flannell··on Ask HN: $40k on physical hardware? or use the cloud?
Formatting gone a bit wrong. So two servers with both cpu's, 7 sticks of 4gb ram and dual mirrored raid disks each.

Thanks for posting, I do love this community.

flannell··on Ask HN: $40k on physical hardware? or use the cloud?
Okay, you asked for it!

2 x Express x3550 M3 + 2 x Xeon 4C E5506 processors + 7 x 4Gb memory sticks + 2 x 73Gb disks + 1 x Qlogic raid card

1 x IBM storage DS3300 + 8 x 300Gb disks

2 x VM Ware standard 2 x SuSE 11

Also some Watchguard and Gigabit switch.

flannell··on Ask HN: What are some good neighborhoods in NYC?
I know you said NYC, but I have to add Hoboken. I absolutely loved living there 2007-2008. The Path subway was nice and reliable and terminated at World Trade and as far as Maceys on 33rd. Here's some trivia. Hoboken has more bars per square mile than anywhere in the US.. result!
flannell··on A clever way to fight IE6
I don't mean the IT department upgrading their own computers, they probably already done so, I mean as a company. If they run an old citrix or MS TS then they're locked into XP. I've seen this first hand. A lot of global companies haven't upgraded to the latest version and continue to run Software that even Microsoft no longer supports!
flannell··on Why Germans have higher productivity and longer vacations
As a Brit who used to work in New York, for an investment company, I have a different view. While I agree my US fellow workers are very sociable during the day, they do tend to run off 5pm sharp! There's no "go for beers after work" environment. I spoke to them candidly about this and they said their real friends are the ones they grew up with and tend to hang out with them. I also had a colleague at HSBC and another at JPM who also expressed the same view, but added that's why brits do well over in the states because they are used to working longer hours and this appears favourable to the bosses.

Anyway, not trolling, just thought relevant.

flannell··on A clever way to fight IE6
I think we should remember why IE6 continues to burden us. All those companies spending millions adding Citrix and MS Terminal services to their network many years ago need a few more to get their ROI back. In these cash strapped times I can't see an already over stretched IT department putting together an operating system upgrade for 600+ desktops.

I develop a web based app and it's a nightmare adding those awful hacks to get IE6 to play ball. However, many companies are stuck with IE6 and do you want to alienate a potential customer(s)?

Microsoft.. you were an arsehole.

flannell··on Ask HN: Should I take this Google job offer?
I'm guessing your no name poly is actually De Montfort university in Leicester? It was a dump back in 1999 when I got my 2.1 CompSci degree. An old friend of mine from uni moved from the UK to SanFran to work for Lucas Arts and I think it was the best move he ever made. So, seems like a good move. Good luck!
flannell··on 'How piracy works' according to Minecraft creator
I agree with you. However, truly outstanding apps will always do well. I downloaded Angry Birds Lite to my itouch, played the first few levels and promptly bought it. I also did the same with Tower Madness. There was an article on a flash games company that could detect when the app was running on illegal web servers. It would display an advert inside the game saying where it came from which resulted in a spike of traffic and revenue for the original owners. I believe a few developers are now treating the pirates as salesmen to reach a larger buying audience. It's not ideal, just goes with the territory

flannell··on HDCP master key allegedly posted
I guess Microsoft is still reeling about losing the HD format war to Sony! tbh, I think everyone knows that video streaming is the future and not physical disks. I give the format two years.
flannell··on HDCP master key allegedly posted
I've had nothing but trouble with HDCP. I've used HDMI matrix switches to transport a video signal around the house. 40% of the time I get the HD snowstorm so have to reboot the TV to attempt a second handshake. This gives a low Wife Approval Factor. I believe they should stop torturing the paying punters, like me, and just be happy with the majority who pay and not the minority that don't. Also, before someone mentions the x billion lost per year, I doubt maybe the 100,000 that downloaded 'The Bounter Hunter' would of seriously bought it.
flannell··on Ask HN: Am I the only one who's not in love with Google Instant?
I'd be interested to. At the moment I just use Firefox web browser and the Webdeveloper plugin added with a tick on option 'disable Javascript'

A hot piece of iron? Luxury. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt. </python>
flannell··on Being unhappy running a successful business
Having money gives you options, having no money gives you limited options and being in debt you have none. Simples.
flannell··on I'm a nearly broke developer/entrepreneur and felt like venting
Yep. I've been there, and still paying back the loans I borrowed which finish end of next year. Third times a charm though. I now have 16% equity in a performance management biz which is doing well. I believe most successful business men go bankrupt or got themselves into serious debt. Believe me, you're not alone in your desperate situation and I hope your situation improves quickly!
flannell··on 3 Stupid Reasons to Raise Venture Funding
I don't agree. I've been working for a company for the last five years building the Software alone that could of taken perhaps one year. The company has no debt and a great balance sheet, however any big company could catch us up in six months because they have the right resources. So I believe VC is great to get your product to market A.S.A.P before you lose the edge.

I would love to get a couple and race them around the office. Friday afternoons just got more interesting!
