firloop··on NextDNS Is Out of Beta
Signed up for a year as soon as I got the email announcement. Love NextDNS and excited to see where they go — particularly would love some sort of time-based scheduling or API for rule automations.

firloop··on Georgism
A great essay on Georgism:

“Georgism is an accelerationism, as it attempts to unchain capital—not from the restraints of humanity, but those of land, which eats cake in the stands as it watches capital and labor fight over crumbs.”

firloop··on Facebook to Buy Giphy for $400M
>Imagine sharing a gif in Signal and still being tracked by Facebook because every person that loads it needs to first download it from FB servers.

Signal's integration is specifically engineered to _not_ do this: https://signal.org/blog/signal-and-giphy-update/

firloop··on Deno 1.0
For the uninitiated, worth noting that one of the names on this post, Ryan Dahl, was the original node.js developer.
firloop··on React Native for Windows and Mac
Performance is just one reason companies adapt something like React Native, the ability to have web developers* come in and string native-quality components together is another. React Native can feel better than mobile web and have access to lower level APIs.

* I think this is more of a selling point than a reality. I think in practice, to make a React Native feel and work well requires native platform knowledge.

firloop··on The Secret Lives of Fungi
I found myself not liking the film very much, despite finding parts of it educational and illuminating.

Particularly, I found it really bizarre that it discusses the stoned ape theory without mentioning any of the criticism or prevailing theories against it. The movie just passes it (and most other things Stamets believes) along as unchallenged gospel.

It took me out of it and made the film feel (even more) ideologically one-sided, despite the fact that the film is full of interesting detail otherwise.

firloop··on A struggling Rust Belt city pinned its revival on a self-chilling beverage can
That contains all of the info linked above, but not the actual HBS case study.

I am similarly curious! The only thing I could find is this paywalled link: https://www.coursehero.com/file/p49pacr/Mitchell-was-able-to...
firloop··on Facebook iOS SDK Remotely Crashing Spotify, TikTok, Pinterest, Winno and More
I block all Facebook domains with the NextDNS iOS app — didn't seem to be affected by this. Blocking spyware has its perks.

firloop··on Show HN: A syntax highlighter for Git and diff output, written in Rust
Anyone know how to get this working with vim-fugitive? https://github.com/tpope/vim-fugitive
firloop··on An audio app that has consumed my life
Why? The products aren't similar.
firloop··on Show HN: I made a macOS app to let me draw on the screen while on video calls
How does this fare with the Apple Pencil via Sidecar? Would definitely try this out if it works well.
firloop··on Show HN: Osapy - an API proxy to visualize HTTP request for debugging
Today I use ngrok for this and it works brilliantly:

    $ ngrok http https://myapp
and then I can point my clients at <random domain>.ngrok.io and inspect the request contents locally. How does this compare to that?
firloop··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours?
Here's a couple (albeit macOS focused) favorites of mine:

- Deliveries: macOS / iOS package tracking https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/deliveries-a-package-tracker...

- Screenotate: OCR all of your screenshots with metadata like program/webpage https://screenotate.com

- The Tagger: lightweight macOS utility to tag music / fetch metadata from discogs https://deadbeatsw.com/thetagger/

- youtube-dl: Download any video / song online https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/

It was fun thinking of these, I actually put together a blog post a while back listing my favorite software. Would love to revisit it soon: https://lukemil.es/blog/software-i-like

firloop··on GitHub shuts off access to Aurelia repository, citing trade sanctions
This is pure speculation, but it seems that GitHub's ownership by Microsoft causes them to be significantly more strict with the types of content that they are comfortable hosting. Expect this to continue as they expand up and down the stack; once their npm acquisition closes you'll see this there too.

I think this should be a wake-up call to anyone staking their open source project on GitHub — if I let someone from a US sanctioned country contribute to my repo will I be banned? Hopefully mindshare moves to alternatives in due time.

firloop··on Time Machine in macOS 10.15.3 is very slow on first full backup
I’ve had issues with Time Machine in the past but have been pretty happy to date with Arq and Backblaze B2. Eventually want to configure it to use a local NAS as well.
firloop··on Michael Barbaro and the success of “The Daily”
I felt similarly about The Daily. I started listening to NPR's "Up First" podcast and like it a lot better; it's quite similar but less dramatized and personality-driven.
firloop··on Apple News No Longer Supports RSS
For the link hijacking, it's worth noting that Apple News only exists/is pre-installed in a handful of markets and is uninstallable. But yeah, baffling.
firloop··on Hammerspoon – macOS automation with Lua
Don't use Hammerspoon, but I've managed to create `sudo killall` keybindings with skhd by wrapping AppleScript.

    cmd + shift - 9 : /usr/bin/osascript -e 'do shell script "killall coreaudiod 2>&1" with administrator privileges'
Here's the relevant line from my skhd configuration. This does pop a password prompt, but it works. I imagine you could adapt this to fit Hammerspoon.
firloop··on Pika – A JavaScript package registry for the modern web
Their about page[0] is interesting.

> "Pika is building a world where third-party libraries can be loaded, cached, and shared across sites" ... "With ESM and cross-origin caching, we can create a world where sites can share cached dependencies."

This is an interesting angle on a package registry. The goal seems difficult to achieve as well since the common web cache as we know it is dying[1]. It seems like we'd need some sort of "dependency" support for web browsers if we'd ever want to achieve it.

firloop··on Apple will soon treat online web tracking the same as a security vulnerability
This could probably work, but remember that there’s a lot of tracking that happens by programmatic ad exchanges. To get a sense of this, look at the dozens of sites in a media company’s ads.txt, e.g. https://cnn.com/ads.txt

A big player like Facebook could ask media companies to set up fb.cnn.com or similar, but I imagine this is where we start to enter “security vulnerability” territory, where Apple uses different heuristics to ban this approach.

firloop··on How Spotify and Discover Weekly Earn Me $400/month
This is an interesting point. Netflix has survived multiple price increases over the years, but they offer content that isn't available anywhere else. I think what will probably happen is one music streaming service will raise prices and the others will eventually follow.
firloop··on Patreon ups its revenue cut, but grandfathers in old creators
Patreon also hosts mp3s and provides RSS feeds for podcasters, whom of which are among some of their largest users. It wouldn’t be inconceivable for them to start hosting video content.
firloop··on Did Strava copy its mobile route builder from another app?
Surprisingly enough, when Instagram copied Snapchat's stories feature, they credited Snapchat.

firloop··on Where do Google's flaky tests come from?
