fileeditview··on Germany eyes 10% digital tax on global tech groups
Schröder is long gone and especially the current SPD seems a good distance from Schröder's politics.
fileeditview··on Germany eyes 10% digital tax on global tech groups
I'd say the coalition is just "center" with the CDU being center-right and the SPD being center-left that seems like a good conclusion..

How did the SPD move to the right? By forming a coalition with the CDU? That claim sounds very dubious to me..

fileeditview··on Rhombus Language
I think that's the intention of a panic.. however there is still recover if you need to "catch" it.
fileeditview··on Did UCLA Just Cure Baldness?
Just keep doing it as a statement brother!

No need to instantly start growing hairs again just because it is possible ;)

fileeditview··on Jürgen Schmidhuber – Can All-Purpose Robots Fuel a Comeback?
Hmm.. I was referring to rich Germans not to innovative Germans. That aside the Schwarz Group is building their own Cloud business.. and they were one of the very few large companies that dared to NOT use SAP but build their own stuff. Not sure this counts as innovation but it's worth mentioning.

edit: I just re-read the GP comment and I get it now.. it was only doubting that there are people who recently accumulated riches.. then of course Schwarz would be a bad example :)

Or Dieter Schwarz, founder of Lidl

> I wonder if there is some major propaganda push on HN to discourage actual software engineers from ever running their servers. Judging from the comments in this and similar posts, sounds like it is common belief that it's super expensive and a full time job to run bare metal services. AWS and GCP free credits have created a generation of developers that think running a webserver, a webapp and a database is rocket science, and when stuff breaks the whole company might go bankrupt because no one could ever save a corrupted database.

Related to this observation you really should watch DHHs keynote talk at Rails World 2024 from about minute 20 to 30: https://youtu.be/-cEn_83zRFw?t=1296

He addresses exactly this phenomenon.

EDIT: changed URL to include timestamp to the start of the relevant content.

fileeditview··on Ask HN: Is there any place on the internet capable of freedom of speech?
The problem is that what is legal should not be decided by social media platforms or their users but by the law & the courts. But most often this is not the case.. maybe the OP is addressing this issue.
fileeditview··on Peloton to charge $95 activation fee for used bikes
Yea.. this kind of behavior seems everywhere. I once saw someone take the elevator to the gym and then he used a stair climber machine..

Just a week ago during camping vacation I saw someone use a Quad to fetch baguettes in the morning (<1km). Then these people go jog later.

It's all just some big WTF to me sometimes..

fileeditview··on Every company should be owned by its employees
I think that's a bad argument. Founding your own cooperative makes you kind of an entrepreneur but joining one doesn't. Most workers are joiners not creators in terms of companies. And I bet more than a few of them would gladly become a partial owner of the company they are working for.

But there are so few cooperatives that the chance of you joining one is very slim anyways.

fileeditview··on Ask HN: Those who run mainly Linux and game on Windows, what's your setup like?
I have a dual boot system but actually have not booted Windows in maybe half a year. Basically all games work via Steam these days.. some even native, most via Proton. I have it on my TODO list to finally delete the whole windows partition. Even my taxes I can now do on Linux(browser).
fileeditview··on I Hope Rust Does Not Oxidize Everything
That depends a lot on the domain of the code.. just saying they are massive problems is plain wrong. There is a huge percentage of applications that need not care about GC at all.
fileeditview··on Spot the Drowning Child (2015)
It is a figure of speech and surely was not disrespectful to blind people.
fileeditview··on Dark mode is not as good for your eyes as you believe
Am I the only one that uses light mode at day and dark mode at night? I see this topic light vs dark so often and wonder why nobody mentions that approach..

I have a shortcut in my vim which just toggles my light/dark themes and I use it regularly.

fileeditview··on Why Vivaldi won't follow the current AI trend?
One solution to this problem is to just consume less articles. Just only pick what seems really interesting to you.

Will you miss some cool stuff? Yes

Will you still encounter time wasters? Yes

We are consuming too much and not doing enough productively ourselves.

fileeditview··on Aeon: OpenSUSE for Lazy Developers
I mean the song is funny but it's hilarious that they still mispronounce it.. he constantly sings susAH instead of susEH .. how it should be pronounced, at least if you pronounce it as a German word.
fileeditview··on Ask HN: What are some iconic comments on HN?
haha! the replies are hilarious.. also considering their usernames. good laugh.. thanks!
fileeditview··on Serious Sam handled massive amounts of enemies on 56k modem connections
This is THE one thing I remember from playing Half-life :)
fileeditview··on US has the highest rate of maternal deaths among rich nations. Norway has zero
The idea that a drug is the answer to an overly obese population seems absolutely bonkers to me.
fileeditview··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
This sentiment was was represented in probably any generation ever.. fact is we don't have any clue what will be in 50 years.. be it a positive or negative development.
fileeditview··on The oceans have broken temperature records every day over the past year
That's an interesting theory. Do you have some reference for this claim?

If you look at this: https://www.statista.com/statistics/270499/co2-emissions-in-.... you see the emissions by country e.g.

Don't get me wrong.. I don't think anybody needs a Yacht or private jet.. however I think the emissions come primarily from industry.

fileeditview··on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)
I absolutely agree with you. There are many take home tasks that are way overblown and expect too much. But I am convinced that you can scope it for say 1-2 hours and I think that's a reasonable time investment for an application.

And yes the interviewer has to review that stuff and ask good questions but nobody said this was easy. But for me it showed better outcomes than the usual live leet code interviews.. (I did them too).

fileeditview··on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)
I've talked with applicants about their private projects. It gave me great insights. Also take home tasks with a discussion afterwards are a good thing and can be an alternative if candidates don't have private projects to talk about.
fileeditview··on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)
Only in other countries than the US there are also these interviews and you make far from 400k :)
fileeditview··on Descent 3 Source Code
I often think about what you could learn from trying to run games back in the old days. It was a huge motivation to fix some problem to get a game running. Optimizing the memory in ms-dos because the game needed more etc. Most often getting a game was a journey on its own.

Today kids just have 1 gazillion games on their phone. There is no more connection to the system beneath. No work or effort needed. Just download and play the next best thing.

I think this generation is missing out.

fileeditview··on Neorg – organize your life in Neovim
Same for me. I just use vimwiki with markdown as doc format. Works great for me. If you have simple needs I can recommend
fileeditview··on Is the Job Market Dying?
And then the company just lays off Bob and Jane and thousands of others. Now Jane is angry because she committed a lot of her personal time for the company but was laid off anyways..

Don't be Jane.

fileeditview··on Insult Passphrase Generator
You can even mutter them while entering the password and nobody will suspect that it's an actual passphrase.. just the typical nerd talking to her/his computer.
fileeditview··on Germany: Working from home is here to stay, says study
Even currently managers are doing exactly this. E.g. SAP is in the process of bringing employees back to office for at least 3 days a week. Reasons given were nonsensical. And probably it will just work out as they want because not enough people vote with their feet.
fileeditview··on Abuse and Estrangement by Adult Children: A Sad Secret
So true. Parents and children can be narcissists. However if I read from parents that they have done "nothing wrong" it is a red flag immediately. I have two young kids. Being a good parent is hard.

We all make mistakes all the time and the important part is to make good for them and not reject all responsibility for problems that have emerged.

If your child rejects you, maybe you should not go and demand proof of your wrongdoing. Sometimes even you must acknowledge failure if you are convinced otherwise because you are the parent and have to be an example.
