figmert··on Node 20 will be deprecated on GitHub Actions runners
Just be careful with Make's exit codes. Just gobbles them up and exits 2 with no way of disabling it from what I could gather.

Instead use mise tasks.

figmert··on Linux phones are more important now than ever
You're tech savvy enough, you're not the target for such a feature. The target is the grandmas and grandpas, and other people who have no idea about such things.
figmert··on Do I Need Kubernetes?
You don't need kubernetes in the same way you don't need a fast internet service. Sure you can work with dial up, but working with 1gbps internet line is just so much more convenient
figmert··on I ditched Docker for Podman
For #2, it will also use docker compose v2 if available. Docker compose v2 is still a standalone binary even in the case of installing Docker (it's a plugin). As long as you download the v2 binary, put it in the correct location, the podman compose subcommand will invoke it.
figmert··on I ditched Docker for Podman
Podman Desktop also exists.
figmert··on I ditched Docker for Podman
Docker compose works fine with podman via its socket.
figmert··on Go is still not good
Has Go become the new PHP? Every now and then I see an article complaining about Go's shortcomings.
figmert··on Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit
The problem is podman in the apt repos are very old. Last time I checked, Podman was on v5, where debian was on v2 something.
figmert··on Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit
If you use qemu, you don't need a complicated multi-node build system. Obviously performance becomes a factor then.
figmert··on Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit
Podman has this built-in, and there is an optional UI called Podman Desktop.
figmert··on Using Podman, Compose and BuildKit
It certainly does!

For what it's worth, podman has also a thin wrapper around docker compose (podman compose) which can also automatically select `podman-compose`.

Note:

- `podman-compose` is an early attempt at remaking `docker-compose` but for Podman.

- Later Podman wrote a Docker compatible socket instead, which can work with most docker clis that accept a `DOCKER_HOST` argument, including `docker` and `docker-compose` (both v1 and v2)

- `podman compose` is a thin wrapper that automatically selects `docker-compose` or `podman-compose` depending on which is installed.

figmert··on Sign in with Google in Chrome
To be clear, I do use Firefox and haven't even installed Chrome/Chromium for a long time. But given that Mozilla is inching closer and closer towards ad agency, it's only a matter of time that Firefox will open up the same issues that Chrome has.

The argument of Firefox vs Chrome is not siloed and inherently includes the argument of what their respective developers do and don't do. If we didn't need to include them in the face of such an argument, there would be little reason to switch away Chrome.

figmert··on Sign in with Google in Chrome
> they actually do not or cannot present any tangible argument against Firefox. They just shit talk about Firefox, and hand-wave their criticism with inane comments like "they lost the boat".

Have you seen that Mozilla has basically become an ad agency?

figmert··on The UK’s new age-gating rules are easy to bypass
If you think VPN is going to stop kids from accessing porn, I have a bridge to sell you.
figmert··on Google is tracking you (even when using DuckDuckGo)
It's simple fear mongering and aimed at the wrong audience. Companies want people tracked to improve their ads and have a higher reach. The people who are being tracked can't exactly do much about what tracking system a website uses.
figmert··on Google's widespread tracking across the web
VPN providers can't meaningfully block trackers. If they say they do, they have to be intercepting SSL which requires extra work (must install their generated CA on all clients) and you are literally handing over all data to the VPN provider, more so than without of course, as they'd be able to decrypt HTTPS payloads.
figmert··on Show HN: A Language Server Implementation for SystemD Unit Files
Would be good to add support for custom units based on generates (e.g. Podman[0]).

figmert··on Couchers is officially out of beta
I think the difference between Airbnbs and couchsurfers is huge. Couch surfing is a voluntary yet free service provided by someone out of the goodwill of their heart. Airbnb is provided for profit. Leaving such reviews is fine for an Airbnb (assuming it's deserved ofc), but certainly not okay for couch surfing.

It does depend what they've reviewed though. Is the person hosting living in a in a gross apartment vs the towel designs are not nice.

figmert··on Tools I love: mise(-en-place)
On top of that, it also enabled environment management (replacing direnv). Env vars can also be retrieved from secret stores.

It can also manage tools from various backends, e.g. go, aqua, cargo, npm, ubi and others

figmert··on Show HN: Tool to Automatically Create Organized Commits for PRs
Surely this would be the job of a prepare-commit-msg/commit-msg hook?
figmert··on Iran asks its people to delete WhatsApp from their devices
Well the nearly $900 billion dollars budget the US military has, has to be spent somehow.
figmert··on Show HN: Container-compose – A Docker-compose like tool for Apple containers
It took Podman a good 2 or so years to develop a good docker compatible http api. I presume that's why. There's no point in coming out with all of the features when they can release with some support, and add on top of it.
figmert··on Show HN: Ikuyo a Travel Planning Web Application
This is amazing. I've used wanderlog extensively, but while its feature set is great, it can be a nightmare to work due to how slow it can be sometimes.

I've just registered to test it out a little bit. I tried to replicate my upcoming trip that I have set up in Wanderlog, and have the following feedback:

- Overall, amazing! Snappy. Real easy to follow.

- I love the simplicity.

- I like that this is essentially excel (kind of), but with travel specific additions.

Now for the potential improvements:

- I can't add someone else as an editor, it seems. Clicking add just logs a "TripForm" with the form object. I don't see any network requests either.

- Expenses don't allow me to select how to split it (maybe this is an issue because there's no-one else part of the trip?)

- Timetable contrast needs a bit of work. Maybe needs some padding/margins or something.

- MapTiler doesn't seem to have a good enough database. I struggled to add 152 Morrison Road

- Activities can't span multiple days (I tried adding a train ride than arrived 45 mins past midnight)

- Adding/editing activities while on the timetable page, does not update them until I refresh (or navigate away)

Outside of all that, how are you planning to monetise this? The code is released under MIT, which doesn't stop anyone from adding some subscription plan, hosting it, and advertising it. May I suggest something like AGPL?

figmert··on Void: Open-source Cursor alternative
Side note: is there an AI app that sets up a full initial SaaS app based on prompts? I'm struggling to get something like Cursor to behave correctly.
figmert··on Replacing Kubernetes with systemd (2024)
> What I really wish for is a lightweight alternative offering a Kubernetes-compatible API that runs well on inexpensive VPS instances. The gap between enterprise-grade container orchestration and affordable hobby hosting remains frustratingly wide.

Depending on how much of the Kube API you need, Podman is that. It can generate containers and pods from Kubernetes manifests [0]. Kind of works like docker compose but with Kubernetes manifests.

This even works with systemd units, similar to how it's outlined in the article.

Podman also supports most (all?) of the Docker api, thus docker compose, works, but also, you can connect to remote sockets through ssh etc to do things.

figmert··on Live Map of the London Underground
This is very cool, but it is so sad to look at. South of the river has barely any connections far as the underground is concerned. The trains aren't much better.
figmert··on Dockerfmt: A Dockerfile Formatter
To be clear, the difference is something along this line:

$ bash -ec 'echo hello && ls -la /tmp/ | grep systemd && false && echo testing'
    hello
    drwx------. 3 root root 60 Mar 29 18:33 systemd-private-bluetooth.service-yuSMVM
    drwx------. 3 root root 60 Mar 29 18:33 systemd-private-upower.service-YhHHP2
versus

$ bash -euxc 'echo hello; ls -la /tmp/ | grep systemd; false; echo testing'
    + echo hello
    hello
    + ls -la /tmp/
    + grep systemd
    drwx------. 3 root root 60 Mar 29 18:33 systemd-private-bluetooth.service-yuSMVM
    drwx------. 3 root root 60 Mar 29 18:33 systemd-private-upower.service-YhHHP2
    + false
Docker also supports the `SHELL` syntax now, which is even better, because you can set it once at the top of the Dockerfile without having to do the whole `set -eux` on every line.
figmert··on Dockerfmt: A Dockerfile Formatter
I'm firmly in that camp but I also always add `set -eux`, which makes it so much better at debugging as that gives you individual commands it runs before the output of them.
figmert··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions
Highly recommend nektos/act, and if it's something complex enough, you can Ssh into the server to investigate. There are many action that facilitate this.
figmert··on The DOJ still wants Google to sell off Chrome
It's not really required. Android comes with a separate webview (that cannot be overridden). Sure it's based on Chromium but that means there should zero reliance on Chrome the product, and those known working login portals can continue working without Chrome.

It's well known that Google requires manufacturers to install their apps and requires it to be uninstallable. This includes Gmail, Google, and others.
