fixedd··on The Predictions of Robert A. Heinlein
More inefficient than using an engine rated at ~ 25% efficiency to propel thousands of pounds of steel, glass, and plastic to transport a single person?
fixedd··on T-Mobile quietly hardens part of its U.S. cellular network against snooping
The wife and I took a cruise a few years ago and I tried my damnedest to turn off anything even remotely resembling "yes, you can have a data connection". I wanted to leave my phone on in case something happened with the kids (and so I'd have a watch), I just didn't want it to DO anything other than allow incomming calls. Got home to a $200 phone bill because there was a checkbox somewhere I'd missed and cruise-ship mobile data is abhorrently expensive.

It happens.

Will Bible 2.0 still tell us how to treat our slaves and rape victims?
fixedd··on America Is Becoming Less Religious
"A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hopes of reward after death."

— Albert Einstein, "Religion and Science," New York Times Magazine, 1930

A few years back I used the IRS's form to report three local churches for prominently displaying candidate's promotional signs on their property. I also included photographic evidence of said signs, clearly on church property. Anecdotes be anecdotes, but I can personally guarantee that there have been at least three instances where a church has illegally promoted candidates, been reported, and yet maintained their tax-exempt status.

Yet, Android doesn't support SVG.

Any news yet on whether Verizon is going to fumble it as badly as they did the Galaxy Nexus?

There is exactly one provider in my area which is capable of supplying my family's bandwidth requirements.

Most of what you're seeing there is hand-made.

The difference in costs for everything else is similar or worse in rural areas though. For instance, a 32" TV costs the same on Amazon no matter where you live, but when the water company only has 900 customers instead of a few hundred thousand the cost-per-gallon sky rockets.
fixedd··on Made in America, Again
A one hour commute could easily cost ~ 5k/yr in fuel alone (50 weeks * 5 days * $3/gal fuel * (60miles / 20mpg)), instantly cutting that increase from 30k to 40k in half.

Do we know yet that they're moderating the missions?
fixedd··on Google's mobile game Ingress enables players to create user-generated missions
Don't know how long it's been since you played, but there are a LOT more people playing now than even around the new year. The biggest difference to me is that L7 and 8 aren't that hard to achieve any more. I've seen people go from first login to L8 in a week, or so. Back when I hit 8 it took months of regular, dedicated work.

Screw those guys for trying to recoup some of the millions of dollars they've spent building the game, right?

One of these "cards" was exactly what put DirecTv on my "don't do business with" list.

Also, you can (once again) use the keyboard for almost everything. Want to open an app? Press super and start typing it's name!

I'm 100% in agreement with you here. Gnome 3 was/is, to me, the only desktop I can stand to use anymore. I will agree with OP's complaint about alt-tab though... I had to install [Coverflow Alt-Tab|https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/97/coverflow-alt-tab/].

I just wish someone could tell me one I could buy that would last longer than 1.5 years in my laptop. I'm on #3 now :(

Agreed. I lived in the Pacific Northwest for about 7 years and I used AC maybe twice. Now, living back in the Southeastern US, it stays on for months at a time.

fixedd··on Amazon has sold no more than 35,000 Fire phones, data suggests
Our purchase of the first-gen Kindle Fires convinced my wife and myself not to buy any further iterations. There are 9 tablets in our house... guess which two haven't been powered on in the past year.
fixedd··on Amazon has sold no more than 35,000 Fire phones, data suggests
The Kindle was a super nice device (to me) and in the days before tablet-ubiquity I'd see them everywhere. I'd never cared for the UX of ebooks until I got one, now I can't stand dead-trees. The Kindle Fire, on the other hand... I wish I'd never ordered the ones my wife and I own. Most expensive paperweights we have.
fixedd··on Scheduling Technology Leaves Low-Income Parents With Hours of Chaos
>Maria Trisler is often dismissed early from her shifts at a McDonald’s in Peoria, Ill., when the computers say sales are slow. The same sometimes happens to Ms. Navarro at Starbucks.

I haven't been effected by this sort of thing in years, but I've always felt that they should have to pay you for hours they schedule you, whether they use you or not.

It's always been legal (in the US) as long as they tell you when they WILL ship (or within 30 days, if no timeframe is promised). It's against the merchant contract with most (all?) major credit card providers though.
