fifnir··on Scientists rise up against statistical significance
Yet nature forces you to provide p values and n count for everything you can in any figure as if that's enough to guarantee significance of results.

We need to start publishing with transparent and reproducible code from raw data to figure. Show me the data and let me make my own conclusions.

It's not too hard,I'm writing my phd thesis and every figure is produced from scratch and placed in the final document by a compilation script. My jupyter notebooks are then compiled in pdf and attached in the thesis document as well. Isn't this a better way of doing the "methods" section?

fifnir··on Airbnb’s ‘Guerrilla War’ Against Local Governments
But you can make more per month than renting, even if it's empty for most of the days.
fifnir··on Airbnb’s ‘Guerrilla War’ Against Local Governments
> I don't see how it drives rent up.

If entire apartments are made into AirBnbs, there's less apartments in the market which turns the prices up, what's so hard to grasp ?

fifnir··on Airbnb’s ‘Guerrilla War’ Against Local Governments
Let's allow richer-than-us foreigners to come to our city, buy all the houses, and then keep them empty to make tax-free money through air-bnb.

Fuck the locals, there's tourists that want to enjoy the sun in the summer and arabs that need to invest their petrol dollars.

fifnir··on U.S. Firms Are Helping Build China’s Orwellian State
I had a (admittedly brief look) on WL's site and couldn't find anything with regards to Russia's gov., Would you please show me what you mean ?
fifnir··on U.S. Firms Are Helping Build China’s Orwellian State
Oh yes, private police would be a terrific idea.
fifnir··on U.S. Firms Are Helping Build China’s Orwellian State
Well put, it's really shocking to read some of those wild corporation-worshiping views on HN.
fifnir··on My Salary Progression in Tech
Any good link on how NGOs work/how to start on in Europe?

Are there unified E.U. rules about it or does it change from country to country ?

fifnir··on A New Discovery Upends What We Know About Viruses
I don't see why everything published needs to be the absolute truth (which of course nothing can be).

If they had published six years ago, the whole community would have been able to validate and confirm in those six years, instead of just their own lab. Someone in a different lab might have had a better idea and the thing could be validated in two years instead of six.

As long as results are transparently and reproducibly shared, knowledge is knowledge and there's no reason to hide it.

"analitycs" ?
fifnir··on Why Drugs That Work in Mice Don't Work in Humans
Here's a nice smackdown which I don't have the time or knowledge to offer myself:

"He abandons [Dr. B.M. Hegde] all rational thinking and embraces fantastical belief systems. The sad thing is I personally know many people delaying cancer treatment being swayed by his speeches and ending up with incurable metastasis later."

fifnir··on Swansea Uni study: African wild dogs 'sneeze to vote' (2017)
With weighted votes, if the alphas sneeze it almost always leads to a hunt
fifnir··on Swansea Uni study: African wild dogs 'sneeze to vote' (2017)
I strongly suspect that the sneezing goes with a whole package of body language, you won't send the dogs hunting by hidding a recording of sneezes in the bush nearby
fifnir··on There Was a Time before Mathematica (2013)
I Mathematica heavily using in any field?
fifnir··on PyPy v7.0.0: triple release of 2.7, 3.5 and 3.6-alpha
How's pypy with numpy these days? It's been a while since I had a look and last time it was the big limiting factor for me
fifnir··on Thousands of scientists run up against Elsevier’s paywall
Unfortunately, they've started blocking it (via DNS) in some countries, and large amounts of people don't know how to access it now
fifnir··on Ketamine Could Soon Be Used to Treat Suicidal Ideation
The natural state of living organisms is to remain alive and reproduce (or help their progeny), this is such a basic concept of life that I have no idea what else I could say to support it... Life's natural state is to remain alive and make more life

I highly recommend Sam Harris's "Free Will" and "The moral landscape"
fifnir··on A new genetic technology that can quickly change entire populations gets broader
but no matter which culture gets dominant, it's the conservatives who will try and maintain it (by definition) and the progressives the ones trying to change it
fifnir··on Time to break academic publishing's stranglehold on research
Upvote/downvote lists a horrible way to publish science. Simple silly example: big group publishes, everyone gets online and upvotes the post in the early stages so it floats to the top.
fifnir··on $200 retail whole genome sequencing now available
It's their job to do these things
fifnir··on Ask HN: Have you ever regretted working on a product?
Wasn't the risk shared between those who got to live in mcmansions and those who gave them the money for that? Why does one party get to reap all the benefits but pay none of the consequences?
fifnir··on Wooden bikes
It's also safe to point out that the vast majority of people for the vast majority of topics don't know and don't care. Don't tell me the people who go around cycling on tiny bikes with their heels on the pedal and their knees reaching their throat have found some kind of alternative definition of practicality...
fifnir··on Wooden bikes
Keep in mind that this will change the feeling of the bike quite drastically. When you hit a bump with an airtyre, the entire wheel responds to absorb the shock, but with foam tyres that doesn't happen (only the part of the tyre right above where you hit will contract)

fifnir··on Companies struggling to fill jobs 'should try paying more,' Fed's Kashkari says
> They want to do some job for money and you're telling them "no, it pays too little, you're not allowed to do that job, you should be on welfare or find another job instead!".

The idea that they need to be on some form of welfare ANYWAY doesn't bother you ?

> If the law forced restaurant owners to pay their workers as much as a law firm has to pay its workers, most restaurants would go out of business because people simply aren't willing to pay as much for restaurant service as they are for lawyers.

And if the southern states couldn't have slaves the economy would collapse and if people could strike, no business can survive and if you have to pay immigrants the same salary as locals, no business can survive and if they pass anti-sweatshop laws , no business can survive and if you can't fire them for unionizing , no business can survive and if you can't hire children , no business can survive and if you pay them for ONLY 40h per week , no business can survive and if you pay women equally , no business can survive

it has been the same excuse forever, if we give rights the market will crash, and yet every time instead of crushing it just keeps blooming... weird.

fifnir··on Companies struggling to fill jobs 'should try paying more,' Fed's Kashkari says
> What gives you the right to "design" how these workers spend their time; maybe they'd prefer to be exploited than jobless?

Jeeeeeesus christ, how am I designing how they spend their time?

How can you detect lack of freedom in saying "you can't work for unlivable salaries" but not in "I only pay unlivable salaries because if you dont want these crubs there's other more desperate people".

> Ultimately the worker is payed by the company's customers,

No, no, they are paid by the owners who decide what slice of the income to allocate to salaries. The customers pay the product and walk away, they don't know anything about the internal workings of a company

>and if the law asks consumers to pay more than they're willing to pay for the workers' service,

The law asks the boss to pay livable salary, the end price has nothing to do with the law. If the service cannot be offered at competitive prices while offering livable wages, it's not a sustainable business

fifnir··on Companies struggling to fill jobs 'should try paying more,' Fed's Kashkari says
If I put sawdust in the bread i make to "make my business sustainable" I'll end up in jail, why is exploiting my workers more acceptable than that?

"well yeah but the workers consented "

People do a lot of things when desperate, that shouldn't inform how we design our society
