fifticon··on Why have death rates from accidental falls tripled?
It is weird that the graphed increase grows steadily at presumably the same rate - there is no spike or bump or curve. I wonder if that indicates anything. Disregarding the shape of the graph, I would have guessed at a change in reporting instead. The steadily rising curve almost looks like something being gradually employed. At some point, the curve ought to change direction, if not before, then after the last person has fallen over.

And also, it reminds me of minimalist design furniture design, where e.g. handles are hidden, and you just press a secret area to toggle e.g. a cabinet door open. I wish we could take all designers and architects, and people who encourage them, who wants to do such designs, and lock them inside TESLAs which we then push from a bridge into cold water, and then watch them try to exit those same TESLAs from under the water. If it's good design, it should be be a problem. MUHAHHA.

Funnily, all this weirdness was already solved with the original titlebars, which did not try to be both a drag handle and a menu. Apparently, only peasants use windows that are not maximised. Which reminds me, it has now been 2 years or more since microsoft turned keyboard-layout-switching from a standard feature into a standard bug :-/.

Well, moving/dragging windows on windows 11 (earlier?) is no picnic either, with the scrollbar nazis having decided, that windows title bars must be the next to die. Apparently this is all intentional, and app developers are encouraged to leave tiny drag-concentration-camp areas somewhere in what used to be the titlebar, which today's presumably incredibly IT savvy users are then expected to decode with no problems whatsoever. Well paint me green and call me a dinosaur, because to me it looks like each app chooses to interpret those 'guidelines' in its own way, and often in a way I fail to decode reliably.

In my head, I can hear GPT laugh hysterically, while it explains to me that I can just continue to use alt-SPACE to bring up the MOVE system menu, if I am overwhelmed, while it gleefully assures me that MSFT has 'no current plans to get rid of that feature' (which we know is Kremlin-speak for 'the system menu is NEXT brother'.

can you clarify on what grounds it is irrelevant? As I see it, most things in the world are arranged in their current way for 'hysterical raisins', so I don't quite follow? There are approximately 200 countries that could carry continued support for greenland, but currently denmark is the one doing it, for HR. By the same logic, greenland could go to China or Russia?

That is awesome. I'm currently down a similar rabbit hole, having found Eightyone zx81 emulator, and z88dk c compiler dev kit for Z80. Trying to make interesting programs that run acceptably fast/slow on those old computers, has a nostalgic haiku feel to it, that i really miss with modern computers. Suddenly you start to care about how you loop and assign in your C program, because doing it the 'wrong' way makes the compiler emit inefficient assembly; it's 'roguelike programming', in the sense that all your choices suddenly have consequences.

fifticon··on My stages of learning to be a socially normal person
We are legion,I am sorry to say. I can recognise co-sufferers, but not necessarily help them. In older parlance, we would typically just be described as 'a bore', but there is something a lot more specific going on. I am old now, but watching my child daughter now going through the exact same motions, including doing her damndest to impress people with her many skills, and tragic-ironically driving people away from her with that exact behaviour. And I can't figure out how to help her figure it out. (past-50 insights don't resonate with 11year olds, unless you can relate them in youtuber-speak).
fifticon··on My stages of learning to be a socially normal person
For better or worse, it was probably the main driver. Since time immemorial, people have been competing for mates and resources in a social hierarchy.

To add to this fire. I recently left my 'recently bought by private equity' workplace of 8 years to work somewhere else not-yet-ruined-by-PE (yet..) A major part of my decision to quit was this communication pattern.

The whole organisation was very efficiently structured with two separate layers of managers - those who had actual decision power, and a separate layer whose task was to 'deal with us employees' but no decision power. All communication flowing one way, the same way shit drips (the only resource following 'trickle-down' mechanics). The only time I got into contact with the former level, was after I had put in my resignation; then they suddenly wanted a 1-1 to "see if there was anything they should learn from this" (presumably to sharpen/hone their skills in mistreating the employee level more efficiently in the future).

Jack Welch is very well-deservedly not receiving love. If you had to say something positive about him, it would be something like "well if he hadn't done it, someone else would have". That is not a high bar. You can give him credit for showing us that the foundations of our approach is rotten. He's a bit like Trump in that :-/

fifticon··on Denmark reportedly withdraws Chat Control proposal following controversy
There is a different problem at play behind this. There are strong lobbying efforts that want this tech/system, for their own reasons which are not being advocated to the public. At the same time, the lobbying forces behind this are pushing a random assortment of "popular" reasons to implement it - "think of the children/vegetables/climate". All this crap is not being driven by grassroots movements. To the extent those are involved, they are being manipulated and sheepherded. A lot of politics, if not all of it, are driven by real reasons separated from the methods used to push it through. See Brexit, MAGA, and a lot of other crap :-/. As happens in other countries, I see the politicians in my own country implementing a lot of random policies that have no popular support, but is quite relevant to some inner circle and network of policitians and their friends.
fifticon··on [dead]
I regularly (try to) check these kinds of news, to get a feeling for where we are at (with accountability, or whatever you might term it.)

But whenever I try to read and parse one of these 'what is the current level of popularity of what is happening?', I invariably get an article like this one. The article might be OK, and it might be my reading comprehension skills that fail me. But the gist I get from these articles, almost always sum up to two separate pieces of information I cannot reconcile or get to match/fit with each other.

(1) the copy/main text/body: "XYZ is ever even more unpopular than ever / lowest so far / new record". (2) graphs and numbers: "Disapprove 55%, Approve 45%".

then I shake my head and wonder what is going on. To restate, reiterate and clarify: - from all other signal sources; both the article itself, and my general day-to-day environment, my impression is a clear negative signal of things not going well and not being well received (*). - but whenever I look up this current-approval-rating stuff, I keep seeing numbers akin to 45-55 ???

Which is not what I would expect as the reaction and result of an incompetent führer-wannabe.

Can anyone explain to me, why grand negative headlines appear to translate into "oh no, 47% dropped to 45%".

Seriously wondering, somewhere in Europe not yet on fire.
