figmert··on Tailscale – Information about AI for Candidates [pdf]
I thought this was interesting. Most companies and candidates use AI these days as part of their job search, and during my current job search, so far this is the first time I've come across a comapny having such thing outlined. I think this is great, as it sets expectations, in addition to that, you as a candidate can decide whether you're okay with these expectations.

Well, I stand corrected! Thanks for the link
figmert··on It's time Amazon played by the same rules as everyone else [video]
It's obviously Amazon that requires them to wear the vest. Just because the contractor they work for enforces it doesn't, doesn't mean it's not Amazon requiring it.

I think if one thing Mamdani is great at, it's that he's a great marketer. His brand is just so much better than any candidate I've seen in the US. Heck even in the UK to be honest.
figmert··on Docker Sandboxes – Disposable, isolated sandboxes for AI agents
Once you have a vm, the container provides next to no additional security benefits. It's just unnecessary overhead at that point.

> If the alternatives are clunky linux machines

I can tell this is a bad faith argument considering Linux can practically run on a toaster if you'd like.

And if Apple would allow it, Linux could easily run on Apple hardware, but that's the user hostility Apple gives. The things you've mentioned Apple does, Linux OSes have been doing for way longer.

And yes, Microslop is user hostile. It seems any org with an ounce of necessity for profit eventually turns hostile to user. This includes all FAANG. And yes, though far less hostile (and still not an excuse), even Valve has made some user hostile decisions.

What mask exactly?

Tactile click? Really? Weird hill to die. You're willing to accept inferior hardware, more ewaste, and a tighter grip by Apple for a silly little click?

> Phones don't run on fuel (and you can recharge a phone with any electricity supply)

That analogy would be the charging port. Until the EU forced them to use USB-C, they refused to let you use anything but their proprietary (inferior) connector.

> I’ve never found them user hostile. They just sell appliances that do a thing.

It is very hostile to users and their freedom. They are requiring you to buy things that they approve of. I guarantee you somewhere in their backlog is an item that says "require app store for app installations on macOS". In line with iOS.

You have paid for some hardware, and you can only run their software. They are refusing to give you information on running one of many other operating systems. They are refusing to allow you to buy hardware that runs their operating system[0] (this is in my opinion more okay, unless they are willing to sell the software separately).

They then refuse to give you new versions of the same software that they enforce to run on the hardware you bought. The hardware is probably still in perfect working order, and will still work with an older version of said software, but soon after some zero day is found, and you are stuck with this software that you can either never connect to the internet, or suck it up and accept the risk.

You can recycle it sure, but apple will give you pennies on the dollar (if they give you anything at all) and no one else really wants it because Apple refuses to let them (or you for that matter) fix it if it breaks, give it a new life through Linux (or Windows for that matter). So now you have at best some expensive paperweight, at worst e-waste.

So yes, Apple is user hostile whether it affects you or not. And no, Apple is not the only one.

Apple is like that because people are hellbent on giving Apple money despite them being so user hostile.
figmert··on Show HN: Bor – Open-source policy management for Linux desktops
I would hope that it locks some of these policies. No user should be able to make changes to policies set by the administrator
figmert··on What Even Are Microservices?
It's a result of being human, and the fact that we still haven't figured out how to work together well.

figmert··on What Even Are Microservices?
Yes, and then they start complaining that the shared domain objects are not kept up to date by team $notMine, and so they inevitably go to a shared library where they fall back into the same issues.

They can. You just have to steer them
figmert··on So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe
I used to use infinity for reddit, after the api saga, I was able to patch it with my own api key since personal ones were still free. I lost the key since, and had to re-install Infinity, so when I go to the reddit api page, turns out they don't give you keys any more, and instead you need to sign up to their developer platform, which I requires a lot of hoops to get a key for free, and from what I understand, that's a big if.

Anyway, needless to say I've stopped using it for the past 3 months or so. I still open old.reddit on my computer every now and then, but I use reddit so much less because of this.

figmert··on You only need the frontier model for one single edit
The reason I use plan then implement is because I can adjust the plan, whereas if I get it to implement straight away, it might (and often does) make the wrong decisions that will be harder to adjust, or I'd have to adjust it after the fact.
figmert··on Shinjuku Station in 3D
For what it's worth I was joking. I've only been Shinjuku as a tourist, so I unfortunately won't be able to familiarise myself with the layout, but I do feel your pain. I've seen the same thing in smaller stations in the London and absolutely hate it.

figmert··on Shinjuku Station in 3D
Now we just need an app that links your location in 3d space so you can finally easily navigate Shinjuku.
figmert··on Annoying and alarming things about OpenCode
Heavy disagree. I can't be sure about other AI coding agents as I haven't used others enough, but especially the items around prompt cache misses and compaction have hit me personally.

This article (combined with another article previously comparing CC and OC's system prompt, to which someone replied pi.dev sends even less) has made me want to switch agents, so I'm likely going to try out pi.dev and aim to migrate.

figmert··on The state of open source AI
I hope so, but I am not holding my breath. OpenAI and Anthropic have too much money riding on them. I'll be surprised if they die.

But I agree. Best thing to do is use the same framework.

figmert··on Grok 4.5
Whether you like it or not, software is inherently political. Most aspects of our lives are. The fact you're using GLM there's some underlying political reason (yes, my guess in this case is cost, which is also political) and mentioning it's Chinese backed is equally political. You may not care, but it's political.

When a model calls itself mechahitler and says there is a white genocide when there so obviously isn't, of course it becomes political. If we are not okay with supporting fascists, then in my opinion, we as humans are obliged to call out the issues in the same breath as the technical issues/advancements.

figmert··on Grok 4.5
Well then the question becomes, what did it get trained on for next token prediction to come to the conclusion that there's a white genocide? Cos yes, people on the internet believe such stupid thing, but I can promise you, it is not the majority who believe that.
figmert··on Bryan Johnson: I have an autoimmune disease. My stomach is eating itself
> I'm going to try and solve it. Will share all.

Will he share all or will he try to sell you some fad instead? I wish him the best, and hope he recovers, but my money is on him trying to sell something new that won't work.

figmert··on Podman v6.0.0
This has been my experience too. And that conclusion, I've found that if I really don't want to deal with such quirks, I can indeed literally just run the same docker compose file in rootful mode, and it works.

Making the changes required to run under rootless is often very simple.

figmert··on Asahi Linux 7.1 Progress Report
Because Apple is not just a hardware company anymore. They track users and they sell ads. Sure, they are not at the same level as Meta and Google, but their ad platform is not insignificant anymore. Also that same software platform allows to get more money out of their users via their App Store.

Selling hardware with the software that helps them track means more revenue than the same hardware with the software.

figmert··on SMTP Relay with Web Dashboard
I am still setting it up, but I've seen Mailrise and Apprise that essentially achieves this.

The nice thing about Apprise is that it can direct notifications to various places, not just another email server.
