fijiaarone··on John Carmack on shorter work weeks (2016)
John Carmack probably hasn’t worked a full day in this century.

In the 1990s he was one of the most productive people doing what he loved best. And luckily, after only a few years, never had to have a “job”.

For everyone else, there are marginal returns and higher productivity for shorter working hours — even the burger flipper is more productive in a 4 hour shift than an 8 hour shift.

fijiaarone··on The AI Hype Wall of Shame
I spent more time trying to make hallucinated code from ChatGPT work only to learn that what is claims is completely wrong than it would take to read the actual (out of date, incomplete) documentation and experiment for myself.

Trade isn’t the problem. War is.
fijiaarone··on Brazil develops tropical wheat and predicts self-sufficiency in 5 years
Indigenous communities would rather grow wheat and raise cattle and sell timber than pose in grass skirts and lip rings for exploitive camera crews.
fijiaarone··on Plane: Open-Source Alternative to Jira
You’ll have hook it up to the network at some point. And then you’ll want to add IO.

If page render takes 100ms you’d better have some pretty complex animations. Data and bandwidth should be at least 80% of your web app speed, and you should work on optimizing the other 15% that is server side CPU bound.

fijiaarone··on Plane: Open-Source Alternative to Jira
Im glad there is finally an open source app with a UI that has more white space than content.
fijiaarone··on Plane: Open-Source Alternative to Jira
Code is not a source of truth, it is an attempt at partial realization of an incomplete understanding of a bunch of contradictory assumptions about what’s true at a particular point in time.

Bad management demands bad tools.

The first amendment must be a lot longer than I thought.
fijiaarone··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
Why is denying or promoting something considered hate? Where is the list of things we are allowed to deny or approve of?
fijiaarone··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
Case law doesn’t exist in the United States of America. You might be thinking about medieval England, or ancient Persia, where a king or judge’s word becomes law. In the USA, people are judged individually and are equal before the law. One exception, that is traditional, but not enumerated in law, is that the Supreme Court can strike down a law that it deems unconstitutional, but may not amend or make new laws itself. Lower courts havee Ed no such power.
fijiaarone··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
It’s voluntary. The only way they can shut you up if you don’t agree to is to kill you.
fijiaarone··on PyPI Was Subpoenaed
It’s ok, this government is perfect.
fijiaarone··on Helping a kid who made a math mistake
Yes, it’s very disheartening to see math teachers not understand how to check your work.

There are algorithms (and heuristics) that have been known for centuries to verify (or estimate) check most results from arithmetic to calculus.

It’s as if programmers were not taught how to do logging or assertions.

In math there are two types of errors, not understanding the problem and mistakes. Redoing the work won’t help at all for misunderstanding or lack of understanding and has only a marginal chance of catching the mistake.

fijiaarone··on Internet disrupted in Pakistan amid arrest of former PM Imran Khan
That’s why we (the US) are shutting down internet access in Pakistan.
fijiaarone··on Internet disrupted in Pakistan amid arrest of former PM Imran Khan
This is not an Internet disruption, this is a coordinated shutdown by US social media networks to suppress protests against the illegal arrest of Pakistan’s president by a paramilitary organization.
fijiaarone··on Are sockets the wave of the future? (1990)
They would have recommended GRPC over JSON-SOAP-P over web sockets using Lambda functions communicating via Kafka event streams, but HTTP hadn’t been invented yet.
fijiaarone··on Record labels panic as A.I. generated song becomes ‘hit single’
People are becoming more concerned about where their electricity and food and heat and shelter are going to come from. It won’t really be AI that tells you to get into the pod because the AI said it’s the only way to survive.
fijiaarone··on Record labels panic as A.I. generated song becomes ‘hit single’
Lots of people listen to EDM.

Happy Gilmore AI?
fijiaarone··on Record labels panic as A.I. generated song becomes ‘hit single’
Have you heard any hit single in the last 20+ years? AI couldn’t possibly come up with anything worse that every single one of them.
fijiaarone··on An example of LLM prompting for programming
One strange coincidence with the emergence of ChatGPT is that at almost the exact same time, Google became practically unusable as a search engine. Like at least an order of magnitude worse.

People used to use Google the same way they use ChatGPT. They would ask a question in plain English, and get sent back a list of relevant links to blog posts, articles, stack overflow, or whatever that had answers to their questions, including example code.

Sometimes that code or information was outdated or completely wrong and sometimes it was too basic to be useful, or just the code-generated docs.

Google has been getting gradually worse over the years due to spam, algorithm gaming, and ads, but circa late November 2022 it became practically worthless.

fijiaarone··on An example of LLM prompting for programming
And the code that GPT does write, if it is even close to correct, must be code that exists in many places already, and usually (like the case of so much react code) doesn’t need to exist at all.

And yet, despite there being more complex machinery in farming there is also much more untrained labor. People just don’t notice it because the untrained labor (millions of people) that plant and harvest are an underclass that does not speak their language or associate with them.
