finid··on USA Facts – Federal, state, and local data from government sources
You knew where he was headed with his comments, and thanks for countering with stats he should have looked at.
finid··on Do Not use namecheap.com for any large site or important domain
I think they were just been paranoid about potential legal penalties, so take it easy.
finid··on Do Not use namecheap.com for any large site or important domain
I've never had any problem with Namecheap, but then I use them only as a domain registrar. I host my servers on DigitalOcean. That means I'm responsible for my servers, buy that's how I like it.
finid··on Microsoft fixed security gaps allegedly used by spies a month before they leaked
Likely because the gaps were coded in at the request of said spies.
finid··on Leak Suggests NSA Was Deep in Middle East Banking System
I wonder what would have happened if that level of connection had been made between 9/11 and the Iranian govt...
finid··on Leak Suggests NSA Was Deep in Middle East Banking System
and given how things like 9/11 were funded...

I must be missing something. How was 9/11 funded?

finid··on Kazakhstan spells out plans for alphabet swap
Hmm, they better start learning Chinese too...
finid··on Guide to Italian Bakeries
Yes, the common usage in America, because the article is about Italian restaurants in an American city.
finid··on Guide to Italian Bakeries
This is actually the common usage. I've never heard anybody say they're going out to an American-Italian restaurant.

Along the same lines, when I tell my friends that I'm going to a Chinese restaurant, they know exactly what I mean. And no, it doesn't mean I'm taking the next flight out to Shanghai to eat.

finid··on The vision of nuclear holocaust in Threads (1984) remains visceral and urgent
Only the most patriotic Americans believe that lie. Is anybody in Poland worried about Iran launching missiles their way?

I don't think so!

finid··on Monsanto Weed Killer Roundup Faces New Doubts on Safety in Unsealed Documents
This is like a judge (or a jury member) accepting a bribe from a prosecutor or a defense attorney. That's illegal.
finid··on Monsanto Weed Killer Roundup Faces New Doubts on Safety in Unsealed Documents
“We would be keeping the cost down by us doing the writing and they would just edit & sign their names so to speak,” Mr. Heydens wrote, citing a previous instance in which he said the company had done this.

Science for sale.

Shouldn't that Mr. Rowland guy be in jail?

finid··on The vision of nuclear holocaust in Threads (1984) remains visceral and urgent
Most people don't even realize that just about the same conditions led Japan to attack during WWII. There comes a time when you keep pushing a guy, and he says, enough! No mas!
finid··on The vision of nuclear holocaust in Threads (1984) remains visceral and urgent
Actually because of the restraint Russia has been showing in the last few years, I hold their leadership in very high regard.
finid··on The vision of nuclear holocaust in Threads (1984) remains visceral and urgent
With the US finding any way to tease Russia into attacking first, intentional war is just as likely now as an accidental one.
finid··on In Search of Zoroastrian Manuscripts in Iran
What about the part where men and women are forbidden from even shaken hands in public?
finid··on Autodraw – Fast Drawing for Everyone
With Autodraw, there's nothing to download, nothing to install...

An installation one would be nice, though.

finid··on AIGrant: Get $5,000 for your open source AI project
Mind doing the same for hardware projects using an open source OS?

A pal I know could use half of that just to set up the legal structure of his outfit.

finid··on Why Slack is inappropriate for open source communications
I don't even bother logging out, ever. I just have them open in different tabs.

Imagine having about 7 tabs open. By the time I'm finished with the last tab, something new has come up on the first tab I checked. Huge waste of time. I'm trying to wean myself from all these services, but it's not easy.

This or that project is on GitHub, but join the developers on Slack. And I hate Slack.

finid··on Alternative search engines to Google (2016)
Stopped using Google a while back. Used https://www.startpage.com for years. Just switched to https://www.qwant.com late last year.
finid··on US dismantles forensic science commission
Yes, they did, except this is not a winner takes all thing. We're still living in the same country.
finid··on US dismantles forensic science commission
“The availability of prompt and accurate forensic science analysis to our law enforcement officers and prosecutors is critical to integrity in law enforcement, reducing violent crime, and increasing public safety,” Sessions said in the statement. “We applaud the professionalism of the National Commission on Forensic Science and look forward to building on the contributions it has made in this crucial field.”

"applaud and destroy."

finid··on US dismantles forensic science commission
The commission will be replaced with an internal forensics expert(s), so out goes independent scientific oversight of an arm of the govt. that touts so much science.
finid··on Minecraft Set to Launch Its Own Currency
Here's a trick - just say nyet.

After a few times of that, the kid will come to the conclusion that (s)he won't get it and just forget it. It's the same way you train your body in response to certain desires.

finid··on When People Ate People, a Strange Disease Emerged
For the past months I've been seriously considering starting a theme restaurant that served wild meats - deer, hogs, gators, large constrictors, etc. That idea just went out the window.
finid··on What is this colored fiber in my chicken?
I don't think you want to do that with bones from factory-raised chickens.
finid··on What is this colored fiber in my chicken?
What if you kill the dog for the meat and not just for the heck of it?
finid··on What is this colored fiber in my chicken?
...because it does not have bones or cartilage.

So eat the meat and throw away the bones or cartilage. Then go grab the calcium caps afterwards.

finid··on What is this colored fiber in my chicken?
It's the effect of decades of advertisement. We've been duped into thinking that white meat is normal and good, when white meat in chicken breast shows a sedentary existence. Truly free range chickens do not have breast meat as white as those from factory farms.

It's the same way we've been duped into believing that we need to eat that bowl of cereal in the morning.

finid··on Shenzhen is a hothouse of innovation
I agree that China will eventually become a democratic country, but that will even make it stronger, not weaker. China is just getting started, so they're far from collapsing.
