fisherjeff··on Amazon Is in Talks to Offer Free Mobile Service to US Prime Members
I love it. Just keep jamming more random stuff in there and periodically saying, “you know, we give you so many amazing benefits that we just have no choice but to raise the membership fee again!”
fisherjeff··on Presence of nicotine and antidepressants detected in Antarctic waters
Per the great Wikipedia, “In 2020, [diclofenac] was the 72nd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 9 million prescriptions.”

fisherjeff··on Ask HN: Who got hired from HN?
Sample size of one, obviously, but back when I was in a position to hire I absolutely checked those threads each month and reached out to people that seemed like good matches. Never got any responses that I can recall, though…
fisherjeff··on Waste coffee husk turned into a wonder material key to mitigating climate change
This is exactly the “drinking more coffee will save the planet” article I have been waiting for
fisherjeff··on CheerpJ 3.0: a JVM replacement in HTML5 and WASM to run Java on modern browsers
I can only assume this means the inevitable end of Electron apps, now that running Eclipse is possible in the browser
fisherjeff··on Google appears to be scaling up the ads it shows to Gmail users
Yes, but even then there’s a good chance your bank will impose covenants on you that are not necessarily aligned with your own goals.
fisherjeff··on VW to fire top executives at software unit Cariad, source says
Well by “basically happy”, I mean to say that there are some occasional little quirks that I don’t love but I’ve personally never had any major frustrations or showstoppers.
fisherjeff··on Google appears to be scaling up the ads it shows to Gmail users
You can only comfortably say that if all of your co-investors are on board (or you have none - unlikely in Google’s case) and if you will never need to raise any additional capital for any reason. It’s very difficult to run a modern business, especially in tech, without being beholden to anyone.
fisherjeff··on VW to fire top executives at software unit Cariad, source says
Yeah I’ve owned VWs for years and have always been basically happy with the cars’ software. We recently bought an EV, and even though the ID.4 checked pretty much all of our boxes, we skipped it entirely based on the steady drumbeat of software complaints.
fisherjeff··on Bank Failures Visualized
I think an overlooked issue here is that, beginning in 2020, SVB suddenly had tons of deposits. Yields all around were zero-ish and they had money burning holes in their pockets. I can sorta see how they could be incentivized to close some loans.

Also, I think that as with FRC, their loans tended to have fairly low credit risk, so again not super sketchy, just poorly hedged.

fisherjeff··on Bank Failures Visualized
Oh absolutely. My point was just that if you truly wanted to make a big risky bet, you would definitely not be going out and buying a bunch of agency bonds.
fisherjeff··on Bank Failures Visualized
SVB and FRC did not “leverage themselves on risky speculation bets.” They made lots of very safe investments but did not adequately hedge against large and rapid rate increases. Also not good but it’s a big difference, IMO.
fisherjeff··on The Struggle to Make Lab-Grown Meat
Other industrially processed foods don’t live in the uncanny valley of meat. I know garden burgers and the like are produced in basically a lab but I still enjoy them. Impossible burgers and Tofurky skeeve me out.

Not a vegetarian FWIW.

fisherjeff··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
I think you may have that backwards but yes. You are effectively always paying for expenses incurred 2.5 years ago.

EDIT: Nevermind, you had it the right way.

fisherjeff··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
Also, to be clear, it will eventually stack up and roughly even out as you amortize 1/5 of each of 5 years’ worth of R&D spend per year. Basically the part that sucks is that there was no 4-year phase-in period.
fisherjeff··on Making friends as an adult is hard (2021)
I don’t think they were saying that the 1:1 time itself was a chore, so much as the logistics behind them. I completely agree.

Another nice thing about group hangouts is that not everyone needs to be there so it makes scheduling a lot simpler.

fisherjeff··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
Vendors aren’t allowed to charge higher prices than at their off-airport locations, for one.

fisherjeff··on Chasing Rainbows: Designing for Colorblindness
This is the best visualization of colorblindness I’ve ever come across.

Interestingly, my ability to distinguish between the images depends very heavily on the brightness (and, on iOS, Night Shift and True Tone) of my screen. Outdoors earlier today the two leaves were identical. Now, with brightness down and Night Shift on, it’s impossible not to see the huge difference.

fisherjeff··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
Oh absolutely – it just does not extend to every single taxpayer.
fisherjeff··on 60M Americans have taxes so simple the IRS could do them automatically
I am not corrupt and I say otherwise. The US tax code has a massive amount of complexity and tons of corner cases and grey areas. I wish that were not the case but politics being politics, here we are.
fisherjeff··on Frank founder allegedly defrauded JPMorgan out of $175M hit with federal charges
Not to mention, if you really did have a mailing list that was effectively worth $175m, why would you give the whole thing to anybody before you get paid?
fisherjeff··on Frank founder allegedly defrauded JPMorgan out of $175M hit with federal charges
I mean from what I understand, they did peek at the “real data”, it’s just that it was convincingly fabricated.
fisherjeff··on In 2017, developers competed for who could create worst volume control interface
Same exact experience here
fisherjeff··on Teen-age fentanyl deaths in a Texas county
Wait, fentanyl testing strips are illegal in Texas? What?
fisherjeff··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
If you zoom in on the chart, you can see that the peak and subsequent sharp decline is right at the point where rates started to rise last spring.
fisherjeff··on Gordon Moore has died
Weird how this works sometimes… I was just at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the first time today, saw the name on the auditorium and thought “that Gordon (and Betty) Moore?”

Truly an incredible place, and thanks in very large part to the Moores. RIP Gordon.

fisherjeff··on The venture capitalist's dilemma
One interesting aspect to me: If you extend the dilemma to N prisoners, and one prisoner starts shouting from the rooftops that he’s starting to rat people out, it does seem rational to immediately start doing the same.

Like, once you know the Founders Fund companies are rushing to pull their cash, yeah you should maybe start thinking about getting out too, before you’re the only uninsured depositor left.

fisherjeff··on Do Kwon arrested in Montenegro: Interior Minister
I mean to be fair, if you’re going to do a Ponzi, you better make sure it pays you at least a billion dollars because you are definitely going to (a) be unable to access some probably very large portion of it, and (b) have to go completely off the grid. If your Ponzi pays out like 100k, you’re going straight to jail.

Ah man, I misremembered the name of the Lenny chatbot[0] and thought based on the URL that someone had created, like, a ChatGPT version him. Oh well.
