figmert··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
I'm late to the party, but Gitea as has Gitea Actions[0] based on their fork[1] of act[2]. Their claim is that it's mostly compatible with GitHub Actions. I wonder if this can be spun off to have the control plane run separately and integrate into GitHub Action. Or alternatively mirror the repo for Gitea Actions only.

figmert··on No AI* Here – A Response to Mozilla's Next Chapter
You mean you don't summarize those terrible articles you happen to come across and you're a little intrigued, hoping that there's some substance, and then you read, and it just repeats the same thing over and over again with different wording? Anyway, I sometimes still give them the benefit of the doubt, and end up doing a summary. Often they get summarized into 1 or 2 sentences.
figmert··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
I just tried running this on a 30 minute meeting with some 10 people in. It got to the end, then just bailed without transcribing. I also did not get any errors or anything.
figmert··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
By the way, how does this handle conversations between two or more people?
figmert··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025)
It'd be nice to keep the voice recording too, as I noticed at least one thing that it transcribed wrong.

This way one can listen to the recording again, and correct such issues.

figmert··on Some surprising things about DuckDuckGo
Not really. Ddg sells the right to show ads on a search with a given keyword. They don't send your query keywords to an advertiser or whatever.
figmert··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
You are not forced to buy their product, or to buy into their schedule.
figmert··on GitHub Actions has a package manager, and it might be the worst
A lot of the actions people tend to use are just unnecessary. They're simple wrappers around real tools. In those cases, use mise-en-place. It's a single action that installs all relevant tools (and keeps your local dev env in check), and it supports lock files.

How serious is/was this whole $100k for H1-B applications? How has this impacted the hiring process?

Others have already given your answer, but heads up, LE is lowering the certificate lifetime to 45 days[0].

figmert··on Cloud-Init on Raspberry Pi OS
Cloud-init isn't about boot process, it's about initial provisioning of a system.

If you need the host's public keys registered somewhere, you can do that using cloud-init, but there's not built-in mechanism. You'd have to write your own script to do so.

figmert··on India orders smartphone makers to preload state-owned cyber safety app
Meanwhile the US has more than 4 different state owned cyber crime apps named after random things such as Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook, and many more. The kicker is they run all over the world.

Anyway, that doesn't in any way negate that this is shit for the people of India.

figmert··on Installing Java in 2025, and Version Managers
Perhaps. But I wouldn't be so sure. It has functionality to replace the following tools:

- make (via its tasks feature)

- direnv (via its environments features)

- Just about most package managers (via it's dev tools features)

It has backends for just about anything (aqua, cargo, asdf, gem, github, go, etc).

It allows for locking your tooling similar to a package.json lock file.

And the nice thing is that it does it a lot better those tools (I recently found out make gobbles up any error codes and returns 2).

figmert··on Installing Java in 2025, and Version Managers
I'd skip that and use mise. It's an asdf compatible manager and does so much more. It manages scripts (replacing make), environment variables and it's super fast.
figmert··on Nearby peer discovery without GPS using environmental fingerprints
I've noticed many metro systems in cities do somehow receive GPS and cellular networks which I'm always impressed by. London on the other hand, has only recently started receiving signal for cellular networks, and rollout is slow.

GPS does not work at all. I've always thought using the WiFi access points that have been installed on the underground could be a great addition to something like Citymapper to figure out where you are located even when there is no GPS.

figmert··on WBlock: A New Ad-Blocker for Safari
Pihole/adguard are great, and while their function overlaps with uBo, they are still different. You should use both.

UBo (and uBoL) have additional rules that can clean up pages. E.g. removing containers of ads.

It does much more too.

figmert··on Production-Grade Container Deployment with Podman Quadlets – Larvitz Blog
I have never denied helm is a mistake that people refuse to stop using. I quite think of Helm as the same as Ansible. Helm is only nice when you consume packages written by others.
figmert··on Production-Grade Container Deployment with Podman Quadlets – Larvitz Blog
Ansible is a procedural mess. It's like helm had a baby with a very bad procedural language. It works, but it's such a mess to work with. Half of the time it breaks because you haven't thought about some if statement that covers a single node or some bs.

Comparing that to docker swarm and/or k8s manifests (I guess even Helm if you're not the one developing charts), Ansible is a complete mess. You're better off managing things with Puppet or Salt, as that gives you an actual declarative mechanism (i.e. desired state like K8s manifests).

figmert··on Production-Grade Container Deployment with Podman Quadlets – Larvitz Blog
> Ansible

OP asked for something consistent and between K8s and Swarm. Ansible is just a mistake that people refuse to stop using.

figmert··on Unofficial Microsoft Teams client for Linux
Usually in those scenarios you stop and do the research yourself and correct it. You don't keep asking it. Also starting new conversations often help.

Actually could not believe this, so had to look it up. I find this wild.

figmert··on Linux gamers on Steam cross over the 3% mark
DRM can work on Linux, it's just developers choose to not enabled support, and in some cases (Epic Games) actively update games so it won't work with Linux.
figmert··on Keep Android Open
The problem is that a new project and even a fork would need buy in buy companies like Samsung. Otherwise a project LineageOS would be much more popular. This is hard to do without serious money.

figmert··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
Hi I'm Kurdish. I'm 100% aware, heck my mother still cries in front of me remembein some of the horrors she saw. I'm also aware that we, the Kurds, have arguably benefited the most from that war. But that does not negate the fact that the US lied about Saddam having WMDs.
figmert··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
Is the US government is so much more stable than Iran's?

The US has been directly or indirectly involved in all conflict in the middle east in the past few decades, and the instability in the region is due to the US's failed foreign policy.

Maybe the US should stop pretending they know what they're doing. The US can't keep domestic terrorism at bay, why are they trying in a foreign setting?

figmert··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
So they can't build nuclear energy to power their infrastructure?
figmert··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
Ignore the rest of what wrote, and preemptively call facts silly. I'm sure you're more familiar with the matter than IAEA. Heck, even Tulsi Gabbard, the US intelligence director initially said they were not building nuclear weapons, until she changed her tune after Trump probably barked at her.
figmert··on Delete FROM users WHERE location = 'Iran';
Every international body had checked, and confirmed that Iran had no intention of building nuclear weapons. Even to this day. Even after what Israel and US did.

Netanyahu has been saying Iran in minutes away from building nuclear weapons since early 2010s.

Never mind those facts. Let's say they are building weapons. What gives the US the right to build enough nuclear weapons that they could destroy the world multiple times over, but Iran cannot? Why is the US funding terrorist groups, but Iran cannot? Just cos they're the big bad boogeyman? Don't you think it'd be better to normalise relationship with them so that they become friendly? So that even if they are building weapons, they wouldn't use it against us because they're allies?
