user.email ?? “”}>

The user is an entity from the DB, where the email field is nullable, which makes perfect sense. The input component only accepts a string for the defaultValue prop. So you coalesce the possible null to a string.

flufluflufluffy··on Heretic: Automatic censorship removal for language models
I’ll never understand this. A company puts in an immense amount of time money and effort into creating a product, and because it doesn’t work the way you want it to, it’s an assault on your freedom. Whaaa?!?! You can see things and ask things and learn things without using an AI company’s product, you know like, interacting with real people in the real world.
flufluflufluffy··on Heretic: Automatic censorship removal for language models
This is definitely a completely different thing, but for your problem, Qwen Image-Edit is a really good model that you can either download and run on your own hardware, or on an online service like civit.ai
flufluflufluffy··on Our investigation into the suspicious pressure on Archive.today
Amazing, here is a list of other similarly hilariously-titled “in rem jurisdiction” cases: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_rem_jurisdiction#Examples

Some good ones: - United States v. One Solid Gold Object in Form of a Rooster - United States v. 11 1/4 Dozen Packages of Articles Labeled in Part Mrs. Moffat's Shoo-Fly Powders for Drunkenness - South Dakota v. Fifteen Impounded Cats
