figmert··on Show HN: I built a web app to open source travel itineraries
Albeit slow, it's an amazing app. Even solo trips are really good to plan on this. I wish there was a self hosted version of it.
figmert··on Redis adopts dual source-available licensing
I don't know which part of your comment you're saying sarcastically, but I presume you're referencing the fact that Redis uses up a lot of memory.

This is because Redis is a caching database, and pulls the data into memory for it to be faster. This is by design.

figmert··on Study: 61 UK firms tried a 4-day workweek and after a year, they still love it
The point of a 4-day work week isn't to cram the 5th day into 4 days, it's completely removing the 5th day, thus working 8 hours every day for 4 days, as opposed to 10 hours for 5 days.
figmert··on JavaScript Bloat in 2024
> It’s like we suddenly and collectively became afraid of the page reload on websites

I used to work at a place where page reloads was constantly an issue brought up as a negative. They couldn't be bothered to fix the slow page loads and instead avoided page changes.

I argued several times that we should improve performance instead of caring about page reloads, but never got through to anyone (in fairness, it was probably mostly cos of a senior dev there).

At some point a new feature was being developed, and instead of just adding it to our existing product, it was decided to use an iframe with the new feature as a separate product embedded.

figmert··on Julian Assange's moment of truth has arrived – and the stakes are high
> If we allow this to happen, where do we go from here?

But we've already allowed it to happen. He's been in jail for years now. For something he may or may not have done. He's on the verge of being deported to the US, where he will most likely be imprisoned for journalism. Something he shouldn't have had to think about. If we wouldn't have allowed this to happen in the first place, he could have stand trial for the other things he's been accused of.

So it's already happened. It's why Snowden is in Russia, instead of living his life in the US.

figmert··on Show HN: Aldi Price Map
Some years ago, the UK had a great website comparing online prices between supermarkets called MySupermarket[0]. They went closed down, but it genuinely saved me lots of money. IIRC, it even compared the prices with delivery fees.

I was sad they closed down, but a few companies have popped up since, but I've not been able to try them to see if they come close to how good it was. Heck, at the time I thought about creating an alternative, but wasn't sure where to start, so didn't end up trying.

Anyway, point is, we need more of this sort of comparison sites for things to keep things competitively priced, and to ensure people don't pay more for the same things.

figmert··on OutRun – Open-source, privacy oriented, outdoor fitness tracker
Not open source but Sleep as Android is a great app that integrates with many different devices to track your sleep. They also have their own devices that can help improve tracking.
figmert··on Faster shell startup with shell switching
Unfortunately, running exit is not a great strategy for running benchmarks. As an example, for zsh specifically, plugin managers are optimized for fast exit.

romkatv did a great write-up and benchmark within the context of zsh[0]. It's a great read.

figmert··on YouTube's AdBlock performance issues are caused by Adblock/AdBlock Plus
YouTube certainly might be doing things on purpose, but this specific issue is not, as identified by Gorhill, the creator of uBlock Origin, and a big name in the ad blocking community.
figmert··on YouTube is loading slower for users with ad blockers yet again
Raymond Hill (gorhill), the creator of uBlock Origin, has done some investigation and has found that this only affects AdBlock and AdBlock Plus[0]. Both of which are owned by the same people, and share the same ad blocking engine.

uBlock Origin is not affected.

I posted this on HN earlier today[1], but it unfortunately gained no traction. I guess outrage spreads easier. Gorhill explicitly points out some websites that spread the outrage, but not the real diagnosed issue.

figmert··on Exploring Podman: A More Secure Docker Alternative
A bunch of stuff being enabling a single systemd service, and pointing the DOCKER_HOST env to said service.
figmert··on OpenWrt One/AP-24.XY: new open source router board by OpenWrt and Banana Pi
Does anyone know a good late/5g dongle that works with OpenWRT?
figmert··on Show HN: Quickwit – OSS Alternative to Elasticsearch, Splunk, Datadog
Looking at the docker compose, this seems like a very complicated tool to run.

You'd need Kafka, zookeeper, and Jaeger. All would need to be HA. Then also this service. Not mentioning postgres because in theory you can use aurora or the like.

How quick have your current customers been able to get up and running so far? And how much maintainence have they needed?

figmert··on Stream to Chromecast with resolved, vlc and bash
Problem is that this needs clients to catch on. The likes of Netflix and YouTube need to add support. But I highly doubt YouTube will care.

Regardless, I'm glad this exists. Hopefully in the future it becomes more prevalent.

figmert··on Bazzite – a SteamOS-like OCI image for desktop, living room, and handheld PCs
Any one know if there is a reason not to install this on my SD? The Waydroid installation is very interesting. How well does it work? Would you consider this a bit bloated?
figmert··on Travel routers improve your life [video]
I bought one of these little things, mostly to be able to get an LTE connection when I'm traveling, and the rest of the features were a great value add.

It's been very helpful so far for the WiFi repeating and being able to override the DNS across the board, however, I've struggled to find a decent LTE stick for it. I bought a Huawei E3372-325 LTE stick, but unfortunately it doesn't work properly. Having searched for the issue, I'm not fully understanding what needs to be done.

I'd love some suggestion for a decent stick that works with OpenWRT. I've struggled to find a good resource for this where I can narrow down products that would work with it, and suit my needs.

figmert··on UK announces commercial operations of longest land/subsea interconnector
Will this finally decrease some of these bills? Or will this just mean even more record profit for the energy companies?
figmert··on DeskHop – Fast Desktop Switching
Prior to Synergy going to closed source, it was forked into Barrier[0], which then was forked into input-leap[1]. Both open source.

figmert··on Philips recalls 340 MRI machines because they may explode in an emergency
Great point, and it makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.
figmert··on Philips recalls 340 MRI machines because they may explode in an emergency
~~I don't know why this is relevant, and quite frankly I find comment odd. Just because y is safer than z, does not mean we should ignore reasons why z isn't safe.~~

See OP's response for why this is crossed out (assuming HN supports it).

figmert··on Mozilla expands extension support for Firefox for Android
Not everything is a conspiracy
figmert··on Mozilla expands extension support for Firefox for Android
Considering uBlock Origin was the first extension to work (and, from what I understand, they worked extra hard to ensure it works), I doubt that's the reason.
figmert··on Piracy Is Back: Piracy Statistics for 2023
> Internet piracy isn’t ethically justifiable

Is it not? What about when a company like Sony pulls millions of purchased digital content without a refund?

What about when discovery pulls a whole lot of content so they can write it off?

What about when companies push for digital only releases without a way to physically own the content?

No, piracy isn't just ethical, it is the only way one can ensure they actually own what they buy.

figmert··on Report: YouTube adding user-traceable ID tag to links shared off-platform
Pretty sure it's way older than that. My YouTube ReVanced version is installed early March and it has this behaviour. I'm quite sure I've seen it also last year too.
figmert··on Roundcube open-source webmail software merges with Nextcloud
> ~~If you're hosting it without apache (as in: without htaccess support),~~ make sure the logs directory and files aren't exposed publicly.

Never expose any logs to strangers for anything anywhere

figmert··on Amazon Aurora Limitless Database
Literally just today I was looking into a new project that requires postgres, and read on the aurora doc that this exists. Didn't look further into it considering the project is new and no migration is involved, but if you need this, worth searching.
figmert··on Amazon EC2 Enhances Defense in Depth with Default IMDSv2
What kind of multi-tenancy are you trying to solve that Kubernetes namespaces cannot?
figmert··on test, [, and [[ (2020)
This is different. Alpine uses busybox, where everything is implemented in the busybox binary, thus everything is symlinked to it.

In other distributions, test is a separate binary, and [ is a link.

figmert··on Bypass Paywalls Clean combines all soft paywall hacks into one neat package
Besides what the others said, the new clean one supports a whole host of additional websites, is updated more regularly, and generally works better. I think my biggest issue with the clean one is that it's not on any of the add-on/extension stores, and it's unclear why it was removed from the add-on/extension store.
