fireflash38··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
A lot of valuable information lived/lives in email threads that might or might not be publicly archived.
fireflash38··on Total monthly number of StackOverflow questions over time
When you see AI giving you back various coding snippets almost verbatim from SO, it really makes you wonder what will happen in the future with AI when it can't depend on actual humans doing the work first.
fireflash38··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
I'm fairly certain that there's a large segment of the population who would deeply dislike that rationale, especially if it's applied consistently to all past actions (cough slavery)
fireflash38··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
A new cold war effectively, but with the goal of cementing local power.
fireflash38··on Stranger Things creator says turn off “garbage” settings
Movies are just as bad with the editing. They're way too fucking long.

Wake up dead man? I feel like 30-45m could be cut and it'd be good. Why is One Battle after another almost 3 hours?

Is there a competition to try to beat the notoriously long Lord of the Rings Extended edition in runtime?

fireflash38··on Go away Python
Gtk makes that simple python program way more complex since it'll need more than pure-python dependencies.

It's really a huge pain point in python. Pure python dependencies are amazingly easy to use, but there's a lot of packages that depend on either c extensions that need to be built or have OS dependencies. It's gotten better with wheels and manylinux builds, but you can still shoot your foot off pretty easily.

fireflash38··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
How long ago were you having issues? That was changed in go 1.13.
fireflash38··on Scaling Go Testing with Contract and Scenario Mocks
I'm of the opinion that mocks should be provided by the thing that you're mocking. That is, if you are wanting to mock out a service, the mock should be owned by the service that is being mocked.

And then it should be part of that service's test suite, to verify it's own mock.

You update your service? Then you must update the mock.

I guess that's more of a fake, but the naming doesn't matter as much as the behavior.

fireflash38··on 2026 Apple introducing more ads to increase opportunity in search results
For now. With Google blocking ad block ability on their browsers, what's to stop them from blocking ad blockers in their OS?
fireflash38··on Property-Based Testing Caught a Security Bug I Never Would Have Found
Don't forget you can use AI to turn a 50 word blog post into a 2,000 word one!
fireflash38··on AWS CEO says replacing junior devs with AI is 'one of the dumbest ideas'
The problem isn't that AI makes obtuse documentation usable. It's that it makes good documentation unread.

There's a lot of good documentation where you learn more about the context of how or why something is done a certain way.

fireflash38··on Secret Documents Show Pepsi and Walmart Colluded to Raise Food Prices
It's why the 3 branches of government worked so well for the US for so long. They each want to protect themselves, and are effectively at odds with each other unless there is almost universal agreement on something.

However that has completely fallen apart with a toothless Congress, and a executive branch that can stack the 3rd branch with similar minded idealogues.

fireflash38··on Children with cancer scammed out of millions fundraised for their treatment
There's money to be made on arbitration of orphan crushing! If I don't do it someone else will.
fireflash38··on French supermarket's Christmas advert is worldwide hit (without AI) [video]
CGI is still bad tbh. Look at all the boring stuff produced for Marvel.
fireflash38··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
Interesting. I don't know if you intended it, but algorithm free means no recommendations to me - even no recommended videos alongside existing videos. You want a video? You have to search for something.

I think that is a surprisingly good solution. You can still access educational information, or really whatever videos you want, but you have to actively seek them out rather than ingest whatever is spit out at you.

fireflash38··on Israel used Palantir technologies in pager attack in Lebanon
There are indeed actors who only respect might. That is not universal. Preaching might is right is also not universal.

It is still important to have might even if you aren't in that camp because inevitably you will run into people with that worldview and they cannot be reasoned with without might.

fireflash38··on Icons in Menus Everywhere – Send Help
When only some things have icons, it's almost like a flag that these things are more special/useful/used. I think that is by far more useful than everything having an icon that you have to think about (or see the text next to it) to understand
fireflash38··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
Modern streaming is the same thing, except it's hidden under the illusion of choice.
fireflash38··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
If you're using Firefox or run Linux, you won't be getting the stream quality you have paid for.
fireflash38··on Google Antigravity just deleted the contents of whole drive
AI does the exact same thing in my experience. First try is not right. Nor the second. If you're lucky the third might.

At that point I'd rather look at SO

fireflash38··on Netflix kills casting from its mobile app to most modern TVs
That's also rather shit, unless you're using a prescribed browser and operating system.

We've rebuilt cable boxes, but somehow they're even shittier than before.

fireflash38··on Google Antigravity just deleted the contents of whole drive
AI pulls its answers from stack overflow.

What will happen when SO is gone? When the problems go beyond the corpus the AI was trained on?

fireflash38··on Search tool that only returns content created before ChatGPT's public release
AI reminds me of combing through stackoverflow answers. The first one might work... Or it might not. Try again, find a different SO problem and answer. Maybe third times the charm...

Except it's all via the chat bot and it isn't as easy to get it to move off of a broken solution.

fireflash38··on I don't care how well your "AI" works
My experience with using AI is that it's a glorified stack overflow copy paster. It'll even glue a handful of SO answers together!

But then you run into classic SO problems... Like the first solution doesn't work. Nor the second one. And the third one introduces a completely different coding style. The last one is implemented in pure sh/GNU utils.

One thing it is absolutely amazing at: digesting things that have bad documentation, like openssl C api. Even then you still gotta be on the watch for hallucinations, and audit it very thoroughly.

fireflash38··on Report: Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO 'as soon as next year'
Are you saying this like it's a good thing? Cause Altman is representative of everything wrong with SV.
fireflash38··on Report: Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO 'as soon as next year'
Other commenters are raking Apple over the coals for bad experiences with MacOS. By the same token, Windows 11 is beyond awful. It's a complete buggy mess, never mind the secure boot restrictions.
fireflash38··on Lawmakers want to ban VPNs
Don't forget they will brand anything they don't like as porn/bad for children. Like gay people daring to exist.
fireflash38··on Fighting the New York Times' invasion of user privacy
I really should take the "invest in companies you hate" advice seriously.
fireflash38··on Time to start de-Appling
The government chemically castrated him. Is that not bad enough?
fireflash38··on How OpenAI uses complex and circular deals to fuel its multibillion-dollar rise
Is that not fraud?
