fijiaarone··on Linux CoC Announces Decision Wrt Kent Overstreet (Bcachefs)
`I want superiority de-coupled from technical expertise`

So you want to take the power to produce taken away from the producers and coalesce it into the hands of those who do not produce for the sole purpose of controlling those who do produce.

You're literally a walking Orwell quote.

fijiaarone··on OK, I can partly explain the LLM chess weirdness now
Being as good as a professor at confidently hallucinating nonsense when you don't know the answer is a very high level skill.
fijiaarone··on OK, I can partly explain the LLM chess weirdness now
Actually, LLMs do call scripts that correct bad math, and have gotten progressively better because of it. It's another special case example.
fijiaarone··on OK, I can partly explain the LLM chess weirdness now
It's very clear that GPT-3.5-turbo-whatever is cheating and that LLMs cannot, in fact play chess. It was trained in sequences of chess moves and has explicit coding to recognize chess moves and respond accordingly. If you only define "cheating" as calling a chess engine like stockfish, then your definition of cheating is too narrow.

It's exactly like the strawberry problem. No LLM can count the letters in a word. But when shown that, they explicitly were taught to recognize the prompt and count the letters in the word. They didn't create a letter counting algorithm, but they did build a table of words and letter counts. And every "new" LLM explicitly looks for a phrase that looks like "how many Rs are in stawberry" and then the LLM looks in the "letters in words" neural network instead of the the "what is the next likely word in this sentence net".

All "new" LLMs (in the next few weeks) will suddenly become decent at chess because they will have weighted preference to look at the "chess moves" neural net instead of the "random numbers and letters sequence" neural net when they detect a sentence that looks like "d4, d5; nd3, ?" etc.

fijiaarone··on I tried every top email marketing tool
$100/month for less than most mail providers offer free, and $1000/month for standard features is only for startups trying to burn money before they get off the runway.
fijiaarone··on I tried every top email marketing tool
I haven't figured out email marketing yet for my startup, but I'll give Kiela a try. Love open source, and would rather pay for emails then contacts. And mailchimp sucks.
fijiaarone··on AMD outsells Intel in the datacenter space
In 1996 we set up a rack (department store surplus) of Cyrix 586 (running on 486 socket C motherboards) running at 75mhz with 16mb of RAM and could serve 100 concurrent users with CGI scripts and image maps doing web serving and VOIP with over 1 million requests a month on a single T1 line.

Good luck doing that on a load balanced rack of 96 core AMD servers today.

fijiaarone··on Failure analysis of the Arecibo 305 meter telescope collapse
Finally a cogent post. Kids these days.
fijiaarone··on A Week of Failing to Pay with Bitcoin in El Salvador
I believe everything the media tells me.

So I'm going to dismiss this "anecdote" because the plural of reality is not data.

fijiaarone··on Using LLMs to enhance our testing practices
Sometimes you actually have to think, or hire someone who can. Go join the comments section on the Goodharts Law post to go on about measuring magical metrics.
fijiaarone··on A modest critique of Htmx
you can always just do:

    <script src="react.js">
    <script src="react-dom.js">
    <script>
    const recognition = undefined
    var foo = document.querySelector("#foo")
    let bar = ReactDOM.createRoot(foo)
    foo.innerHTML = bar.render("<b>eyond<a>ll{recognition}");
    </script>

As soon as Svelte 5 stabilizes you can start porting libraries to work with it. In the meantime, you can play with the tutorial in a textarea in a browser and feel as productive as you want.
fijiaarone··on A modest critique of Htmx
React alone is just a bad template library.
fijiaarone··on A modest critique of Htmx
Nobody claimed browsers were changing drastically, they're talking about front end frameworks.

There are a lot of green screen terminal apps that still work today, and haven't been touched in more than 5 years. As long as you leave the same code on the same machine once it's working, and keep the moths off the vacuum tubes and the power flow steady, there shouldn't be a problem.

But try to change that CP/M parts terminal so it can interface with your new EPR and see how well it "just works".

fijiaarone··on A modest critique of Htmx
I think the argument of HTMX is that if you have a simple UI, there is a simpler way of doing things.

The corollary argument is -- Why don't you have a simple UI?

fijiaarone··on Reflections on Palantir
If you want to pick winners, look for companies that hire connected companies.

In hindsight, the fact that Palatir went to Airbus meant that the fix was in and it was already decided that Boeing was going down. Or for the less cynical, it was Palantir's magic that made Airbus successful and if Boeing were competent they would have hired Palantir.

fijiaarone··on Reflections on Palantir
Common sense gets in the way of gamblers instinct.
fijiaarone··on Reflections on Palantir
Visualization is a fancy package. Nobody looks at visualizations, but that's what makes people buy.
fijiaarone··on Reflections on Palantir
Now that the surveillance state has won, people want to be on the winning side.
fijiaarone··on AI PCs Aren't Good at AI: The CPU Beats the NPU
Yeah, I know what you mean. I hate lugging around a big CPU core.
fijiaarone··on WordPress Accessibility Team Meetings Suspended
Automattic is hurting financial. That is why they asked employees to take severance and why they are lashing out at their competition.
fijiaarone··on CRLF is obsolete and should be abolished
There is no reason those ascii characters need to stay unprintable. You could use other characters like an interpunct, silcrow, or down carat.
fijiaarone··on CRLF is obsolete and should be abolished
On manual typewriters there is a lever that turns the roller to accomplish a line feed (or two if set for double space.) This lever is usually located on the left side of the carriage to make it convenient to push it back to the right side in the same motion.
fijiaarone··on CRLF is obsolete and should be abolished
Line feed is exactly what you do when you are editing text. But nobody uses it.

CR + LF was meant as an instruction for teletype printers, so it is outdated, and looks like he withdrew the proposal (which couldn’t have ever been serious) after some feedback.

Fossil SCM, btw, was written by the creator of SQLite, so his opinion shouldn’t be discounted as some random nobody.

fijiaarone··on Don't squander public trust on bullshit
Willing to bet this wasn’t a shooting as claimed, but a personal squabble. He probably got pulled over by the police, talked back, and then drove away, bumping the officer with his side mirror. Officer got mad because he didn’t get the last word, and sent out the alert.
fijiaarone··on Insider trader had all the answers
Strong scent of bovine effluence.

In order to reset their email password he would’ve needed access to their email.

fijiaarone··on Bureaucrat Mode
If you are a big successful entrenched organization, change to the status quo is the last thing you want.

Because the status quo is that you’re a big successful entrenched organization.

fijiaarone··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
There appears to be a bug on the Column.com contact form after signing up. Number of employees is pre-populated with a range (e.g. 2-5) based on initial question, but trying to submit the contact form gives a NaN error with "Please match the requested format" but is not editable.

So I can't contact you to create an real account.

fijiaarone··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2024)
Column sounds cool.

Do you have a public dev environment where people can test it out and work on building apps on top of it?

I’d love to experiment with using column to replace my banking and payments for my consulting business.
