flipside··on Our Journey to and Through YC
that's the idea ;)
flipside··on Our Journey to and Through YC
Great story of perseverance but applying 4 times and getting interviewed 4 times on 3 trips is hardly embarrassing.

I'm working on my 7th YC app with no interviews to date, but I've used every one of those rejections to become better as a founder and advance my startup, tinj. The reality is that all the previous rejections were deserved, YC would have hurt more than it helped because we would have accelerated in the wrong direction.

Rejection for founders isn't embarrassing, but not learning from it is.

flipside··on New Requests for Startups
I'm glad the disrupt Hollywood rfc is now Hollywood 2.0, before it seemed needlessly antagonistic.

If anyone else is interested in Hollywood 2.0, hit me up (check profile). Tinj is reimagining content ratings, reviews and recommendations.

flipside··on Applications for YC W15 are open
Future versions will be easier for users and have better incentives. Gotta start somewhere.

An example of things we can build is a recommendation system.

flipside··on Applications for YC W15 are open
Applying to YC has definitely been a great way to asses the current status of Tinj. In the early days, we'd spend over a week working on the YC application which was definitely a sign that we weren't ready. Thanks to all that work though, I've gotten better at communicating who/what/why we are.
flipside··on Applications for YC W15 are open
The most interesting thing about Curv is that it isn't realtime. I know a lot of realtime rating startups that have closed up because they never got traction.
flipside··on Applications for YC W15 are open
Things have changed a lot over the years (team, product, etc), but the overall vision hasn't, reinventing how people share information. What's changed the most though is me.

From the start I new that my limitations were the only things holding me back, so the past 4 years has been largely dedicated to reinventing myself into the type of person that could make Tinj successful.

As for the product, we'll be starting a private beta of Curv soon, a simple way to rate videos after watching by drawing how you felt over time. Can check out the demo at http://tinj.com

If anyone is excited about the potential of tinj or curv, email me at mat at tinj. PS - We're hiring. ;)

flipside··on Applications for YC W15 are open
Cool that the application explicitly asks for progress updates for those of us that have applied before (8th try is the charm?). Before I was never sure how much my previous applications impacted things so it's nice to be able to make my own case for things.

Really glad for the application overhaul, looking good.

flipside··on Show HN: Impraise – Easy continuous feedback at work (YC S14)
More details and screenshots on techcrunch.

Really glad feedback is moving in the direction of smaller, more frequent interactions.

flipside··on Bikanta’s (YC S14) Tiny Diamonds Find Cancer Before It Spreads
I used to study nano and I remember hearing about nanodiamonds 3 years ago in the context of medical diagnostics. It's really exciting to see more nano stuff taking off as startups.

Major props for using a cheap source of nanodiamonds. Any issues getting ones that are the right size/shape?

flipside··on Netflix Kills Discussions
Maybe it's just because I'm working on product in a related space (tinj.com, launching "soon"), but this problem is perfectly solvable.

In a world where consumption is on demand, discussion groups need to be on demand as well. A way to do this is to create a new discussion group for each episode so people can connect and discuss with others that have seen up to the same point.

Sure, most of the action will be at the latest part, and spoilers might slip in, but with more people continually trickling through the system, the conversation for each episode never really needs to end.

Anyways, I could say more but time to get back to work. Feel free to reach out, contact info in my profile.

flipside··on Interviewing as a Front-End Engineer in San Francisco
Does anybody conduct "open book" interviews? I'd be more curious how someone goes about finding the answer than if they knew it on the spot.
flipside··on Not everyone is going to like the thing you made, and that’s okay
Starting with entertainment for a variety of reasons.
flipside··on Not everyone is going to like the thing you made, and that’s okay
Sounds like you want a multi-dimensional rating system that works. Patience, it's coming. We're focused on doing it right.

1. Sign up at http://tinj.com

2. ...

3. Profit... I mean, we'll let you know when we launch.

flipside··on Netflix ditches Webkit to roll out new UI for smart TVs, Roku boxes, consoles
Among Netflix users, 48% watch on a computer screen (up from 44% last year); 23% watch on a smartphone (up from 11%); 15% watch on their iPad, way up from 5% last year. But the percentage of users who reported using Roku or Nintendo's Wii game console dropped this year.

flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
The opportunity to "decide in the air" is one of the things that's missing from "feeling lucky" recommendations, too much happens in that one step.
flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
If you can think of an easier way to hack Netflix without an API key (which they don't give out anymore), I'd love to hear it!

Don't worry, this is just the start. Big things have small beginnings.

flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
Paradox of Choice is a well documented phenomenon. http://www.ted.com/talks/barry_schwartz_on_the_paradox_of_ch...

Many people (me included) aren't willing to spend sufficient mental energy on a decision based on what's available when we want to be entertained.

A related problem is that Netflix does a bad job of managing expectations, but we're working on that with tinj.

flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
Thanks for the validation! We're actually out to solve that problem for movies, this is just the start. Should have another product announcement in a week or so.

Give us a few years and we'll get to trousers too.

flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
I built v0 at the TV of Tomorrow Hackathon (http://hack.tvot.tv) in June, v0.1.1 at Disrupt SF Hackathon 2013 in September, and cleaned it up over the last 48 hours instead of sleeping.
flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
hacking around indecisiveness ftw!
flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
Added to my todo list, thanks for the suggestion!
flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
Gonna add an autoplay checkbox and bail button tonight!
flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
Hey HN, the chrome extension is about 3 days of work at this point but mobile/web versions are in the works.

Lot's more cool stuff planned and feedback welcome!

flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
I came up with the basic idea for showdown about a week before they posted that.

Lots of opportunity in the space, decided to build a chrome extension because Netflix doesn't allow new API access anymore...

flipside··on Show HN: Netflix Showdown – because I can't decide what to watch
glad you like it! paradox of choice all the way, the time constraint helps people expend more energy over a short period of time
flipside··on MIT Wristband Could Make Air Conditioning Obsolete
Making a system like this safe is easy with a tiny bit of effort.

With cheap sensors, the room temperature, body temperature, humidity and perspiration can be measured.

Run some analysis and warning the wearer about heat stroke suddenly becomes possible!

flipside··on Last Minute Y Combinator Application Guide - Apply in 30 Minutes
I'm glad this is an important question but I always struggle with it.

1. I'm doing my startup for too many reasons to list.

2. Having multidisciplinary domain expertise doesn't allow for a concise answer.

3. At least the last part is easier since people that I've only met once keep checking in to ask when we'll launch.

flipside··on The Economics of a Hit TV Show
How much data are networks making these decisions with and are they the right data?

Just saying "focus group" doesn't really provide much insight on the level and utility of feedback networks receive.

How big of an opportunity do you feel there is for more/better data?

flipside··on How to Convince Investors
"The time to raise money is not when you need it, or when you reach some artificial deadline like a Demo Day. It's when you can convince investors, and not before."

Been waiting for someone to articulate this for a while now. Pitch people an idea a few thousand times and you get pretty good at reading if people buy it. Getting close to the "convince" threshold for investors and when we do reach it, watch out!
