fizzbatter··on OpenAI is Using Reddit to Teach An Artificial Intelligence How to Speak
I'd totally be willing to discuss the topic, but i'm not sure what i could say to help you _(also, the lack of notifications makes HN a terrible place for this lol)_.

For me, functionality of the assistant was fundamentally difficult. I could think of a dozen things i would like a home assistant to do, but most of them i don't want to program. Things like playing a song of spotify, changing the device spotify is playing on, and etc.

For me, what i was willing to program a bot to do was manage my personal server, take a load off of me. Check for updates, notify me about them, ensure backups are being triggered, etcetc.

At the moment i don't even have a bot though. I've taken many iterations on the literal programmatic API, and still don't have it quite right. I started in Go, and am now sitting in Rust (though not actively working on it). The difficulty, is i want to find a nice way to write a handler for an event. Eg, a web page visit is a single handler for a single event. However a bot response is not a single event. It's a conversation - so i'm trying to figure how to manage the state. This is my biggest point of internal struggle.

Anyway, if given what i've said above you're still interested, feel free to let me know if you'd like to talk more :)

fizzbatter··on Doubt cast on Dash developer's defense against Apple's claim of review fraud
> I like myself better when I believe people, so I'll continue to do that anyway despite logic saying not to.

Well put.

For what it's worth though, i tend to view cases like this with skepticism. I mainly think of it as, why believe PersonA over PersonB - it's a technical decision at that point, not a personal judgement. It's a little more difficult when it's John Doe vs Apple, ie a human vs a corporation, but ultimately i still don't picking sides without hard evidence. He said she saids rarely add up, regardless of guilt.

fizzbatter··on Show HN: Brydge – A brand new professional network
Seems interesting. I'm not a fan of LinkedIn, so this piques my curiosity. I am concerned about the "1:1 relationship" feature though. It seems core to the experience, but personally i'm not sure i will like it, and am hesitant to sign up as a result.

Why? I fear needing to ask meaningful questions, and / or respond with meaningful answers, as a public display of my networking power.

Eg, if i was asked a question about development, maybe with a tool i'm not too familiar with, i now have to go "on record" explaining what little i know about the tool, just to form a relationship i might want. Sure, that person may be most interested in that tool, but i'm sure i can fit "their needs" for many other aspects, just maybe not that one tool, and not at this time.

How permanent are these Q:A things? What if i learn said tool, do i re-answer? What if i want to revise any inaccuracies i post? From the description, this seems more important than a normal forum (eg: Stackoverflow).

I'm probably wrong on the concept, as i have only watched the video, but i figure even if i am wrong it might help explain confusions i took from the video.

fizzbatter··on Decades-Old Mystery Put to Rest: Why Are There X's in the Desert?
I mean, isn't that a bit pedantic? If you go down that route, MAD didn't keep us safe either, it's our enemies belief/knowledge that we had weapons of mass destruction, that kept us safe. etcetcetc

It's all part of it. Without intelligence (from dozens of source) to act upon, and Americas enemies believing we could find meaningful targets and/or hit them, MAD wouldn't really exist. Same goes for not having the tech to launch the nukes. Or a hundred other things.

It all helped, to one degree or another, and that is all they said. "This [X] we're standing on right now helped protect us from nuclear war".

Am i missing your point?

fizzbatter··on Virtualize OS X on Linux
No worries, appreciate what information you could give :)
fizzbatter··on Why does Siri seem so dumb?
I believe they have added ML in the Assistant, along with some new features like context recognition. Granted, it's of course difficult to say how much is shared between Now and Assistant.
fizzbatter··on Why does Siri seem so dumb?
Out of curiosity, is this the the actual "Google Assistant" you're referring to? Or simply Google Now?

I believe there is a difference, but that's purely speculation on my park. I'll be able to test it more in ~2 weeks when my Pixel XL arrives.

fizzbatter··on Virtualize OS X on Linux
> but we used to have to run farms of mac minis because we couldn't have jenkins/bamboo trigger more than one xcode test/build run at a time.

As someone who is interested in OSX testing like this - ie, not arguing with you - would it be possible to have a mac mini use virtualbox with real OSX installations running in parallel?

From what i've heard in this thread, Virtualbox/etc support OSX just fine, on OSX machines. Hypothetically, you could parallel-ize on a single machine via virtualbox, no?

I understand Apple is still making it a PITA though. Not disagreeing, just learning why you were only running a single instance per box. :)

fizzbatter··on Show HN: TagSpaces – An open source personal data manager
I love Camlistore but have been hesitant to use it. They're just doesn't seem to be enough tracking behind it.. if more people were into it, i would be really happy.
fizzbatter··on OpenAI is Using Reddit to Teach An Artificial Intelligence How to Speak
Yup, this is my answer. I'm slowly building an in-house software suite .. because i can, i guess, and a big thing i'm wanting is to tie it all together with a human friendly administrative program.

The main thing stopping me is NLP. Ideally, i want this offline only as i am unsure how much of my life i want to leave my home network.

fizzbatter··on Dear Dash Users – A message to all Dash users from the Kapeli Blog
Weird that i find out about this here - wonder if he's able to send an email to Mac Store purchasers like myself. Regardless, i migrated my license, and all seems to be working now.

Glad the issue didn't impact me too negatively, and i hope this is true for most of his customers.

fizzbatter··on Comcast's 1TB data caps start to roll out nationwide
This is what i've always disliked. I don't mind paying for X data a month - but if i'm going to do that, i want something akin to an SLA.

If they're going to oversell the network[1] and cap my data, what the hell good are they?

Internet is too important to be mis/greedily handled as it currently is. ISPs need to start providing something of an SLA, and we need to start running monitoring tools in user end routers to ensure up time.

[1]: I can only assume this due to speed drops during peak times.

fizzbatter··on TOX – A New Kind of Instant Messaging
> Tox is pure P2P which, in my experience, never works very well on mobile devices.

That's (UX) my biggest concern, honestly. UX is just too important, and it's becoming an increasingly fast moving bar. Simple things like hitting up arrow to edit your message, to more complex things like stickers and gifs, these are (unfortunately) requirements for me in my peer circles.

They sound silly, i know, but Telegram has (mostly) a great UX, and for such an important tool i can't currently give up features.. let alone convince my friends to likewise give up features.

(Fwiw, i love Matrix in design)

fizzbatter··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
Nope. I've never used a case for my phones. I heavily buy my phone for the visual appeal, and small/compact nature. Most cases i quite dislike.
fizzbatter··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
I had that fear after loving my Nexus6 dual speakers for so long, and it can still be nice at times _(mainly for volume level)_, but lately i've just been bluetooth'ing all my music from my Nexus6. The speakers just sound _(mildly!)_ crackly at loud levels, it makes me wonder if they were damaged from my loud playing. So, i guess i'm saying i don't really trust nice built-in speakers for playing music, and am willing to go back to a mono speaker knowing i can just use bluetooth instead.
fizzbatter··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
I love my N6, and if anything i'm afraid the PixelXL will be too small for me. I take comfort in knowing that the N6 can be a bit cumbersome at times.. despite me loving it, so maybe the XL will be perfect.
fizzbatter··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
I wanted to confirm a change of address for a phone order when i was moving, and got a real person on the line very quickly. American (probably) too, which is appreciated. Not knocking foreign support, but when i call Comcast, there is definitely a bit of a language barrier.
fizzbatter··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
I love my Nexus phones, i also have already ordered a Pixel XL. With that said, i hate the look of this phone compared to the Nexus 5 and 5X. I really felt the 5 and 5X were a good, unique and fitting feel for Nexus. The Pixel doesn't seem to have any identity of it's own.

Frankly, with Apple already having sued over phone designs.. i'm shocked this is so blatantly similar to the iPhone.

Only thing that feels unique is that weird glass bit on the back.. and that's ugly as hell imo.

fizzbatter··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
Agreed, i don't want it to do any of that. With that said, there are plenty of things i'd love to be able to use it for. Texting _(via Telegram.. app support, not just SMS!)_, remind/alarm, and information are my main ones.

Currently, i only use it for alarms. I'd love if Assistants became good enough to conversationally text someone.

fizzbatter··on Show HN: SnapPrint – Design your t-shirt in less than a minute
Yea, and i can imagine image quality is a big issue. I want images, but at the same time i'm scared to even use my own, because i don't want just a ugly boxed image. It feels like it would require an artistic hand... which i don't have.

What i love about this app is an unartistic fool like me can make a shirt in a few minutes. So while i want images, i can't imagine what the UX would be like.

Anyway, appreciated!

fizzbatter··on Show HN: SnapPrint – Design your t-shirt in less than a minute
Heads up, i was unable to purchase a shirt, seems /checkout is giving a 500 response:

POST https://snapprint.com/checkout 500 (Internal Server Error)
Note that i also saw no UX changes. No error message on the page, etc.

Hope you get this sorted soon, can't wait to order my shirt :)

fizzbatter··on Show HN: SnapPrint – Design your t-shirt in less than a minute
Appreciate having the premium option. I'm buying a shirt now just for kicks, mainly to test out the quality of the shirt.

If i like the fit/etc, i imagine i'll buy a few more. Thanks! Sidenote: If you can manage this awesome UX for more complex stuff (images? designs? art? w/e), would be really cool.

I'm getting `NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID` when visiting, just fyi. (I didn't go beyond that, fwiw)
fizzbatter··on Defending Against Hackers Took a Back Seat at Yahoo, Insiders Say
I mean, i am not agreeing with Yahoo here... but isn't that a reasonable thing to do?

Every act of securing or ensuring quality has a cost, and there is a line. I think most of us would agree that the line is very broken currently, but it appears you're citing a problem with the line in general, not the location of said line.

Everything has a cost, from a recall to better security to even a human life, the debate should be what we think should be paid, not whether or not we should worry about costs at all.

(If i misunderstood your intent, apologies)

fizzbatter··on Show HN: Qoins – Pay off debt with spare change
This is cool! I wonder what the math on payments looks like for this, my immediate fear is that it's contribution is so small as to almost be not worth the signup. Perhaps put a little simple math showing how this would affect a loan?

By comparison, i've been using Simple to force myself to feel "broke" constantly. I move the majority of my money out of "Safe to Spend" via large goals which daily suck money away. I tend to only have a couple hundred in my "Safe to Spend" pile, and even that is tiny because each day it has to clear the Goal withdraw. If anything, it's mildly stress inducing, but it is apparently very effective mentally for me.

Now, i know the two are very different (both in concept and quantity of money), i mainly make the comparison because the mass saving method i mentioned above is clear on how it will affect my loans/etc. I have no idea how Qoins would affect my loans/etc.

Perhaps i'm a bad audience for this, i don't often make purchases, and therefor i don't often have change floating around. Some rough math for last month means i would be saving somewhere in the range of $5, and for the sake of discussion, $60/y. It would likely be more impressive if i spent a lot, "wasted" a lot of money, bought a lot of coffees/etc. In theory, the worse a person is at saving, the more they would save with Qoins. Perhaps that should be advertised in the video?

Anyway, a lot of rambling that are vaguely resembling thoughts (i blame 4am, bad sleep and only half a cup of morning coffee), hope something meaningful can be taken from it. Congrats on the launch!

fizzbatter··on Principles we use to write CSS for modern browsers
Unfortunately that still leaves out a ton of users. I know that's a tiny percentage, but tiny nonetheless. The shop i'm heading to soon has a small number of clients (<5k, each being very important), but with many using ancient systems. IE8/9 iirc. We use Table layouts for our "old compatible" product, and i don't think we'll ever move on from that. Some clients just refuse to update it seems.

Luckily (for my sanity) we have a "new age" product that we can use responsive layouts for.

fizzbatter··on Having fun with Go's nil, interfaces and errors
Wouldn't that basically be replicating a return value-error approach, in a more cumbersome way though?

You could argue that Go can use Exceptions in the same manner as X lang too, by using panic and recover... but most people seem to not like that.

With Go and Rust, return value error handling is just simply nice. There's no question about if a function might error out, just look at the signature.

Does Udacity offer programs for those lacking _(partially or entirely)_ in the math(s) required for these types of courses? Ie, to bring them up to speed?

I'm not sure if Udacity is even interested in teaching these types of courses, fwiw... though, i know Khan has lots of math courses.
