fjabre··on Categories of deep recommendation systems
The recommendation systems (i.e. Netflix) for movies and music are still just awful in terms of guessing my tastes.

I still find that human based recommendations for things like music and movies consistently beat the algorithm at predicting what I'll like vs what I won't like just about every time.

IMHO it will be many years before these recommendation engines consistently pick media I like to watch or listen to.

They are still far inferior to human based recommendations.

Guessing what someone will want to watch at any given moment is probably a harder problem than getting a car to drive autonomously.

EDIT (source): I work on a mostly human powered recommendation engine/expert system @ lazyday.tv. It does not use ML to make recommendations. It takes some creative approaches to solving the movie recommendation problem using an expert system and optimizing search results.

> Heard activists encouraging driving under the influence because "it makes you chill out and take your time, man." There's no excuse for this shit.

Eh this doesn't bother me. You know how many people are on the roads dosed up on legal pain killers way worse and more sedating and addictive than weed?

My point was that idiots on one side are putting the idiots on the other side in jail.

Like I said I don't blame people for being defensive. I think it's clear which side is more in the wrong - the people fear mongering on the government's side.

fjabre··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
Of course but I don't think there's any debate about which side has been subjected to more propaganda over the years.

Regardless this furthers my argument - that there is not enough research because of said propaganda for any claims to be made in the first place which is the real travesty.

fjabre··on Escaping San Francisco
SF has problems like most major cities but your exaggeration is obviously ridiculous. Have you not traveled to 3rd world countries?
fjabre··on Social media bots often tweet fake health claims about cannabis: study
Can you blame them? Last time I checked ginger wasn't subjected to 70 years of war on drugs propaganda. Never heard of anyone thrown in jail for consuming ginger.

Maybe people want to consume a drug without being labeled and stereotyped by people who say all drugs are bad and that getting high is a sin.

fjabre··on An account is now required to read Reddit comment threads?
Quora is particularly annoying in this regard. I too refuse to sign in oftentimes when they force me to.

When a service puts its core usefulness behind an unnecessary login then they are forcing me to sign in, they are not making me want to. There is a key difference.

High speed most certainly is a human right. The internet is now a necessary feature of everyone’s personal and professional life.

It should be a human right and if governments were smart they would blanket their countries with free high speed for the masses.

Instead we contend with the likes of Verizon and ATT whose profit motives are at odds with the core principles of a free and open internet.

fjabre··on It’s not a zero-sum game for Apple TV+, Netflix, and Disney+
We have lawyers and industry execs to thank for that. They want to squeeze every less penny out of their content across the globe forever. It's ridiculous.
fjabre··on Psilocybin for major depression granted Breakthrough Therapy by FDA
There is no comparison between paranoia from weed and a bad trip from mushrooms/lsd.

One can leave you permanently mentally scarred and the other will make you paranoid for a few hours.

I have stoner friends and lsd/mushroom friends. Some of the latter are still dealing with issues today from a single bad experience from a trip they had years ago. I cannot say the same of my stoner friends.

fjabre··on Psilocybin for major depression granted Breakthrough Therapy by FDA
I have to disagree. While weed certainly can and does induce anxiety on occasion it is no where near as intense as magic mushroom trips. It’s not on the same level.

A mushroom trip can leave you feeling refreshed regardless but if you have a bad trip it may expose you to your deepest and darkest fears and become a terrifying nightmarish experience that weed couldnt induce if you tried.

The horror of a bad a trip didn’t necessarily teach me anything other than to respect mushrooms much more than weed.

I have had friends say the same. There is no comparison of the paranoia from weed vs the absolute horror of a bad trip.

I feel that people who say there is havent really done a lot of either to know the difference.

fjabre··on Psilocybin for major depression granted Breakthrough Therapy by FDA
Check out rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). Brain stimulation has come a long way.
fjabre··on Psilocybin for major depression granted Breakthrough Therapy by FDA
Another new and novel treatment for MDD is called rTMS or repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. Its effects are probably more durable than Magic Mushrooms from the literature, up to a year or more in some cases from a single round of treatment. A quick search in pubmed will bring 1000s of articles on its efficacy.

Any loss for big pharma is a big win for consumers.

fjabre··on When will Google shut down Stadia?
Google’s different brands remind me of MSFT of the early 2000s. No rhyme or reason. More chaos and throwing spaghetti at the wall. No issues changing or deprecating APIs and products like this on a whim.

They certainly dont inspire trust in anything but their flagship brands like Gmail that have been with us for decades.

Even those hard and fast rules leave a lot of room for interpretation hence why many cases are decided in months and years and not days.

Laws change and are updated all the time.

I stand by my original assertion.

Apple with its App store most certainly is a monopoly/oligarch with unchecked power in the mobile space to destroy entire companies on a whim, companies like Uber would be irreparably damaged for example if removed from Apple’s platform. I believe this fact to be self evident and indisputable - Apple clearly has monopolistic power in this space.

fjabre··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
Legal definitions change all the time and laws are updated.

Monopoly means whatever the decision of the high court says it means and that is squared with the legislative.

There are no hard and fast rules in litigation or civil law.

fjabre··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
Out compete Apple? You cant be serious. Unless you have a phone that uses quantum entanglement to communicate at FTL no one is out competing Apple anytime soon.
fjabre··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
I see. So Apple watches, iPads, and iPhones & other devices owning at least half the US market isn't a monopoly whatsoever? When does one qualify to become a monopoly? Must they own 90% of the market to be considered one?

I wonder what would happen if they kicked Uber of the platform.

fjabre··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
Please enlighten me. I would love to hear what your explanation of a monopoly is.
fjabre··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
This 100%. Government needs to get involved. Apple is clearly using its monopolistic power as shield against any kind of accountability. Devs have absolutely no recourse against this monopoly.
fjabre··on Apple has locked me out of my developer account
Ah the joys of being subjected to a dictator's whim. Apple can do as it wants when it wants for any reason it wants to regarding that app you may have poured a year of your life into.

Our profitable SaaS web app has 1000s of paying users and those apps also run very well on mobile safari.

We made a decision a long time ago as a company never to invest in iOS because of Apple's dictator like policies. We may develop a simple tool on iOS but we will never put our flagship apps there.

Apple has made it clear from the beginning that they will not be fair in their dealings with devs and in fact the opposite, they are actively hostile against app devs in many cases such as this one without being accountable to them. It's Apple's way or the highway.

Not only do we have the privilege of paying Apple to develop on their platform (that devs make more valuable to consumers) but we also have the privilege of paying Apple a 30% cut on virtual goods.

I still don't understand why so many devs have given into this. But it probably has something to do with Apple's monopolistic power.

fjabre··on Makers, Don't Let Yourself Be Forced into the 'Manager Schedule'
To play devils advocate: If he was as brilliant as you imply perhaps he SHOULD have been the one making the key decisions under his purview anyway.

This almost sounds like bitterness coming from the other side of the team.

Not everything is a team decision and nor should it be.

Often times brilliant engineers, in order to express that brilliance, need to be left alone by over zealous managers and jealous teammates that would rather argue than get work done.

fjabre··on Meditation reduced an opioid dose needed to ease chronic pain by 75%
> well okay, why won't they?

Have you worked with clinically depressed people?

fjabre··on Meditation reduced an opioid dose needed to ease chronic pain by 75%
Meditation will never gain mass acceptance or practice no matter how many more of these articles we see.

People seem to forget there is a huge percentage of the population that will never meditate or can't meditate due to extenuating circumstances.

While this article is interesting it's not helpful for this subsection of the population.

For them it is far more beneficial to seek alternative therapies like rTMS, tDCS, tACS, and DBS tech, of which meditation is probably a self propelled variant.

It is well known that these technologies have analgesic effects and modulate brain state with desirable outcomes, just like meditation.

They have the added benefit of also being directly applicable to nerve branch areas/PNS in the body itself and not just the brain. So they go beyond meditation and what is possible with meditation.

Yes but they are not all equally bad for you. This is not debatable. Its self evident.

Cigarette smoke is not equal to pure tobacco smoke which is not equal to marijuana smoke.

All these false equivalencies. Its irresponsible and flies in the face of reason.

It is self evident that tobacco smoke and cigarette smoke in particular cause cancer.

You dont have to be in medicine or read pubmed to know this. We have real world examples all over the place.

This gets on my nerves.

There is a HUGE difference between cigarette smoke and weed smoke.

There has never been a study linking marijuana smoke to cancer.
