fitzwatermellow··on Interview with Scott Aaronson
What constitutes a "good return" on research dollars spent? Is it mere value created? Or a breakthrough in fundamental human understanding? I'm actually quite intrigued now to mine some real data!
fitzwatermellow··on Interview with Scott Aaronson
News to me that he is moving to UTexas in Austin to build a center for quantum computing and theory. Terribly exciting! With the impetus being a state funded allocation of $4B+ for basic research. It really begs the question: are our governments spending way too little on moon shots? And what could have been accomplished in the last two generations if the focus had been on pure science rather than military technologies?

fitzwatermellow··on Apply HN: Lenzy – affordable photographers guaranteed to suit you, booked in 50s
Lots of nascent demand for pro photo services. Culture is becoming visual on an unprecedented scale. Two quick queries:

1. How quickly do you think you could scale this globally? Customer requests a shoot on a volcano in Greenland for example ;)

2. Why not provide a full service solution? That is not just the photographer, but for a fashion brand shoot for example, all the models, hair, makeup, location, catering, legal clearances and the other 100 things I am not anticipating ;)

fitzwatermellow··on Apply HN: Wantobuy – Post items you want so sellers can sell them to you
I like it too! Streetware, fashion: its like the new liquid asset right now. The part where buyers can "bid" on price is particularly compelling. I'd also like to see the "sell" side of the interface: in other words the data you are going to present to retailers and brands since ultimately they are the ones you will be selling this product to ;)
fitzwatermellow··on Apply HN: Wanderlust – Travel recommendations based on your budget and interests
Good idea to focus on the European market first. So jealous when I hear my EU friends talking about day trips to eat at a new restaurant in Copenhagen, or a long weekend in Istanbul or Corfu ;)

There's also tons of stuff on Internet Archive, including, just in time for Easter, Asimov's Guide to the Bible ;)

I love the opening sentence of "Lastborn" from Galaxy Magazine 1958:

Edith Fellowes smoothed her working smock as she always did before opening the elaborately locked door and stepping across the dividing line between the "is" and the "is not"

fitzwatermellow··on FingerIO: Using Active Sonar for Fine-Grained Finger Tracking
This is cool. Thinking about smartphones as sensors opens up so many possibilities, even if their capabilities aren't nearly as accurate as dedicated devices. Wondering if the sonar information can be combined with images from the camera to create a close-range depth camera?

fitzwatermellow··on Ask HN: Where do you save your ideas?
Plain text files written using Vim in a Terminal. Then archived by folder to Google Drive or DropBox. I want them to be in a format I, and any machine, can read N years from now. I've been burned before by proprietary solutions ;)

I revisit old files at odd intervals. I have ~5 years worth of notes. What I love most is when I think I have a new idea, or stumbled upon original inspiration, and I find an almost exact sentiment mirrored years ago, albeit using different language. Then I know I've revealed some deep truth that will remain constant for me, and it is only my manner of expressing it that has evolved!

fitzwatermellow··on Kanye West caught using Pirate Bay to download music software
Yes, I'm beginning to think Serum is quite an incredible deal at $190 retail ;)

Thanks for the thoughtful reply and timeless wisdom that seems to apply not just to music, but life as well ;)
fitzwatermellow··on Nanex Gets $700k Whistleblower Award from SEC
Congrats on being rewarded and recognized for the very important work you do in bringing transparency to the financial markets. The whole story of how this went down is just epic!

My question is about the business side of Nanex. Are sales of your products such as NxCore enough to sustain the company? Do you also actively trade? And what opportunities do you see currently around data science and machine learning for entrepreneurs in the quantitative finance world?

fitzwatermellow··on Kanye West caught using Pirate Bay to download music software
Hate to hijack what I am sure is a mind expanding discussion on software distribution, the law of karma, and modern celebrity. But I am curious about something and was hoping to get an opinion from some of the music production experts on here. Of which there appear to be legion. Which is awesome :)

How difficult is it to duplicate Serum-esque wavetable generation using ChucK or CSound? It seems in my uninformed opinion you would have a lot more freedom using raw math over visual gui. Do you have the same range of available osc's and filters as you have in commercial packages? Or would they be relatively easy to implement if missing out of the box?

fitzwatermellow··on What Google Learned from Its Quest to Build the Perfect Team
There is a concept in Japanese culture, Wa (和), or "group harmony" that seems to nicely complement ruminations on "collective intelligence". Perhaps most interesting is how fragile the cohesion really is, a single person, a single sentiment expressed poorly even, is enough to break the spell.

fitzwatermellow··on How Stoical Was Seneca? (2014)
For those interested in exploring stoicism in the Eastern tradition, consider delving into the unswayable ethos of Chinese philosopher Master Zhuang. Pre-dating Senaca by 4 centuries, Zhaungzi was perhaps not as inclined to view the passions so negatively. Arising as Univ. of Toronto Prof. David Machek argues, from differing world views: "rational versus non-rational in the Greco-Roman tradition, and artificial versus natural in the Chinese"

fitzwatermellow··on Ask HN: Open problems in finance?
While your interest is in fintech, do take a look at the forces shaping the broader global macro economic environment because you can literally see some of these "open questions" playing out in real-time!

List of Unsolved Problems in Econ:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unsolved_problems_in_e...

What happens when central bankers run out of ammo and realize monetary policy may not be an ideal path to fiscal stimulus? Or having the bright idea of devaluing your currency to depreciate your outstanding liabilities results in a mutually assured destruction scenario when every sovereign on earth implements the same idea simultaneously? And when "too-big-to-fail" entities amass derivative exposure that is 100X global GDP does it become time to panic yet?

But still its innovations like ZeroCoin and SmartContracts that give one hope that out of the rubble, creative solutions will arise. As long as they are grounded in economic reality and not fantasy, humanity will abide...
