finexplained··on I made $50K in three days with NFTs
This. Currently NFTs are a tool for monetizing social capital.
finexplained··on Nearly half of American workers don’t earn enough to afford a one-bedroom (cont)
Inflation isn't directly (that is one-to-one) tied to the amount of money printed. That's a simplistic view of a complicated phenomena. What matters is demand aggregated among many individuals. You can print any sum of money and if the person you give it to decides not to spend it, it doesn't affect demand and thus doesn't cause inflation. Meanwhile you can stop printing money, and if demand increases inflation can still occur.

> Anyone who didn't get a 20% raise this year lost money

Inflation numbers that just came out measure year-over-year inflation at 5.4%. And last July we had artificially depressed demand during the pandemic.

finexplained··on Princeton admits record-low 3.98% of applicants
It blows my mind that a record-low acceptance rate is held up as an achievement, and not a structural failure. Why is the metric not "we are able to educate X% of students who meet this well-defined bar"? There are some departments in institutions (think CS) who, in the face of exploding enrollments, have made every effort to scale their courses to accommodate as many students who are capable as possible. And they do that with substantially fewer resources than many of these Ivies. Why, as a society, do we tolerate universities selling "exclusivity" instead of education?
finexplained··on Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress
My apologies, it wasn't my intent to imply that myth. I actually completely agree with your position on short selling. At the time of writing it just seemed a bit weird to me, and possibly an incorrect alignment of interests, for a US politician to take a short position in SPY...
finexplained··on Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress
I'm obviously for electing honest people.

It's probably (I don't work at the SEC) true that it's still difficult to catch all perpetrators. The SEC has limited resources and they probably have a way of prioritizing cases that they think have sufficient evidence. No system is perfect, but from my perspective the SEC is a respected organization whose authority is treated seriously. I have frequently been told that I will face serious jail time if I engage in insider trading and am later caught.

finexplained··on Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress
In the financial industry we have restrictions not only on our own trading accounts, but on any account that we might have reasonable influence over. In my particular case, this means both my brokerage accounts and any of those belonging to a spouse. This is a requirement by our compliance departments to follow SEC regulations regarding insider trading. I don't see why similar rules would not be applied in this setting.
finexplained··on Unusual Stock Trading by Whales in US Congress
I agree, it's a start. But importantly it (attempts to) align their interests with the broader US economy. Also it still allows them to invest for their personal futures, which I believe is a right.

Members of congress should only be allowed to invest in SPY/VOO, VTI, and a few other broad ETFs, long only, no options.

finexplained··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
I have actually spent considerable amounts of time reading math related wikipedia articles in graduate school, though those tend to be well written and researched. More often you find ways that things could be explained more clearly.

No, the thought wouldn't even occur to me. I'd just recognize the mistake and move on to what I was doing at the time.

finexplained··on An interview with the man who keeps uploading my feet to WikiFeet
> there are people who don’t experience “this thing is good, i wish to contribute” or “this has brought me joy, i wish to give something back”

I have literally never experienced this feeling. I've thought about why I haven't a lot, and for me I think it's because I have no inherent sense of "community".

finexplained··on Academic “ghost-writing”: the cheating scandal no one will discuss (2020)
The scale matters when classes are graded on a curve. If a few students cheat the score distribution doesn't change too much, if a significant fraction of students cheat it really hurts those who don't.
finexplained··on Metakovan, the mystery Beeple art buyer, and his NFT/DeFi scheme
Except that in this case the bits are literally identical.
