fireflash38··on Uv is the best thing to happen to the Python ecosystem in a decade
Unless I'm an AI, I'm pretty sure "uv run" is the same number of characters as "python". So it's shorter. Also venvs are a translation layer already, changing path.
fireflash38··on OpenAI says over a million people talk to ChatGPT about suicide weekly
Do you think that it's free and available to anyone means it doesn't have any responsibility to users? Or have any responsibility for how it's used, or what it says?
fireflash38··on A definition of AGI
I'd argue the biggest issue with concretely defining intelligence is that any attempts end up falling in two buckets:

1. "Too" Broad, which raises uncomfortable questions about non-human intelligence and how we as humans treat them (see: whales, elephants, octopuses/cephalopods)

2. Too narrow, which again raises very uncomfortable issues about who and who does not qualify as human, and what we do with them.

Put in other words, it's more an issue of ethics and morals than it is definitional.

Fzf has saved me so much time over the years. It's so good.
fireflash38··on A competitor crippled a $23.5M bootcamp by becoming a Reddit moderator
You don't have to be a moderator to poison the well.

Post a shitload of bad faith attacks and slander. Not as a root comment. You don't have to actually relate to the parent at all, you're just trying to get your talking points out there. If someone calls you out? Gish gallop never actually addressing their comments. It's another opportunity for you to spew whatever bullshit you want.

If they follow you around and get more engagement/up votes? Block them. Now you are free to continue to post whatever BS you want without any of those pesky fact checkers.

It makes me wish for legislation to force companies to either

1. Provide security LTS for critical software as-purchased. If you bought Win 7, you get it. No forced upgrades.

Or

2. Force release of source code if not providing LTS. You don't want to support it fine. But don't block people from what they bought.

Pipe dream and wildly expensive to corps but hey they don't give a shit about us anyway.

fireflash38··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
It's crazy they don't even have a toast sort of notification for checking a box. Some visual flair to let a user know "this was successful"

I think they forgot what people actually use the start menu for: accessing things not immediately available on desktop/taskbar. People don't use it to explore/play around. They're looking for something.

So of course they figure they can insert ads for their own shit, make it a Bing website search, whatever. People don't want fucking an internet search. They're looking for things on their computer.

Because they are in the second stage of enshittification. You as a user of their products are not their primary customer - they want to sell your data. Companies buying that data are now their primary customer, so they will prioritize them over you.
fireflash38··on How did Renaissance fairs begin?
I went down a rabbit hole on Wikipedia about turkeys. Am I understanding it correctly in that turkeys went from South America to Europe then to North America?

So it's native to the new world, but not native to North America?

Anyway, 1500s is when they came to Europe, so maybe they did enjoy a good turkey leg...

fireflash38··on Thoughts on Mechanical Keyboards and the ZSA Moonlander
Agreed. I had wrist pain when I played a lot of WoW - rogue, especially outlaw, is not kind to the hands.

I solved it in a couple of ways:

1. Quit wow

2. Rock climbing. Get stronger, especially forearm and finger strength. I can't emphasize enough how much this helps over even carpal tunnel braces or whatever. The biggest single thing that stopped wrist pain.

fireflash38··on Why haven't local-first apps become popular?
Or they save as soon as they launch, so no matter what local is newer and you'll lose whatever was on remote.
fireflash38··on Internal emails reveal Ticketmaster helped scalpers jack up prices, FTC says
It's a logarithmic curve, but if you go too far along it in either direction all the curve breaks because you pissed off a bunch of people.
fireflash38··on Configuration files are user interfaces
This is what I have been debating using for a project at work. You can also nest messages within other messages easily with protobuf so you can aggregate/deaggregate configs as you want. Combined with protobuf validation plugins for your Lang and you get a rather neat package.
fireflash38··on React is winning by default and slowing innovation
That's a thought terminating cliche.

You aren't arguing on merits. You're arguing on everything else. Why aren't we all still using C? Or B? Why isn't every website on good old PHP?

Things change because people want better or different. Saying "people already use it" is not an argument for something.

fireflash38··on Betty Crocker broke recipes by shrinking boxes
For casual bakers, exact precision using grams can help... Or it might not matter at all. You'd need to have everything else be as precise for it to matter. Are you weighing your eggs? Do you adjust based on the humidity of the air? Do you know all of the hot spots in your oven and is the thermometer accurate?

It's science, but ya gotta realize you arent baking a sphere in a vacuum ya know?

At least a gram is a gram is a gram everywhere in the world!

fireflash38··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
Because board members are all emperors too, and they have a stated interest in keeping emperors in power. Look at how many board members are C-suite in other companies.
fireflash38··on The worst possible antitrust outcome
Ah yes we're held hostage by the rich. Do what we say, or we take our ball and go home.
fireflash38··on Cognitive load is what matters
It's not helped by the "jump every 2 years for 20-50% pay bump". They don't have to deal with their own architectural decisions.
fireflash38··on That boolean should probably be something else
It amazes me the contortions that Golang devs (me included) go through to get something approaching the keyword arguments from python.

It's honestly what I miss the most about python: keyword args, keyword-only args, positional-only args.

What I don't miss is the unholy abomination of *kwargs...

And if we didn't have these pesky regulations, we could have our burning rivers back! Those bastards took away our perfect asbestos too. The children yearn for the coal mines.

Businesses can, will, and have hurt people and trampled people's rights in the pursuit of money.

fireflash38··on A teen was suicidal. ChatGPT was the friend he confided in
Are you proposing parents have complete control over everything teenagers do?
fireflash38··on A teen was suicidal. ChatGPT was the friend he confided in
Why do you think they specifically cut the quote there? To mislead.
fireflash38··on A teen was suicidal. ChatGPT was the friend he confided in
Classic. Blame the family. Diffuse responsibility. Same exact shit with social media: it's not our fault we made this thing to be as addictive as possible. It's your fault for using it. It's your moral failing, not ours.
fireflash38··on A German ISP changed their DNS to block my website
The irony of freedom of speech, much like democracy in general, is that it can destroy itself.
fireflash38··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected (2021)
Even just makefiles have 'caching', provided you set dependencies and output correctly.

A good makefile is really nice to use. Not nice to read or trace unfortunately though.

fireflash38··on I prefer human-readable file formats
That's still an issue with binary files too, and you can't even look at them to fix.
