flmontpetit··on Debugging WebAssembly outside of the browser
It's simply not possible to quantify performance in this way, when comparing language implementations. Performance can also be constrained by environment and/or context on top of the expensive abstractions the compiler or interpreter are required to make. But I'm honestly just being pedantic.

You make a good argument about the potential costs abstractions when they are applied at a very large scale. You are however ignoring the cost of things that may be prevented with high-level language features, like for instance errors in memory management which in my opinion are far worse than wasted cycles. I'd wager most would choose a marginally higher power bill over Heartbleed.

The vast majority of users have no strong opinions on the matter of software package distribution. They take what's given to them.

The vast majority of users are perfectly fine with the Windows experience of dodging fake download button ads, unticking bundled McAfee installs, having no automatic update mechanism, etc (which is still more or less the default even on Win10).

They only start caring when they can't do something they want to do. They rarely think about the "how".

flmontpetit··on Huawei Seeks Independence from the US with RISC-V and Ascend Chips
If Huawei adopts RISC-V then they drive RISC-V adoption to some indeterminate extent. When the market is sufficiently large, someone might consider RISC-V laptops to be a good idea. Even if it's "only" a company like Pine64.

You have a surplus of condescension and a lack of imagination.

If you properly examine the context then you can do like most and interpret "ARM" as "current mainstream ARM implementations".

"Literally every software and hardware market since computers became a commodity" all over again, you mean. They've always tended towards monopolies.

IP law is harmful to society.

I'm a C# dev and the only anxiety I've experienced has lied in having to maintain garbage legacy code.

Yes. Being a software developer is easy. It's not necessarily the case, but I can think of no other trade that pays so well and offers so many opportunities for so little ability, effort, accountability, responsibility and stress.

For real. Being a software developer is probably the easiest and safest career you can have without being born into wealth.

edit: I should also mention having options is not really a blessing when they're all bad.
