flagged24··on Show HN: A NextJS boilerplate to automate all the boring stuff
Spam it like you own it
flagged24··on Next.js, Just Why?
It's unfortunate as this will take a lot of dev time from a well running project on the page router. Remix certainly looks good, I've done a small project with it and like how actions and loaders work. But it's also less polished and has a smaller community. For instance a relative simple thing as running Remix from a subfolder was overly complicated. There is also no guarantee Remix won't pull a 180 like Next.js did. The devs have a history of breaking changes with React Router.
flagged24··on Next.js, Just Why?
Unfortunately I will have to move a significant codebase out of Next.js to perhaps Remix as I run into all mentioned points.
flagged24··on Node.js/node at 99.9k GitHub Stars
I think Node.js doesn't have a big powerful ORM because the community isn't looking for one. Can't speak of everyone but I take a good query builder over a fat ORM any day.

flagged24··on Show HN: Remix Workflows – Built with Remix, React Flow, Prisma and Tailwind CSS
Found another issue: (https://remix-workflows.vercel.app/admin/workflow-engine/wor... + create new)

Error: Unexpected Server Error at handleDataRequestRR (/var/task/node_modules/@remix-run/server-runtime/dist/server.js:128:31) at requestHandler (/var/task/node_modules/@remix-run/server-runtime/dist/server.js:55:18) at Server.default (file:///var/task/api/server-build-nodejs-eyJydW50aW1lIjoibm9kZWpzIn0.mjs:74:20) at Server.<anonymous> (/var/task/___vc/__launcher/__launcher.js:14:9390)

I guess there is still some work to do.

Invalid `prisma.workflow.findMany()` invocation: Timed out fetching a new connection from the connection pool. More info: http://pris.ly/d/connection-pool (Current connection pool timeout: 10, connection limit: 5)

Not looking good

flagged24··on Spain lives in flats: why we have built our cities vertically
I'm okay with these high rises so I can enjoy the quiet tranquility of rural Spain. Everytime we do stay in an apartment in Spain the lack of sound proofing really stands out. Perhaps even more so because everything is tiled, no carpets.
flagged24··on Remix v2.2 with new core Netlify primitives
Maybe Hetzner, Digital Ocean and OVH should band together and create a Next.js or Remix.js clone, promoting a self hosted framework.
flagged24··on Ask HN: Is Express still "de-facto" for building Node back ends?
Next.js doesn't exclude ExpressJS. It's actually not that uncommon for self hosted Next.js instances to have a custom server setup with ExpressJS.
flagged24··on Ask HN: Do you use a mini PC, and what's your workflow?
Mini PC (ASRock X300) and Samsung DeX on a S22 Ultra for on the go / portable sessions. Both setups using a portable 15.6" screen.
flagged24··on Show HN: ImapFlow, modern IMAP client for Node.js
>"Subscribe to a folder - the folder is included in the folder listing." Thanks, that clears it up!

About the email events, that sounds like a great value prop for a third party service to abstract away. Will have a look at EmailEngine.

flagged24··on Show HN: ImapFlow, modern IMAP client for Node.js
There is method to subscribe to an inbox [0], but it's unclear to me what this will accomplish. I have a use case for monitoring an inbox and parsing mail based on various headers/content (eg: bounced, auto reply, abuse report). Does subscribe subscribe to new email events? Currently using node-imap [1] for these events.

PS: Thanks for your work on nodemailer, using it in production for years now.

flagged24··on Android phones disabled remotly in Mexico
I wonder if one could prevent this from happening by using GrapheneOS which can limit things like sim toolkit and Google Play Services. Not sure what avenue Samsung used to disable these phones.
flagged24··on Web components will outlive JavaScript frameworks
Isn't IE dropped in the upcoming htmx 2.0 release? Not that it's a bad thing, but goes against the superior backwards compatibility claim.
flagged24··on Next.js 14
>"It feels a bit ridiculous to release Next.js 14 today as we're still getting used to Next.js 13"

I guess it had to be ready for the Next.js Conf event.

flagged24··on Add Friction to Your Onboarding
>"Your goal is for people to get their first moments of value from your product, commonly known as “activation”. All the talk about eliminating friction and removing steps is totally detached from this goal." This is the gist I Guess. Remove as much friction as possible without compromising the "moments of value".
flagged24··on Why Is the Front End Stack So Complicated?
The app router is definitely not a valid alternative for my current projects on page router. I'm glad I'm old enough not to jump on shiny new things and burn myself in the process. I would actually like to take a step back from Next.js and move to something more simple. Ideally still server side rendered .TSX but with some jQuery like interactivity sprinkled on top on the client.
flagged24··on SSH-audit: SSH server and client security auditing
I added a Telegram poll in a private group with a yes/no option as a second factor for all my (ssh) servers (using session pam_exec.so /path/to/poll/binary). If my ssh key gets compromised, I can still deny ssh access. Unless my entire laptop gets stolen while running of course.
flagged24··on Netflix crushed the Latin American password black market
I know this site. Can't believe they are still operational and have pretty much everything under the sun.
flagged24··on How did Israel and the U.S. miss what Hamas was planning?
Another perspective is this was allowed to happen. It's a bit of wild conspiracy at the moment but if you think about long term strategy, events such as this can shape public opinion. The images going around the world of the terror attack on the "Music Festival For Peace" is going to be quite the PR nightmare for Hamas.
flagged24··on Is Bun much faster than Node.js?
I've seen benchmarks where Node outperforms Go when utilizing Node 's worker threads [0]. But you're right, making real world benchmarks is hard. Even though the mentioned article is using a pure javascript qr code module with no external dependency (eg a database) in order to test a bit more than just the http implementation which is probably just the C implementation in Node.js and the ZIG version in Bun.

flagged24··on Web server 'hello world' benchmark: Go vs. Node.js vs. Nim vs. Bun
I saw a post here [0] about a more realistic benchmark where Bun got worse performance than Node.js. Just testing the http implementation seems a bit useless.

flagged24··on Is Bun much faster than Node.js?
Interesting findings. I was always a bit wary about just benchmarking the raw http implementation instead of a more real world scenario.
flagged24··on Ask HN: Risk of Vendor Lock-In with Next.js
I think app router and react server components optimize for serverless/edge. That optimization comes at a cost that I think is best visible in this GitHub issue: https://github.com/vercel/next.js/discussions/42732

As someone who runs Next.js with a custom server setup on a VPS, I think the haydays of Next.js are behind us. I'm looking to simplify my frontend stack. I love how stable my Node.js backend is and want the same for my frontend.

flagged24··on Ask HN: Something Wrong with Hetzner Servers?
Bare metal servers? No problems here with VPS/cloud. Best to contact support I guess.
flagged24··on Chinese hackers have unleashed a never-before-seen Linux backdoor
It doesn't seem to contain much info about the infection technique/ deployment. Everyone can write a backdoor but getting the backdoor in is the real challenge and the interesting part.
flagged24··on Remix V2
I should give this a try. Especially before migrating to the new App Router in Next.js.
flagged24··on GitHubGuessr

flagged24··on Vivaldi on Android Automotive is the first browser available on Google Play
Never heard of the Vivaldi browser until I needed a browser that focused the address bar on a new tab in Samsung DeX. They are apparently on the ball when it comes to Android.
